12Z GFS still going for a rain/snow/rain "event" next weekend, for high ground at least, with low pressure dragging down a shot of polar maritime air.

As interesting as that low is, my eyes are still more drawn to that hugely bloated high building to our south. Why is it that anytime decent Atlantic storms developed, we nine times out of ten have blocking highs building up over us?

Eh? Storm Barney packed a serious punch around the middle of the country, with gusts of 126Km/h recorded in Oak Park Carlow. I don't understand why anyone would wish for windstorms...Iceland is welcome to the beast of a low if it transpires that way.

Scandinavian High in deep FI on the 18Z GFS with a nice cold pool over Europe rumbling westward.

Pure La La Land stuff of course.

Long way off so chances are slim to none but the ECM has been progging the potential for some prolonged periods of heavy rain to develop from waving frontal zones in a long fetch SW'ly over the course of next weekend for a couple of runs now. The charts currently are beginning to look worryingly like they did back in November 2009, not that there is any need for us to worry at this stage.

The ECM Ensembles out to 15 days are also showing a continuation of this theme of a +NAO. No hint of cold going by this anyway.

500-1000 hPa thickness, 500 hPa height average and standard deviation.

ECM with a big north atlantic low at 168 hours. A bit further south and this would be interesting here.
