So, after it was patched, Doom seemed to work fine and... I actually didn't like it very much. I don't know why, I just didn't like the way it felt. Uninstalled the demo as soon as I finished it, don't think I'll get it now.

What is involved in the demo? A small part of the single player? Interesting move on their part to release a demo. They got such a bad press from the multiplayer open beta. I wonder if this is a way to get some sales from its decent single player.

The first level of the singleplayer campaign. Honestly, I don't think they needed a demo to get sales considering just how well-recieved it was on release.

I also played the demo twice today. Game doesn't perform as well as I'd hoped. Had to have everything to minumum and render scaling to 75% to keep it reliably above 60. Looks sleek at least. All the mechanics seem solid. Sound design is superb.

But... it's just not really as good or any better than the original DOOM. It was fun but it not €59.99 fun. I mean I got my very own Ultimate DOOM WAD for €2.69 on sale on GOG and it's just a better experience with more maps and mods than I've had hot dinners and with enough replayability to last me till I'm dead.

It's really just a simple question that keeps me from being in any way interested in nuDoom. Is there any real reason to be playing nuDoom over the originals? It's the answer to that (as well as the windows-only aspect) that keep me from far from ever clicking that purchase button.

Also I have to say... it's kind of weak that they had such a huge announcement for a demo and be so proud about it like it was a service to the world. A timed demo no less. They're aware the original DOOM was shareware, right? The way they talk about the originals in all their press releases make it sound like they had anything to do with it despite ID being completely gutted of any of the actual developers of that game. Meh. Moving on.

I am just playing the hell out of Steamworld Heist.

I'm liking it even more than Hard West, and that's saying something. :D

Been playing Vermintide today with a friend and had an absolute blast, went through all the new DLC maps and then some others, and I was extremely lucky to get the Twilight Glaive for Kerillian. One of the most frustrating things about the game is the loot system, I just keep on getting trash, so it's awesome to finally get something that's really good.

    I'm all like

Im so, so, so bad at Crypt of the Necrodancer

The soundtrack is fabulous, Hotline Miami standard being always stuck in my head, but Janey am I crap at it.

I have to play as the Bard so I can set my own rhythm and just play strategy style.

Warhammer 40k is also really good, just gave it a whirl yesterday as it was in the backlog and it's pretty fun to play, the story is such crap it's hilarious.

Want to get stuck into Victor Vran tomorrow and see what I think of it.

I've got decent internet now so my backlog of installed games is up on like 50 so I'm giving each a few minutes to try to impress me in the coming weeks, I've gotten fairly high standards for my games in the last year or so. That being said I'm sure a lot of people will think my interests are ****e too.

What's the general view on Dust An Elysian Tale here? It's a nice looking game but doesn't seem that great overall from what I've played, and Figit is such a dose. Just reached the first town so I'll give it a shot to pick up before kicking it from my hard drive anyways.

That being said I'm sure a lot of people will think my interests are ****e too.

Each to their own, a lot of my favourite games in recent years are indie titles, and there's plenty of people who'd go "ugh, indie games" and scoff. So enjoy what you enjoy, and don't worry what other people might think. Out of curiosity, what is it you think people might think is ****e?

Terrific game, which I never got around to finishing, but one of the best examples of a modern Metroidvania going. Stick with it a little, I remember it getting a bit more challenging after the first part and more fun, which is a bit of a bog standard tutorial section.

Seriously gorgeous artstyle as well, it's up there with Bastion for me.

I finished off The Witcher 3 and its DLC over the weekend. Fantastic game, but I'd gotten a bit tired of it towards the end. Definitely not something I'll want to replay for a number of years. Well worth the time though. The DLC was fantastic and very entertaining throughout.

I'm going to focus on Ryse: Son of Rome and Alien:Isolation now. I've had the two of them on my backlog for a good while, and Ryse is fairly short.

I've been fist-deep in my Leaving Cert for the past few weeks, so I haven't had much of a chance to play anything. Last exam I'll actually have to put effort into is tomorrow, so after that and the obligatory LC holiday I'm going to get stuck into the Witcher 3 - played all the way through the first two games and by the time I reached number 3 I was just too busy. I might also reinstall Fallout 4 and give it a second chance, see if I just gave it a bad rap first time around.

Mostly playing Overwatch with occasional breaks into Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

Well Victor Vran is savage imo, played about an hour and loving it so far

I've ground the absolute ****e out of FFX at this stage and I'm nearly at the murder anything I want stage, but not quite.

I'll probably eventually get bored and finish off the story. Not sure will I bother with FFX-2.

    It sounds a bit... emm...

Lots of Hearthstone as well. Shaman Evolution decks are huge craic, and the Tavern Brawls are always a good bit of fun.

Started into GTA5. It's a bit meh. I feel like the story has gone too far away from it's roots. I don't think they have the chops to really deliver on it.
I just don't find myself caring about the missions.
It was quite neat and tidy in 3, Vice City and San Andreas. It's gone a bit vague or something. I just don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing.
And it's not actually challenging at all on PC because shooting mechancis that are balanced around gamepads become trivially easy with a mouse and keyboard.

Driving is a piece of piss as well, especially with super-slomo Franklin mode.

The radio isn't as fun as I remember in previous games either.

Franklin and Michael have been forgettable and their stories garbage thus far. Trevor is actually quite good though.
I've just gotten onto his part and the barely contained crazy is quite charming.

All in all it feels a bit soulless so far. They've delved further and further into this fantasy world with each game and I don't think anything has been gained.
I feel like Rockstar have disappeared up their arses a bit. To be fair it is early days yet so it might get better.

Not sure I'm arsed about the upcoming Sales. They're not much good anymore anyway, and the only games I really want are either not out yet or just out so they won't be discounted.

I got Assassin's Creed Syndicate yesterday and I'm loving it. I haven't played anything else since, which is a rarity for me, as I'm always changing games multiple times (although I do keep inadvertently taking 20 minute breaks every hour or so (but hey, that's a good thing isn't it? It's recommended))

I'm hoping to keep this consistent as I haven't had this much fun in an AC game since AC3

    Mostly Mount & Blade.

Its OK I wont bother you again.

Still playing Siege alot. Patch 3.3 dropped yesterday so might give it a go later.

Been playing Dead by Daylight a little bit since its release. Decent enough monster vs survivors asymmetrical game. I still prefer Damned though.

Also got some keys for the Gang Beasts multiplayer and been playing with a mate. Honestly some of the most laugh inducing fun I've had in a long time!

I am obsessed with Vermintide lately, managing to get a few hard missions under my belt now too. I've gone back to it after getting fed up of Overwatch, and enjoying it more than on release.

Did they patch the shield characters much?? :P

    Seen they made kapkan useful!

    :P

I "think" they might have nerfed Shields a little, I.E they fixed something to do with shields still killing/DBNO opponents in melee when the opponent melees at the same time. I thought this was referring to the shield parry or if it might be something different.

But need to check ingame first to see it that was the case, when I tried T-Hunt last night the shield parry was still there so this must have been something else like a bug that even I didn't notice. I hope shield parry isn't gone from PvP because I got alot of kills in melee by baiting people to attack me as Montagne :P

Yep Kapkan is OP as fook now!

I think the shield thing is if you both hit at the same time instead of the shield parry you get the kill as the shield??

Syndiate is a lot of fun, which reminds me, I must really get the DLC complete. I got the Season Pass a few weeks ago, but when I relaunched to play it, I started doing side missions again, rather than the DLC!

So, after being completely absorbed in Vermintide, I've been giving a few of the games I got in the Steam sale a quick lash.

    Party Hard
Only played for about an hour, but having a good laugh with this so far. It's a kinda stealthy murder simulator where you have to kill everyone at a party, very tongue in cheek, I killed Darth Vader with an oven, and then got beaten up by Super Mario. Killed a whole nightclub queue by starting a car and watching it plow into everyone. I haven't got past the 3rd level yet because I do stupid things and get caught.

    Papers, Please
Started it intending to give it a quick 20 minutes the other night, ended up being 45 minutes without me even noticing. My whole family died and I lost my job, 10/10!

    The Swindle
It's kinda more than a bit Mark of the Ninja, except with randomly generated levels, and the goal is to break in and steal all the moneys. Only gave it about half an hour so far, but absolutely loving it so far, terrific art style, love the steampunk setting, and the music is phenomenal! Seriously, check out just how good this is:

    Whispering Willows
Only gave this a quick 20 minutes, but it's spookier than I expected! I liked the whole 'spirit leaving your body' mechanic, so it's good so far.

Fired up Papers, Please again and before I knew it I had been playing for 2 hours. :o

It really is a fantastic little game.

Probably my most memorable game in recent years.

Keep an eye on Need to Know. It's a steam greenlight game in a similar vein to Papers, Please. Looks promising.

I could never see past the fact that I'm literally stamping passports. I didn't give it enough time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

I'm amazed at just how engrossing stamping passports can actually be, like I got really caught up in it.

Playing more of The Swindle this evening, very different game entirely, but I'm loving it as much. Oddly enough, I felt I had been playing it a lot longer, but it turns out I wasn't and it's just that the pace is so utterly frantic. It's somewhat similar to Invisible Inc. in the way that you have X amount of time before something game-ending happens, and you have to gear up/get resources to do the final mission. I've probably completely bungled this playthrough I died so much in the beginning, but it is seriously fun, I'm really liking the way when you get spotted, you can still make a mad dash to grab what you can and get out before the police show up. Oh, and did I mention the soundtrack? Because it really is terrific, you gotta give it a listen. ;)

Lots more Vermintide, more Swindle, and gave a quick go to a couple of things I got yesterday. Momodora: Reverie Under Moonlight I just popped on for a quick 10 mins before bed last night, great first impression, and definitely pretty challenging.

Convoy I had a quick bash at this afternoon, and it pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin; it's FTL with a Mad Max vibe. You've got your main truck, and then you've got support vehicles that have to protect it, move them around and defend your truck against enemy raiders attacking. Really enjoying it so far, managed to ram an enemy into an oncoming obsticle, that was sweet. But yeah, Convoy is basically Faster Than Light mashed together with Mad Max... Faster Than Max? Yeah, it's good. ;)

Just finished Dreamfall Chapters. Midway through a replay of Baldur's Gate and just picked up 80 Days and Year Walk.

I love some of the references in Convoy! :D

One mission is to precure some self-sealing stem bolts, another has a character requiring 'Rintaro's microwave', I'm dead :D
