So I've managed to find four gigabit boxes namely:

    Q-Box at $60 - http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Q-BOX-Amlogic-S905-4K-KODI-TV-Box-2G-16G-2-4G-5G-WIFI-1000M-LAN-Bluetooth4-0-KODI-Dolby-364735.html

    MXQ Pro Quickplay at $40 - http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MXQ-Pro-Quick-Play-Amlogic-S905-2K-4K-TV-BOX-1G-8G-WIFI-Gigabit-LAN-Bluetooth-4-0-KODI-HDMI-H-265-361598.html

    MXIII Pro at $53 - http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MXIII-PRO-Android-TV-BOX-Amlogic-S812-Quad-Core-2G-8G-5G-WIFI-LAN-Bluetooth4-0-KODI-DLNA-354930.html

    MXV+ at $44 - http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MXV--Amlogic-S905-TV-BOX-1G-8G-802-11b-g-n-Gigabit-LAN-Bluetooth4-0-KODI-LED-HDMI-2060P-DLNA-3D-361331.html

The MXQ Pro Quickplay, the Q-Box and the MXV+ all use S905 chip and the MXIII Pro uses S812.

The MXQ Pro Quickplay, the Q-Box and the MXV+ run Android 5.1 and the MXII Pro runs Android 4.4.

The MXQ Pro Quickplay and the MXV Plus have RAM/ROM of 1/8. The MXIII Pro has 2/8 and the Q-Box has 2/16.

The Q-Box, MXIII Pro are dualband, 2.4ghz and 5ghz, the MXV Plus is single band 2.4ghz and I'm little unsure of the MXQ Pro Quickplay, some info. I read says its dual band some say its just 2.4ghz.

Of course I'm worried about the S905 chip after Allyall's advice but then when I look at the specs. of the S812 box it is only running Android 4.4.

So I'm leaning towards the Q-Box with its 5ghz and its 2/16 of Ram/Rom. What do you think, is that the right choice bearing in mind I'll be using it a lot for IPTV?

And if anyone has any Geekbuying discount codes that would be appreciated too.

    Regards

Good post, I noticed that q-box a while back and thought it looked like good value for money, I wonder what the wireless is like on it? in my setup, I like to use it wireless as opposed to wired, as using it wired requires running a cable around a fireplace and looks untidy. With this in mind i bought the minix x8h+ and thats worked fine so far.I'll be using this box in a different room but same conditions apply. Are the S905 chips really buggy?

Well this is what Allyall said and he is an expert IMO:

    Just a heads up.
As mentioned before, the S905 aren't very stable, and are prone to overheating. The S905 was touted as something that wouldn't need a heatsink, but is now becoming apparent that it does. Many are adding loads of vents on the underside, you may add your own if you want.
Also S905 Roms are buggy. And as you will almost definitely require a custom Rom if ordered at the moment, be careful with names and motherboards. For example, there already is an S805 box named MXV
There are many MXQ All black motherboards - v3_1 is being worked on, but is still annoying enough that is best avoided (tell-tale sign is usually cheaper version of MXQ).

As for your fireplace problem -maybe you could use Homeplugs - I find them great.

Fire TV is good but I find mine fills the available memory on the box itself rather quickly when in use, where you get the notification to remove apps.

Yeah, the Amlogic 800 series can only run Android 4.4, there are no SDKs released by Amlogic to run anything higher.

As for the Amlogic 900 series, only some of them support VP9 - which is what high definition youtube broadcasts in. For that reason, the s905 is out for me, I'm going to wait for Amlogic S908 / S905M / S905X or preferably the Amlogic S912 with the h265 encoding.

Thank you so much for your post.

You really helped me make up my mind - I'm going to copy you and wait.

I had seen this post on the Amolgic chips: http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/03/10/amlogic-2016-roadmap-reveals-upcoming-s905d-processor-android-6-0-for-amlogic-s905-and-s912-socs/

but not the one that you have posted.

So any idea when the S912 will be out - I know the link I posted says Q2 but have you got any knowledge on a more precise date.

Although I guess it won't be common in boxes until at least Q4.

    Regards

None whatsoever, very difficult to trust a lot of what is advertised on Alibaba etc, some of them have ridiculous specs, like this one with a s912 AND S905 chip , then when you scroll down to the main details it has a Rockchip RK3368 chip ,

The S805 was announced by Amlogic in October or so and as far as i can see only hit Android boxes in January. So, as the S912 is only being released, it's still not listed on Amlogic's own site, i would see it hitting Android boxes by late Quarter 3 - in times for Chrstmas anyway:P.

I think the problem with alibaba and aliexpress or rather the sellers is their lack of attention to detail. I don't think they deliberately try to mislead. And also English is not their first language. I've been using Aliexpress for years and basically I have been a satisfied customer 99% of the time.

    Hi Blade,

Has your Pro come yet and if so what opinion do you have of it please?

    Thanks

I received a few of the new MK808b pro's S905. I'm still really testing it for overheating problems that have been mentioned. I read one guy saying that his one locked up every 30 mins in Kodi. However I used it constantly last night for 2 hours and didn't have a problem, maybe there was something wrong with his Kodi setup! It's warmer to the touch than the earlier model 'Plus', but that didn't get any warmer at the end of the 2 hour session. I will of course let it run for 3 or 4 hours when I get a chance.

But at first glance, it's not bad. It is faster than the Plus as expected, loads up much quicker etc. I haven't found any major bugs yet except there's no setting for Ethernet, but I'm pretty sure that could be added by a future ROM from Geekbuying or if someone makes a custom ROM for it. While of course there's no actual Ethernet connection on the device itself, I was using an adapter on the earlier model and there's no reason why it couldn't be physically possible on this too via USB.

But TBH if you're just buying one device for yourself, you may as well go for something more expensive with 2GB RAM, Ethernet etc.

BTW has anyone else noticed that people on Vodafone are having problems with their clock settings? As the devices don't have a battery to keep the time, setting them on auto normally the device gets the time from the ISP (NITZ) on each boot up. Works fine with most ISP's but it doesn't appear to work for people with Vodafone home broadband as it's not sending the time. There might be another way to fix that properly but for now I've just used a clocksync app. The only problem with that though is that the app doesn't sync the time quick enough before all the Google stuff has loaded up and got it's knickers in a twist when a device is set to 1970. That means the playstore won't work. However the new devices like the MK808b pro thankfully don't reset the clock that far back, so everything still works.

That's happening on quite a few devices, not just the S905, and has been giving me a headache for a while now.
Changing the clock to manual and depending on the device turning of location can help (as a temporary fix).

Thanks for your very detailed reply.

Yesterday I was going to buy the Q-Box but I've decided now to wait till the S912 comes out - which I'm guessing will be in another six months (by the time the boxes hit the shops)

The above ones have been down at that price quite a few times.
I checked camelcamelcamel, but not showing, so I assume different sellers.
I think - like the Nvidia Shield, that the lower price seems to be becoming the retail price.

(Still a very good price) :)

Just be aware, if you buy the Win8 version, you may have to jump through a few hoops before you get it working as you would like.

$129 CA (plus Duty & handling fee) for 1GB Ram & 4GB Storage is a bit crazy.

Geekbuying have a low end S905 competitor in the MXQ 4K Rockchip (RK3329) version with 10-bit H.264 support that's currently just a measily 50 cent over the duty exemption limit.

Two new boxes due shortly, Play 2s and the Hub

    Link to specs

Have been thinking of buying the Core but might wait for both of these to be launched

Great to see a box with a Mali 800 series, the Mali 400 series was muck, VP9 decoder for youtube, H.264 encoding is decent for recording, grant it, it's not H.265 encoding but can't have everything!
