From the rumours, it seems there will be a lot a launch and if they sell out, it'll only be a good sign for Nintendo.
Since they're trying to do a lot right this time, I can't see them giving people an excuse not to buy one.

At least we're really locked into the March date at this point. Another delay would be crushing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,194 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

The January date(s) is the next milestone.

What new Wii U Pokemon game? Pokken? Sun and Moon are 3DS only.

It's all but confirmed an upgraded version of Sun & Moon called Stars is coming to the switch by the end of 2017.

Not Wii U though which is what he mentioned buying.

Oh I didn't read his answer properly. I have no idea what he's talking about then.

A Director at THQ Nordic has says they have two games in development for the Switch. They were behind Darksiders, which besides it's flaws, was a pretty decent game. That'd be a good addition if a third one was one of them.

THQ Nordic are publishing a ton of smaller indie style games. I think they published Vermintide on consoles recently, alongside the Darksiders remasters. Battle Chasers is a good bet for Switch, art style isnt too taxing so easy enough to get running on Switch and not sure but there might have been a WiiU version mentioned in the kickstarter.

Some accessories have popped up on EB Games Australia's website.

They also point to USB-C for charging.

Cool. I need a backup charger for my One Plus 3. :)

At least the USB-C will mean less busted ports for parents to have repaired, my wife's Nexus 5x has such a port, very handy indeed.
Could have been worse, could have been a lightning port instead, bad enough they're getting Mario Run first!

THQ Nordic acquires more franchises to prepare for the Nintendo Switch

Thanks to a small publisher in Europe, we’re learning a little bit more about who’s making games for the Nintendo Switch

The Vienna-based developer and publisher today announced that it has purchased franchises from Mobile Gaming Studios Ltd. and Enigma Software Productions. Specifically, THQ Nordic now owns Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, a third-person action game that originally came out in 2003 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox, and GameCube, from Mobile Gaming Studios. It acquired the strategy series War Leaders: Clash of Nations and Legends of War from Enigma. THQ Nordic noted that it thinks the Sphinx series will be a good fit for Nintendo’s upcoming system, the Switch.

THQ Nordic was formerly Nordic Games GmbH. It acquired the THQ name in 2014, after that publisher went bankrupt. The company often purchases franchises, including the Darksiders and Red Faction series from THQ. These new purchases add to the company’s stable, even if none of them are particularly well-known.

“These are not financially material acquisitions, but due to our love for these types of games they were natural acquisition targets that add up to our portfolio,” said Lars Wingefors, founder and group chief executive officer or THQ Nordic, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “Moreover, we also got a lot of messages from fans that encouraged us to add them. Among these titles, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is very well suited for the Nintendo audience — which we love to support. We are excited for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s new platform, and already have two other projects in development for it.”

THQ Nordic also noted in the press release that it will reveal more info about its Switch projects in the future.

It's very good news, Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy was a terrific and underrated game.

Edit: Reading the text I see they made a mistake and called it "Sphinx and The Cursed Mommy". :pac: I've corrected it.

I can't wait for the Switch, which will be the first Nintendo console I will have bought since the one I bought earlier this year.

When the system is connected to the dock by USB-C, the system’s components will run at a higher clock speed to facilitate 1080p resolutions on the TV. Both video and power will be transfered over USB-C when docked. Plugging the system into the dock will also activate a small additional fan to help with cooling when run at that higher clock speed. This fan is in the rear of the dock, and there is a gap in the back of the dock to allow the system’s inbuilt fans to vent when docked.
Nintendo’s January 13th 2017 reveal events will feature near retail level hardware. Each title will be locked to playing one game demo, but press will be free to take the systems to a separate area of the event to play on sofas rather than the TV. When returning to TVs, they will not be required to return the system to the same dock it started at.

I'm gonna try and get more than one dock then!

    So, this is a thing
Dark Souls running on Nintendo Switch

It's good news, though it will launch, if it i released, as part of a Trilogy for the current gen consoles, including the PS4 and XB1.
From the article it seems they will see how the Switch sells before spending the money on releasing it, along with DS and DS2.
I have to say, the idea of a remastered Dark Souls is pretty amazing, but the idea that all three of them will be playable on the go with the Switch is just ridiculously awesome.
Let's just hope there's no compromises to make it a lesser port, aside from the 4k support the Pro/Scorpio versions will undoubtedly ship with.

Jaysus, I'm nearly afraid to buy games for the PS4 now in case these big games like Fallout, FF15, Tomb Raider etc get a Swith release. Clearly I'd love to play these big games on a Nintendo system first.

Surely Dark Souls is a terrible fit for such a throwable console?

What are you on about? It's a great fit. Think how many consoles they'll sell if you're smacking the thing off a wall every 5 seconds playing Dark Souls. It's a license to print money.

REPORT: NINTENDO SWITCH WILL HAVE GAMECUBE VIRTUAL CONSOLE SUPPORT

Nintendo’s next console may come with support for GameCube virtual console titles if tweet by a well known industry insider is to correct. The deputy news editor for outlet EuroGamer, which originally broke the news of the detachable Nintendo Switch “Joy-Cons”, has posted on twitter that the upcoming Nintendo Switch will have GameCube emulation support for the third iteration of the Virtual Console.

Here is the original tweet by Tom Phillips that has set a wave of speculation across the internet:

No details about what GameCube titles that may be currently in testing at Nintendo or which games the console manufacturer may be considering for the Switch’s launch next March. Tom Phillips is promising that an upcoming report on EuroGamer will outline what may be the 1st games to hit the 3rd generation of the Virtual Console service.

That's great and all but not so great if they only release 1 GC game every few months. If they can even keep to such a hectic schedule

Sources: Nintendo Switch will have GameCube Virtual Console support

    Sunshine! Luigi! Smash Bros. Melee!

Nintendo Switch will be able to play GameCube games via its Virtual Console service, three separate sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

GameCube support is already tested and working, we understand, and three Nintendo games have already been prepped for Switch.

Those games are Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Wii, Wii U and 3DS have all offered a Virtual Console service for downloading games released on earlier Nintendo hardware. Switch will be no different.

And while the number of platforms to be offered on Switch's Virtual Console has yet to be nailed down, we've heard that there should be an upgrade programme similar to that available on Wii U, where earlier purchases of Virtual Console NES games can be 'upgraded' for a small fee rather than being bought again at full price.

We've also heard that Nintendo Switch's Virtual Console is being engineered by (Nintendo European Research and Development) NERD, the studio behind the recent NES Mini micro-console which sold out in many stores ahead of Christmas.

Up next on its slate? A version of the GameCube Animal Crossing is currently being tested for potential release.

Animal Crossing is a particularly interesting title as it included more than a dozen NES classics - such as Donkey Kong, Mario and Zelda - to obtain and play within the game.

Impressively, we've heard that support for these games is currently in Animal Crossing's Virtual Console build and working. So, if all goes to plan, you would be able to be play an emulated NES game within an emulated GameCube game on your Switch on the bus.

Nintendo is also looking at Switch support for the Wii U's GameCube controller adaptor peripheral, although we understand that a final decision has not yet been made.

Fans have been asking for GameCube titles to be made available on Virtual Console for years - so, why now?

Switch's increased power from Wii U is certainly a factor. Digital Foundry actually ran tests to see how the GameCube's Dolphin emulator runs on Nvidia Tegra X1 mobile technology - the chipset which powers Switch.

The results were promising and suggested Switch should be able to run each game at least as well as its original state. How much better, of course, will depend on Switch's final hardware.

Another big push behind GameCube Virtual Console, we hear, is the desire within Nintendo to continue making Super Smash Bros. Melee easily playable. 15 years on from its initial release, Melee is still a hugely popular game in the esports scene, and a regular major draw at huge competitions such as Evo.

Melee's easy availability via Switch Virtual Console will help matters, rather than relying on aging hardware or third-party emulation.

Nintendo declined to comment when contacted for this article.

Switch is set to launch in March 2017, and be revealed in further detail at an event in early January.

Eurogamer recently reported that the Switch would have a 6.2" 720p multi-touch screen and next year host its own version of Pokémon Sun and Moon, code-named Pokémon Stars.

The Nvidia Shield, which runs an older Nvidia chipset that the Switch, can emulate Gamecube games in a playable state so Switch should have no problems doing the same.

Reggie on Jimmy Fallon, Miyamoto in the audience promoting Mario Run. Jimmy played through a level before Reggie said he had another surprise, lifting up a question mark box to unveil.......the Switch!

Reggie surprises Jimmy by letting him play Breath of the Wild on Switch for the first time ever shown. Reggie and Jimmy played the game on the Pro controller. Reggie then demoed the 'switch', and handed Jimmy the screen to play Breath of the Wild on the tablet. Fantastic promotion for the Switch and then to finish......

......Miyamoto performed the Mario theme on guitar with The Roots. This happened.

Wow that was all types of fantastic....
There we were thinking we have to wait til Jan 12th for more info and they only pull a non Nintendo thing and show off the Switch for 1st time without any marketing video a month early.

Hopefully folks pick fallon video apart with what ports were on it etc. looks like USBC is a thing. Lets hope so.

Machine looked very slick. and glad they used the pro controller.
    Well played Nintendo. Well played...
