Interestingly on UTV.ie they mention a HD studio for the first time - here's hoping they launch on all platforms in HD.

Any new studio built today would have to be HD really. TV3 always bang on about their HD studio in their press releases - but have never output HD at all! However, I'm optimistic that UTV will be HD from the start. They seem to be putting in the effort.

They could start with some HD output from their Belfast studios - looks horrible during local programming

Or copy TV3 and use the RDS.
TV3 have used The Helix too, didn't Eamon Dunphy's shortlived show air from The Helix?

Their studio in Belfast is not equipped for HD. The ironic thing is the one in Dublin will be.

Just checked and there is some difference in picture quality between the HD and SD test screens. Fantastic that they are launching in HD as well as SD on satellite. The big question is though, will they launch in HD on Saorview ?

Will it be on EPG in the coming days or it be 'Other Channels' until January?

It will most likely be addedt to the Sky EPG before Sky EPG freeze. So it could be added with in the next two weeks.

    What freeze??
Over tne Christmas period Sky don't add or rmove channels to or from the EPG as the techy guys are on holidays durning this period. This is called an EPG freeze. As for Saorview god only knows when UTVI will be added.

The 19th - 5th or before will probably be around the freeze dates... I assume we will se UTVI launch with a looping promo before the 1st.

Let's speculate on the epg numbers - I'll go with:
    Saorview: 9
    Sky: 119
    UPC: 110

I doubt it will be 106 on UPC as it would mean evicting 3e. My guess is that it will be 108 or 109 depending on what happens with the not-yet-materialised TV3+1.

The Minister for Communications, Alex White, T.D., today signed the order designating the new UTV Ireland television service for carriage on SAORVIEW. The decision means that Irish television viewers who rely on the SAORVIEW platform will be able to view the new service when it launches on New Year’s Day 2015.

The designation was made following a determination that UTV Ireland “is a television service having the character of a public service.” The designation was made under section 130(1)(a)(iv) of the Broadcasting Act 2009.
What the hell is "a television service having the character of a public service"?

Ah OK - this must ensure they by-pass any TV3 action against them...

I assume it will be soon that they will be going on the EPG's - promo's already playing out over the test service.

Agreements have been reached with leading platform providers Saorview, Sky, UPC and eVision for carriage of UTV Ireland. Ireland’s newest television channel will be available on Sky channel 116, UPC channel 110 and eVision channel 108. The Saorview channel number for UTV Ireland will be allocated shortly.

116 on sky it is :)

I'm interested to see if UPC feel (or are!) required to force it on to analogue and what'll be the lost channel if so. Still a vast number of secondary and further TVs on analogue cable about as well as the tiny number of direct customers - mostly elderly I'd guess.
