    Possibly not a popular opinion...

Not so much an unpopular opinion as a truly thick stupid one.

16% of irish people earn more than 60k pa. These people pay 73% of the tax.

Income tax I presume? That's a propagandised 'letterbox view' of who pays what relative to their means and who gets what in return.

So you have no actual suggestion then.

Ireland still gives more in International aid/charity than the US or the UK.
But lets not bring sense into the debate.
While these two other nations cut back on this in times of domestic fiscal difficulty Ireland has let its own people struggle and crawl and beg for scraps.
Like the likear5e schoolboy who brings the teacher the apple and CRAVES the golden star on his copybook, our leaders have allowed this to continue.

you are aware of what happened the end of last housing boom in Ireland like???
HINT:the main reason Irelands economy is in the mess its in now!!!

to suggest it is healthy industry is far from the truth...it is backed up people borrowing unsuistainably which will have to be paid back with yours and mine saving in the event of a collapse (see Cyprus)

to actively go out and seek to repeat mistakes of the past...if this is the best proposal politians can come up with...we will be facing into worse ruin again in a few years

why do you want to repeat this mess again????

You truly are a buffoon who has completely missed the point.

Grand, we'll go with your idea. We don't need a healthy property market anymore. Let's stop building houses, hospitals, business premises etc. All those unemployed construction industry types can stay unemployed and the people who need these new buildings can just go ****e.

We don't need a thriving property market though. Property should, in most cases, be seen as a basic social requirement. It should be done efficiently, and not be an integral part of an economy.

    Healthy for who???
    For the developers?
Or healthy for the landlords and speculators?
Or for the people who can AFFORD 500k mortgages?
Or for the people who will be forced to take Jobsbridge roles in the construction of these new homes(I heard a very good story from someone who is currently unemployed and was approached by the SW to take on a Jobsbridge internship the other day as a carpenter with a local builder. He was a printer in his previous job. The SW officer looked genuinely confused when this was pointed out :D)
Will it solve the housing problem?
    No.
Bit rich to be throwing around claims of buffoonery

The problem at the moment is banks are not lending to large developers who had trouble paying the banks after they over extended themselves before the crash.

Ireland needs about 30,000 houses a year, not the 90,000 a year which we had before the crash.
Ireland needs large office spaces to attract large multinationals.

Banks are currently being tight with lending as they shore up their balance sheets ahead of the Eurozone bank stress tests. It is hard to see them lending a lot to developers, given the past and given the stress tests that all banks face in the Eurozone.

    Well done Sinn Fein,
Great to see the masses waking up to the fact that the goverments are all about themselves and the rich.
I never voted Sinn Fein in the past , but bygods they they will get my votes now till i die.
Absolutely sick of past and presents governments.
Cuts, cuts and more cuts for the working class people of this country.

And before folks jump on me saying they are only 4th and all that,
So what? They are making ground and i know lots of family members who feel the same.

Wait till Sinn Fein get in and like in Animal farm you will find the pigs will be looking like humans/all the rest as reality hits.
Easy to oppose when one hasn't to make the decisions, just look at Labour before the last election.
Sinn Fein are doing exactly the same and like with Labour, the same people will fall for it again.

Problem for who? Developers? Local councillors not getting their backhanders for rezoning?
Doesn't look like a "problem" that's any business of the state in any case.

Has sinn feins policies up north been discussed yet? How they've increased the property and water charges 4 years in a row? Closed schools and a and e departments? The most hypocritical party to ever disgrace Irish politics.

The state owns nearly all of AIB and they still have a stake in Bank of Ireland. As shareholders the state has a role particularly with AIB.
It is not good for an economy if banks are not lending in a sensible manner - lending too little affects economic growth and too much well we know where that leads too.
Banks are not lending to the people who can build lots of houses, which is what is needed in some areas of the country like Dublin.
The lack of lending to builders and the lack of building enough houses will just lead to house prices rising faster.

Oh sure that is the fault of others don't you know.

The north is a different political jurisdiction and British dependency.

    Do you understand that?

    Okay, I'll bite.
Because no party here would ever increase charges or close schools and a&e depts?

Sorry to go all commie on you, but if building houses is of such fundamental importance to Ireland's economy then the government should be doing it all. Why let the private sector control it?

Some people want something a little nicer than a "basic social requirement."

I didn't read their NI election manifesto. Did they say they wouldn't do this? It's a different country with a different budget you know?

Then they can haddaway and build with their own money instead of begging from the now state owned banks to fuel the next boom bust cycle.

That is true, they get large transfers of money from the UK, since their economy is far too heavily based on public workers.

In the case of this country, they want people who make something for themselves to pay those who couldn't be bothered.

Or and here's a nicer alternative, the state could carry on running the banks as normal then sell the shares when they can get a decent price and hopefully not **** up the economy in the meantime by not lending out money.
