Watching it now. Christ it's bleak. Some seriously visceral footage.

Just an awfully sad time and place to have lived in.

The way the media interviewed and questioned her kids a few days after she disappeared is the most shocking thing so far.

How are the family supposed to publicise their odeal unless through the media?

The imagery reminds me of a really grainy, miserable 80s film about a nuclear strike on Britain, called Threads.

I didn't see you make a fuss about the "hearsay" of McConville being a tout? Was that bit of "hearsay" ok?

That is because I have no comment to make regarding that. It's pointless commentating on it. How do I know? I never knew her. She could have been sticking gerbils up her arse after mass on Sundays for all I know.
It's a thread about whether or not Gerry Adams knew, or was involved in the murder of Jean McConville. There's no point trying to dismiss it at hearsay or some sort of crusade against Adams just because that's convenient.

You love to do this, to try to say what other people are doing and thinking. I'm referring to the "because that's convenient" piece of what you just said there. I'm not dismissing anything because it's convenient. I'm dismissing it because none of us have any way of knowing, and trying to say otherwise is akin to saying we have a special read on Gerry's mind. It's unsubstantiated bullshit.
The Disappeared were among the most unsavoury and high profile events of the troubles. Until all the bodies are returned to their loved ones I don't think the issue will be put to bed. The questions will be raised time and time again. Someone knows where they are.

I don't agree with making people disappear. They should have left their bodies in an easy to find place so the families could have closure.
P.S. did a search of "whataboutery" posts by me. 3. Three.
I found four, and this one which makes it five. :P

The fact that the thread is about whether people think he did something or not without having any way of knowing is the definition of hearsay.
information received from other people that one cannot adequately substantiate; rumor.

The entire thread is pointless, the finger waving going on is a bit pathetic. I also think Gerry should step down as leader of Sinn Fein before he brings the party down with him.

But did they have the authority to exile people (if they didn't murder them)?

Did the IRA have the right to be judge jury and executioners?

There was a conflict on. Get real.

I thought RTE was (is) staffed by the old Marxist guard of S.F. who jumped ship ?

There is a great book called The Lost Revolution: The Story of the Official IRA and The Workers Party that goes into this in detail. Compelling read. We have quite a few former marxists in Government at the moment. Doesn't paint the provisional movement in a great light to be honest.

Well at least I didn't bring Britain into the thread this time. But I totally agree with you, the RTE docu is a shocking and depressing look back at a dark and chilling chapter in Irish/British history, and thank God its over.

I remember the type of film you link, but not actually that one.

It's mad to think if he was in the ira, just how young he was at 23. I know I have certainly changed a lot since I was that age and was still too immature to understand life and that.

If he was it is way too young an age to be making such big decisions.

I don't know if he did anything.

But if your going to become an informant and give info on The IRA, You should know your bound to be caught.

And you deserve a bullet in the head for being so stupid.

So when the British army were involved it was 'murder of innocent people' but IRA atrocities are classed as 'part of the conflict'

Must be very hard for those families to stomach looking at Adams and the rest of his pals in their six figure salary jobs, whilst they still don't have any answers, let alone a grave to visit at Christmas or the like.

No better way than asking a distressed and crying 5 year old whether they think they'll ever see their mum again, I suppose.

I always wonder what proof they had on these people being informants

Im not saying that they wernt but did they just kill on a hunch or did they have concrete evidence

It further highlights the cruelty inflicted upon the family by the IRA. I don't blame the messenger.

That image of a mother holding up a picture of her dissappeared son is heartbreaking to watch.
Such dignity in the face of utter IRA scum yet Adams pontificates on the world stage when he has information that could greatly help these families.

Kind of ironic people here saying they had no evidence but still carried found them guilty, and with the next sentence maintains Adams was in the IRA with no evidence to put forward.

Ah now the dogs on street know Adams was in IRA.

OJ Simpson apparently did not kill his wife, but even cats know he did it.

People on here aren't going to execute Gerry Adams on the basis of their theories.
