If tonight's programme does anything, it highlights why Sinn Fein have to retire Adams as their leader. Gerry Adams may or may not be an ex member of the Provo's, but even as an apologist and spokesperson for them, he is surely tainted enough for the vast majority of the Irish electorate to streer well clear of SF in the polls (hardened SF viters aside) until he is repalced by a new leader, who doesnt have "the whiff of sulphur" about them - Mary Lou or Pearse Doherty come to mind.

There is nothing new in this program - Gerry aint going anywhere and SF are going up in the polls.

And we're supposed to think you have SFs and republicans best interest in mind when you say get rid of Adams?

    Agreed.

The party may also need to be rebranded.

    yep, same as always.

funny how given all the recordings, surveillance photos etc of IRA meetings down through the years, not one has Gerry Adams there.

not saying he wasn't head of the Belfast Brigade, he probably was, but there's seemingly never been anything other than someone's word, usually those who are completely against SF and the peace process...

And who were dissident republicans, which are more despised than the pira yet we're meant to take their word.

I answered yes to the poll. It was well known that Mrs. McConville had come up against the republican movement in the past and given Adams' position within the movement he could well have known immediately before she was lifted.

I think the hysteria around this one woman is too much. After all if it was a single man, most would accept that he would be dealt with like all touts.

We should be looking at the wider issue of how the IRA took it upon themselves to lay down the law in republican areas. The problem for some is that West Belfast would have really gone to ****e without them. Look at the growing drugs problem, joy-riders anti-social behaviour etc. I suppose its easy to criticise looking back but some forget to see that there was no law and order. The local provos dealt with problems for the people.

In case anyone missed the program, it's going to be repeated on BBC 4 at 10pm on Tuesday.. the nice popular prime-time location it deserves on British TV. No doubt it'll have millions on the edges of their seat wondering what they did with the remote.

    This^ I find scary.

No not at all (I can't stand them), but logically if they want to become more acceptable to the vast majority of the Irish electorate (ROI) with possible coalition ideas? then IMO they would have to ditch Adams!

Alot of people in the South won't vote for SF because of Adams. He is too close to the past blood letting. If SF want to really gain more seats they need to have a young leader with good economic knowlege and Adams is not the man for that job.

The most important section of the electorate is not the biggest one. They need to hold hardline republicans in and not let them move towards the dissidents.
An extra 10% of southern voters is worth nothing if the dissidents gain even 5% in the North.

Tis the truth for the moment.

As for Doherty and Mary-Lou, I think they've a while to go yet before they can get the big job.

You even bring in the gender double standards card in relation to a widowed mother of 10 in dire poverty and who was tricked on bingo night into being taken to a secluded place for an interrogation that involved a blood-letting beating? And whose 10 children were then orphaned? Sweet ****ing Jesus...

RTE can be given out to for a lot of things, but this is a factual documentary, which both the BBC and RTE are choosing to air. Propaganda it ain't

Explain to me how that makes it true then. Price and Hughes hated Adams , they seen him as a sellout. Can you not see how their evidence mightn't be seen as reliable?

    I missed the program.

    Was it sensational ?

What was learned from it ? Did they have anything shocking to show ?

Has Gerry gone into hiding ? Is there now a warrant for his arrest ?

    (number being up and all)

Yep. It's game over. Gerry Adams confessed.

I can't post a picture of the confession, so here's a direct quote:
    Dear RTE and BBC,

It's a fair cop, guv. I am the Birmingham Six.

    Le Meas,

    Gerry

And that's why he got 15k votes. Nonsense.

Not patronising just pulling you up on a false accusation, I feel I'm entitled to this.

How about answering the question I raised?

It says a lot about the standard of this thread that I got to the last line before realising that the post was sarcasm.

The thread will soon descend into whataboutery and revisionism. A moral judgement on what was shown in this documentary will have to be made by people. Too many are blinded by pure ideology.

Gerry Adams: The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.

Gerry Adams: Very well. Take him into custody.
[everyone at the press conference looks confused]

Gerry Adams: I am the Batman.

As suspected, nothing new in the programme, hearsay and the quite blatant and customary bias.
I'd love to hear one of these journos/hacks ask why would she have been killed if she wasn't a tout?

This is nonsense, a lot of people in the south won't vote for Adams because he is in SF. They'll find some reason to not vote for any new leader. SF voters are typically loyal and that is what scares the bejayus out of the established parties about their growth.
