Finished earlier than usual today so gave serrano pressing a go with 2kg DBs. Holy jaysus. 1kg it is for next time.

Some videos do it one arm at a time, but I tried with both arms. Is one arm better?

I've seen Serrano show both. Could argue one arm at a time is more functional I guess.

Nonsense question: If you're doing deadlifts, and you're lifting heavy (and i realise heavy varies from person to person, for me just starting, its 115kg), are you 'allowed' to deadlift slow? or is that a sign that you're lifting weight that's just too heavy for you?

Normally when I think of deadlifting, and when i've done it before, i always picture a swift, quick lift. No struggle, no sluggish lift etc. but tonight, at 115kg i was lifting slowly. I still did 5 reps (admittedly not with a lightning fast pace, as i did stop for a moment or so between each lift) but Im wondering is that generally a sign to lower the weight and try to build up to that, using faster, swifter lifts?

You should always be lifitng as fast as possible. But at times it's not possible to lift fast. The closer you go towards max effort the slower it will be. A truely max single could take 7 seconds or more.

Swift fast deadlifts are really "speed deadlifts" which is a specific exercise, preformed at a much lower load.

7 seconds holding on to my max deadlift would ensure i'd have no skin left on the palms of my hand !!!

I have always been thought that speed in the deadlift is key, pull 60kg just like you would 260kg and aim to get it up as quick as possible. But as said before when you are close to your max it will become much slower for obvious reasons.

Depends on many things, including the program you're using before considering lowering the weight. If your form is fine, then the weight is probably fine. But if it's breaking down (back rounding, hips shooting up before the barbell leaves the ground, etc) then maybe you are lifting too heavy.

I find that holding the bar in the base of your fingers doesn't rip the skin as much as holding in the palms. Even on long reps. Ive had to grind out 7 second reps in the past. If I fail it's probably because I can't lift it, not because I can't hold it.
I always try to lift fast, but max efforts are simply not snappy

    Cheers for the replies guys.

I'll stick with my 115kg so. My attitude/theory is that the ould body will learn to adapt fairly swiftly, anyway, and I'll be movin' on up. No point lifting 70kg if i can do 115kg (although admittedly when im deadlifting i do work up the weight a bit, and start with a lighter weight for the sake of getting in the rhythm of actually going through the motion with proper form).

I'm not really doing a programme as such. Kinda 5x5 with a makey-uppy approach. I don't want a set programe cos, although progress will be more obvious and marked, it'll feel like too much work. At the moment it's free and easy and i'm dipping in 2-3 times a week at my leisure.

Genuine Question: What would be the advantages (if any) of Leg Pressing using the Smith Machine (ie, lying flat on your back on floor, pressing the loaded bar directly above you with your feet) as opposed to using the actual Leg Press Machine?

    Nope :)

As in Nope there's no advantage? As in the guy should have just used the (free) leg press machine stationed about four yards away from the Smith Machine? Thought so...

No advantage doesn't mean no difference.

100kg on the smith machine requires a lift of 100kg.
100kg on the leg press doesn't

Flyefit Harrington St is pretty great. It's like a much roomier George's St. There are two of the big double cable machines, loads of room around the squat racks, loads of room in the free weight section. Everything is new and shiny.

Couple of growing pains issues: no bike racks outside, though you can use the railings. There aren't any water fountains from which to fill a bottle - they're all the "take a sip" kind, which is a pretty crazy oversight. I asked a member of staff about it and it seemed like it was the first time anyone had even thought it it: he went off to other staff nearby and I heard him say "We need water fountains!" as I passed.

Men's locker room is quite cramped, bit of a warren, but you can live with that.

Has anyone ever heard of www.hifi-tower.ie/ ?

They have a gym section.. and the stuff doesn't exactly seem unreasonable (I'm looking at the pulldown tower).

Are all of the bars the skinny 15kg ones like georges st or do they have some of the thicker ones too? I dont know if its just in my head or what but i hate those bars for squatting with

I didn't actually do olympic stuff yesterday so I didn't use any of the bars - I'll probably be up this evening if no one else has answered you yet.

Here's the video of my training session at CSP gym in Bray last Thursday:
    https://youtu.be/SW1IHQzua6k
15 attempts with 186kg! No misses up to 180kg.

It has been up for 30 minutes and there are 85 comments on it already. It's fair to say Clarence has a following.

I also love the polite applause at 180kg.

He probably just needs to replace the battery in his watch. Working watch -> 186....and probably 192.

They seem to be the fatter ones. Proper Olympic bars with smooth bearings.

So 187 is the Olympic record @94kg.
Why didn't he just got for 187?

His BW is 99-100kg atm according to the video.

Also, he has previously lifted185kg. Maybe he's just not bothered going for 187kg.

Because he's not in the Olympics and his PR is 185.
