Great Outdoors Eglinton street has a new name, change of owner or just a name change?

Higgins's timber factory in shantalla road seems to be getting quite a refurbishment lately. Is there something new going in there ?

That's good to hear. It would be ironic if it opened up as a factory again with trucks and materials driving in and out regularly.

    Wouldn't it just :D

Lots of work going on there for some time now, it's definitely going back into use as something.

It all seems to be going on in one half of the building and that half has been repainted on the outside too.

He's been paying full rates on that building ever since it closed so he may as well put it into operation.

I think the whole chain has gone into liquidation, along with Toys R Us.

Given that Maplin announced redundancies and closing all shops in the UK a couple of weeks back, am surprised this is only news here now..

They were hoping to sell the group and rescue some or all of the stores but that hasn't happened it seems.

I saw no announcements of what store is closing when.

Even in a closing down sale, bargains are few and far between.

Shop in Mainguard St that used to be a gift shop (I think - Barna Gifts maybe) now has signage up saying "The Sheep".

Still tradies working inside, but a peek in the door shows one of the almost-life-size woolly sheep which originally hung out in the jewellers in on Kirwan's Lane / Cross St in there, supervising proceedings.

Will be a very photographed tourist trap for the summer ....

Passed again today and seemed to be new glazing and doors being fitted. Subdivision of the large premises into smaller units maybe ?

The beauticians that was beside the Roisin looks like it's closed. Signage is all gone, shutters been down the last few days.

Just passed Higgins's timber factory in Shantalla and there's a car transporter parked outside on the main road with the top section lowered as if unloading cars. Lot of activity in the car-park too. Wonder if it's going to be a car sales place?

Definitely some kind of development alright. Would be strange if it's cars as the former Arch Motors site is for rent for a good while.. unless Higgins's rents are cheaper ?

My understanding of the Arch Motors site is that the car sales sections owner can't be contacted or something and it's causing problems leasing that part. I thought when Monaghans moved into the shop section they were going to take the car sales section too? Maybe they might yet?

Hopefully will be short term - it looks like only a portion of building is going to be used again. It really is an underused site considering its size and location. Would be ideal for residential accommodation.

It's a very big site, which has an eventual tie-in to the traffic lights at Westside going for it.

It was refused planning permission for a Tesco shopping centre in 2014, and has been pretty much left idle(ish) in the almost four years since.

Which is a pity/shame/disgrace considering that, judging by ever-escalating rents, Galway is crying out for accommodation.

A perfect example of all that's wrong with housing in Ireland at the moment - prime site in ideal location, sitting more or less idle.

Not in anyway being smart here, I haven't a word of Irish myself really, but I pass that new school every day and it's called Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh.

Enterprise, commercial & light industrial.. that covers a multitude really. You could make a case for almost any type of business operations to set up a base with this sort of zoning on a site.
