Great news. A word of caution though. What was the reaction to Deccie's appointment in 2008? Was there national jubilation?

Cannot wait to see how we play under him! :D

Big loss for Leinster. I wonder if the IRFU would have paid up for Sexton if they knew that by the season's end Leinster would be losing Schmidt, Sexton, Nacewa, Van Der Merve and potentially O'Driscoll.

Yep, and he won a GS within a year, so it's all good.

From one idiot to the next. I now officially don't give a f**k anymore. The IRFU aren't worth the stress

Great news, he should definitely go on the summer tour imo, gets to see the fringe players and hit the ground running.

Officially official. Media event at 4pm

Mixed emotions, but the very best man for the job, I hope he gets all the co-operation and buy-in he deserves from all parties. Looking forward to an upward curve in fortunes!

Got to wonder if having him as head coach will make BOD go for another year.......?

That is a hilarious thread, interesting to see the animosity towards Kidney and his playing style!

The following description seems to sum up the general reaction!

Kidney = EOS minus the backline.

    No new ideas. Nothing.

More of the same it would seem.

    Very disappointed.

This is so exciting. The idea of Schmidt getting some kind of running game going for Ireland while he has access to the best of the best players from each of the provinces is mouth watering.

Delighted for ireland, hurting for leinster.

Big Big call needed as to our new coach

Delighted although tinged a little by sadness that he's leaving Leinster. On the other hand, he's going to be around for another few years which is great for Irish Rugby.

Looking forward to press conferences now, where we're not treated like gob****es.

Schmidt will be team manager, with Declan Kidney returning to his role of head coach.
