Don't think too much now. It wouldn't suit your line.

More personal abuse. You said you think for yourself, so fire out a few examples of how we cut that €12 billion deficit. It's very important. You think social democrats like Burton and Gilmore actually want to cut services and the rates of pay of their core support base?

As I said, I'm all ears.

that's not the point. all govt. depts. are trying to save money/ cut spending. you don't see the rest of the govt. acting like complete prícks whilst doing so though. shatter's arrogance, and contempt for dialogue, separate him from his colleagues. enda should cull him before he takes over the asylum

Not getting this complete prick thing? So what if the man doesn't pretend like he's got sympathy for some bloated copper from Ballymote.

Its simple in his eyes I would imagine. Alan has a very analytical and shrewd mind, honed by years of running a successful legal practice, and being one of the movers and shakers on the New York property scene.

He see a problem (he needs to drastically reduce the outgoing in his department), he realises that given the vast majority of the spending in his department is on pay and pensions, so he knows thats where the cuts have to come from.

Frankly I'm happy to see that kind of thinking from a minister. For too long we've had disingenious 'man o' da peeeeple' types making decisions beyond their capabilities.

Cut politicians and bankers pay ;)

And only politicians and bankers of course, that should do it.

But that is exactly what they won't do ;)
They never have the law to touch the untouchables despite their legal experts.

More personal abuse. Perhaps you'd like to post on some of the points I've raised, as opposed to replying on hyperbole (riddled, brainwashers, spin doctors)?

How do we cut that €12 billion deficit, and how can Alan Shatter avoid having to make cuts, without that having ramifications for other areas such as education and health?

Keep doing what your doing , cuting disability payments and savaging public servants pay, why not increase corporation tax, cut bankers pay, cut quangos, politicans pay, get rid of the Seanad, tighten up on social welfare fraud properly, amalgamate county councils properly, cut down on appointments to state boards and their fees, tax child benefit on the wealthy, there's plenty but its easier pander cut public servants and keep private sector people like you happy as the pain goes elsewhere!

Any party spokesperson (at the time) on Justice who thought that as a solicitor he was entitled to become a Barrister without taking any exams or studying is a fool.

Thats my opinion of the man and cant believe his stupidity

It has to be said as well that the Irish are always suspicious of anyone who's not Christian. The Irish and Italians traditionally have an aversion to Jews.

Nothing personal about it. As I said..it's general. I just responded to you and your compadre.

Kenny will be Cowen and Ahern..I just hope they don't go unpunished.

it doesn't have to be some bloated copper from ballymote. i have no doubt that if shatter were planted in some other portfolio, he would show the same disdain for those for whom he was responsible then as well. he'd be a complete prick no matter who he was dealing with. thats how he comes across to me anyway.

He's just trying to draw a mod in here to defend him, if its personal abuse he's got a report button. It seems that if anyone differs with him he's abused!

You wouldn't mind posting them would you?

I do some of that thinking stuff from time-to-time, but I've yet to think up of a suitable alternative as to how that massive hole in the public finances gets cut.

As someone who thinks for themselves I'm sure you have a few suggestions.

Apart from the austerity and all the cutting would you do us the honour of stating the Recovery Programmes and Job Investment policies of the Government please, and the costs.

No, better still leave the politicans and bankers alone and cut garda pay that will do it!

Right yeah.. that's why he's going against decades of international peer-reviewed studies which show that community policing drastically reduces crime rates, and closing down stations leading to a total loss of that sort of policing in many areas.

Maybe they should cut their Garda protection.

I've really no problem with his faith, many people I know don't bring it into the equation when discussing his actions and talk so far. Then again, just because he is Jewish doesn't really give him the right to apologise for Ireland's neutrality during WWII.

I always thought Shatter was a bollox. I only found out that he was jewish on this thread. So clearly him being a bollox has nothing to do with him being jewish.

And he is the best Fine Gael has to be Justice Minister?? Makes you think; it puts him in the same bracket as harney and aherne during their ministries

I'm not an apologist for all the actions of the government. I'm just not living in the Loola land where difficult decisions don't have to be made.

I'd be in favour of cutting some of the quangos.
Getting rid of the Seanad will save sweet FA, and I believe a second house is needed to examine legislation.
Politicians pay in benchmarked under the CPA. It has been cut, and will be cut further.
State boards - absolutely. Again, a drop in the ocean. Boards are required though. Due Diligence and all that stuff.
Corporation Tax - The one where by cutting it we took in much more? Even socialist economists don't advocate raising it.
Taxing child benefits - a difficult thing to implement due to some technical challenges. What is the cut-off? The Wealthy is such a vague concept that gets bandied around here.

Investment in jobs - well if we continue to have to foot such an enormous public sector wage bill then we won't be able to do nice things. Again, it's this €12 billion deficit. It's the huge elephant in the room, but most of the gringos around here seem to be focussed on the mouse.

Yet to here of any solid alternatives. And SF and that shower don't have the solutions either.

Having a aul garda sit in an station in a country village isn't going to help.

Community policing is about being out on patrol and interacting with the people. That's what this move will allow.

He's a solicitor who specialises in Family Law. There's no law that prevents a solicitor from taking a high court case. However you just don't do it. Shatter is a freethinker and he doesn't give a fcuk what the law library think of him.

    Loola land? Leinster house?

The biggest loolas in this country have always resided in Leinster house and its environs.

Have you anything to add to the debate, or are you just here to make snide comments as usual?

So why didn't he progress to be a barrister instead of trying to bluff his way into that position?

Even if Gardai are only present in certain stations for a few hours per week, it gives people the opportunity to interact with Gardai they know and trust. People going into get forms signed etc tend to discuss crime in their locality which helps Gardai tackle it more pro-actively and with a better understanding of what exactly is happening.

I remember you arguing against spending cuts in the DF and closures of barracks etc... how come you're so much in favor of the same thing when it comes to AGS?

I guess it's because he is a bluffer. It's what it takes to get into Leinster house
