    What PS3 clusterf*ck?

I must have missed that while I was replacing my RROD 360 :D

The bizarre scattered release date, which left Europe waiting 3-4 months after the US and Japan for a release.
The complete lack of a viable competitor to Xbox live when it first launched.
The development process was by all accounts an absolute shambles to work with which is what led to so many games being developed on xbox and then ported to ps3.
    The massive price.

I had 1 or 2 more but cant think of them right now.

Well if you don't use it online much, whats the problem with not subscribing? Something you barely ever use can hardly be a deciding purchasing factor for you surely?

I recon it's also about online media entertainment over online gaming, because something like netflix, still needs a gold sub.

True, I'd forgotten Netflix/YT are Gold based on the 360 which is ridiculous really.

Right, did you seriously did not read all of my post? Or you just grabbed the shiny thing and ran away with it? ;)

I'll try to explain it even more simply.

I bought demon souls on ps3. Played for a month and them putted it away for 4 months. When I got the urge to play it again I just poped that sucker in and I was online.
With Xbox subscription I can't do it. I want to play online now and thn, but I can't because of the subscription. A do I sub for whole year, so I can play a few weeks online?
I might go for ****s and giggles play some black ops 2 on Xbox, when misses not around. So I will need to buy a game and then buy a sub too, who knows how long will play?!?! I might get bored of dam thing in a week and what do I do with sub?

that is a good point too. i was quite shocked when i realised i need gold sub for damn netflix, which is free app on every other device!

i havent played on both consoles in ages, but from 2 ps3 is still being used for media stuff. So from two new consoles i might go with ps4 ( if i ever will ), as it will be a lot more used.

as i said before though, i might still just build a steambox for TV, which will do all the "media centre" functions 100000000000000000000000 times better.

Yeah, I understood right the first time. Here's a revelation for you - http://www.cheapxboxlivecodes.com/xbox-live-gold-subscription-codes/1-month-xbox-live-gold-subscription/ You can buy your subscription in small quantities if you don't want to comit to a whole year.

I accept the point your making though in that SEN offers a basic free multiplayer experience, its hard to argue really, MS should implement something similar

Probably wont be buying Sonys or MSs offerings this time round.

Built a PC last year and haven't really used my consoles since. If the steambox turns out to be good ill probably pick one up for the sitting room.

From what I've read Shadow of the Colossus is probably the only console game from the last decade that I really wish I could have played.

So no, I think I'll be sticking with PC gaming for now.
Coming from someone who bought their first console since the SNES this generation and had used a PC exclusively since then, I can quite comfortably say you need to read more. :)

Yes, you can buy monthly subs, but does it mean i will need to sit down and pay 8£ every time i want to play some of my games online?

The highlighted bit. This what they need. Some basic online in bronze account. Then make the gold sub whatever they want. It can be even Blowjobs every week to all gold subs etc.

xbox for me..I love the controller shape and to be honest it's €30 for a 12 month xbox gold live account...that's half the price of a game for christ's sake.

Have the PS3 and XBox360. As it stands, will be getting only the new MS console.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,117 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'll be getting both but I'll be waiting a while before I get either. Both the PS3 and 360 had abysmal launches (more so the PS3, I got mine a year later and for a whole year there was pretty much nothing on it). If you get a console at launch and expect it to have a slew of great games in a years time then you are deluding yourself. I'll wait for that first must have game (like Gears of War on the 360 and it was an excellent time to buy into that console).

I'd be more inclined to go with the Sony offering, despite the bad start I ended up preferring the exclusives for the PS3 and the free online play is another bonus. I don't fell that MS game studios can offer much in the way of good exclusives that I'd be interested in.

I could say I'll wait until I have my backlog cleared, but then I would be skipping the next 2 generations. :)

No, I was just genuinely curious at what you were referring to. Each to their own. I just couldn't think of anything which had happened with the PS3 (apart from when PSN was hacked) which could have been labelled a clusterf*ck. If anything (and like I alluded to), the number of 360s which RROD'ed was the biggest clusterf*ck of this generation.
The run up the release of the PS3, the approach Sony had to the media was an absolute joke.
    E3 2006

It's been a while, so it is easy to forget some of the ridiculous stuff that was said. Like Kutaragi saying if one couldn't afford to buy a PS3 they should go and get a 2nd job to buy it. They really did have such an arrogant attitude when talking to games journos, though. I can find articles if someone asks, but this is going to be a long enough post even without them.

At E3, showing off cut scenes, no gameplay the time when Microsoft were showing off actual game play. Sony got the oohs and aahs, but it didn't really pay off when it came to playing the games. Check out some of the face offs*. There are more to be found on digital foundry that are outside of those rounds, the more recent games. They started doing games on their own.

Both systems made their mistakes too, like giving up on any committment to backwards compatibility and looking instead to re-monitise on the games from before. They also suffered the same problem in terms of reliability. Only difference is, there wasn't an increased warranty on the PS3 for the problem.

PS3 doesn't have a proper integration of users. The Wii is terrible in this regard, too, but I have one of those too. Luckily I don't look to either console for this so much, but it is a problem in terms of trying to compete generally. For instance, say you have Modern Warfare 2 (unless this has been changed via system update in which case let me know) you could only have one profile on for split screen. So, if you were doing this split screen with someone you'd have to do it twice.

No party chat. System updates take ages, and so do game patches. It has its issues.

That one is the 19th face off, and at the bottom of the page they have the first 18 face offs. the ones from 20-30 are around the site. As are newer ones where they focus on one game.

I've both a 360 and a PS3, but PS3 rarely gets touched. Provided specs/price are similar, I'd go with Microsoft, as that's likely what the people I play with would be getting (and I don't want to lose my achievements :D ).

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭sarumite

    Depends on

    1) Whether MS charge for Xbox live. I am a PS+ member and in my opinion it is a far better value for money than xbox live.

    2) What my friends have. This is a biggy. I have friends on PS, however if they were to move over to the XBOX I would consider it.

I would veer towards playstation as I want a new box for gaming, not for media streaming. Microsoft have all but given up on making games relying on 3rd party games that will likely be released on a PS as well.

I'll probably get the next Xbox at launch, just because I've been using a 360 for years, like XBL, and generally prefer Microsoft to Sony as a company these days.

That said, I'll more than likely be picking up a PS4 during 2014 (assuming a 2013 release) anyway, especially if it has PS3 backwards compatibility (no reason why it wouldn't, given they'll probably still be using Blu-Ray) to maybe catch up on some of the PS exclusives I've missed this gen.

Depending on funds, I'd also be really interested in a Steam box as well.

Oh, and don't forget the OUYA! I'm actually looking forward to getting that in a few months and tinkering around with it.

MS have been maneuvering towards (and putting its resources behind) the XBOX being an all in one set-top box. Exclusives are becoming rather thin on the ground. If I have to get one, then I may rather get the PS4 as I think it will continue to offer exclusive games, whereas I think MS will continue to rely heavily on third parties which will probably make games for both systems. If the choice is between exclusive content or timed exclusive content, I would prefer exclusive content.

While Xbox has less exclusive games (and this will probably be a continuing trend next gen for both systems, as development costs continue to rise), they do have more exclusive content, timed at least. Examples being CoD, Skyrim, GTA IV.

Something that a bit of patience will solve. In the case of the Skyrim content it was more Bethesda's crap programming than a fault on Sony's side.

I may not bother with a next gen console as I play 95% of my games on PC these days.

I have both a PS3 and 360. Have had the PS since release and the Xbox since late 2010. Use the PS from time to time for Fifa and Tiger Woods (and GTA V once it's out), but the Xbox has barely been used bar a two month period after I got it, hasn't even been turned on in over a year mainly due to the subscription fee so if I had to decide right now between a PS4 or the new Xbox without knowing a thing about either I'd definitely go for the PlayStation. The Steam Box may be a runner too but it seems fairly pointless to me if you already have a fairly decent spec PC.

Still don't know how or why people seem to think there's going to be a console release this year, late 2014 would be the absolute earliest imo, but that discussion is for another thread.

Exclusives is obviously an opinion based thing, but I was happy with the 360 exclusives. I wonder how it'll play out next generation. This generation, they really tried to win in Japan. They got Eternal Sonata as a timed exclusive, though people thought it was a console exclusive for quite a while as I recall. They got Infinite Undiscovery which got middling reviews but I had a lot of fun with. They got Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey which I found great. They got Blue Dragon which didn't impress me so much but I may go back to at some point.

It is JRPGs that got me to get a PS3 too. I have Graces F and Ni no Kuni ordered. I haven't ordered Xillia yet, but will.

The 360 also has Metro 2033 which is great. Its sequel I think will go to both consoles. Deadly Premonition is a great game. That was presumed to be a console exclusive but it looks like that'll be coming to PS3. A directors cut, at that. More gameplay stuff added, and improvements to the 360. It has been out quite a while, and the 360 version could have done with more time. Still, though, no matter the graphical weaknesses or technical issues, it was fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing what new stuff they added to it.

Alan Wake was pretty good. There'll likely be a sequel on the next xbox.

Hm, the Wii U seems to be very much overlooked on this forum. I just remembered one game other than the obvious Zelda. Bayonetta 2. It isn't going to get me to buy a Wii U on its own. I'll have to know of other games to do that.

Just to make this more rambly, a PS3 game that'll likely be good is going to be Beyond. I'd say the developers of Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain will do something good with that, and presumably on to the PS4 as well. Interesting times ahead, it all considered.

    I honestly don't know.

Neither will be a launch day purchase for me. I have Xbox, and PC at the moment. After being a PS2 fan, I wasn't hugely impressed with the PS3.

However, if M$ continue with the subscription for Live, I can't see myself continuing down that line. I'm more likely to give up on consoles after this gen, using my PC as an all round gaming/media/porn machine.

Thats really the case in point when it comes to new release consoles, there's no real reason to own them for a good while afterwards. I'd say in 18 months or so, there'll be plenty of worthy Wii U chatter

Rumours are that $ony will go down the same route for the PS4, using the PS+ structure they've established.

The PS3 could play DVDs that didn't mean it could play PS2 games, the PS2 and the PS3 are very different beast for each other and any PS4.

The PS4 would likely require additional hardware (part of an actual PS3) to play any PS3 games.
