NBA 2k13

Picked this up. It's very, very good, but I'm absolutely rubbish at it.

I'm playing MyPlayer, I got drafted by the Rockets as a SG. I find it very hard to get any rating above C+ or B-

I find that I'm mostly powerless to stop my opponent from scoring. I've tried to stand off and contain, but some players just blow past me and score no matter what I try. When they score it eats up a massive chunk of the bar, that takes about 5 or 6 positive things to recover.

I guess it doesn't really help that I don't understand most of the positions offensively, or what is expected of each. Defensively, I just cover my man no matter what, but he still ends up scoring a few times, which screws over my rating.

Seems random, that sometimes I get good shot selection, sometimes it's poor. I got an assist last night that cut the defense in half, finding a man right under the basket unmarked as most of the defense pulled in the opposition direction, and got a negative rating for a bad pass?

Any tips, advice, etc, much appreciated.

Starting off, your guy will be just crap and will be very hard to score. Your best bet is assists to keep your teamgrade score up. The best defense is to just stay with your gu as much as you can. Hold L2 (PS3) and block a path between him and the basket. Don't go for steals as your skill won't be good enough and if you miss, he will breeze past you. Just be a wall and get in his way. He will either put up a 'defended shot' if you keep in his way and you will get a 'good defending' teamgrade boost or he will pass it off.

If the guy you are defending doesn't have the ball, stick to him like glue. This puts off his teammates giving him the ball or throwing a bad pass that you can intercept.

When you are passing, try to keep to the icon passing. Hold R1 (PS3) and icons will appear over your teammates heads. Press the corresponding button to give to a particular player. This ensures a better pass.

Do the tutorial from the main menu game modes, this helps a lot and shows you a lot of the moves you might not know about.

Buy the 'Dimer' Signature move. It increases your pass rate and gives your teammate a better chance of making the basket, giving you the assist.

Patience is needed for My Player but be patient and your guy will eventually get better. I became a starting PG after 14 games for the Mavs and finally playing good, getting over 10 points and or assists. Still only finished with an A grade only once. It is way harder to get an A this year. I play on 5 minute quarters and it is easier to get an A+ on 12 minute quarters but there are like 80 games in a season, I don't have that kinda time.

Brilliant, thanks man, exactly what I was looking for. I'll give this a go and see how I get on.

I have a feeling I will be better suited to PG, so I might restart. At SG, I feel obliged to try and score more than my player is capable of right now and I ended up with C or C+ ratings. I'm also playing 5 min quarters.... 82 games per season is too much for me with 12 min quarters.

I'll probably invest quite a bit of time into this. It really is excellent imho.

Ya, being pg means you control the pace, gives you more ball time instead if waiting around hoping for a pass. Its easier to make mistakes when all eyes are on you but its more of a laugh.

Just make sure if you go PG not to get drafted by the Bucks, you ll hardly see any game time.

Not to take away from anything Sheehy said but I'll add a few points that were missed.

Firstly VC, you need a lot of this.
You can make 250 for an online game and 150 for a single player Blacktop, I posted a video a page back have a look at that though rematching or restarting seems to aware 10 the following game so best to use Blacktop once before playing some other game mode to make sure you always get the 150.
If you want to get the Rookie of the Year award you'll need to either play 12 minute matches all season or else use the Blacktop/Online games to earn VC.
It took me till April to get my player easy to play with so with my PPG at 10.6 I was miles off getting to 16 to win that.
I can put up around 20pts/4 rebounds/8 assists/3 steals with ease now but I played too many 5minute matches and I skipped around 15

(I was averaging 8/2/6/1 or so when playing 3/4s of my season with the Celtics, they played me SG since they've Rondo and without playvision and weak stats I wasn't getting anything but assists, you can ask for a trade though if you end with on a team like that. I'm with the Pistons for the last 20 of the season, getting Game of the Player every match now and winning with such ease. I'm thinking off upping the difficulty at this stage. Having the Playvision as PG for my new team along with with the 2000 or so I earned inbetween made a big difference to my all round scoring/assists.... teams call double teams on me all the time now which means more assists to the free man)

Don't worry if you're struggling starting off ESPECIALLY if you're not playing PG.
PLAYVISION isn't working in career mode this year unless you're the PG. So when you're playing any other position you're left running around with your opponent two yards away while you're hitting screens and he's getting uncontested shots.
You need to activate playvision before every game too in the presentation options(another bug).
You can alter between full and lite, it would take a practice section to get the full read though as if you move off line or pass it too early you'll see the indicators disappear and the play end.

Going back to PLAYVISION again, it's kind annoying that its not working properly as in previous years it helped me to work out the positioning off PF/SG/SF positions.
You started to realise how to set screens, why they're useful and how you score team ratings off setting a successful one and/or one that leads to a score to improve you're Team Rating.
Playing as PG though you won't be setting many, do you can set one in a situation where you're not running a play and pass it to the SG, go beside him and set a screen and hopefully it works and he breaks clear of his opponent.

If you've looked up vids on Youtube you'd also notice that most of the lads there are using a behind the back camera(2K is only available online and it zooms in a lot at the paint which means players are off screen but overall it's better as you can see breaks and can control it easier etc, offline you can use high which zooms out more).
This is essential IMO, I played 11 and 12 with the TV camera and found my passes into the paint would often go to someone else.
With the easier dribbling controls this makes the camera even more of a bonus.

Starting off, I'd recommend putting a lot into the mid range shot, this has always been my bread and butter as you can often get the space though try not to just shoot it off a dribble, you want to work it like a 3 pointer after receiving a pass in space.

Make sure when you shoot that you're not holding the analouge as you go up.
If you notice you're player doing a running shot or fade away you were holding the direction.
These shots are great when you need space as you're running out of time on the shot clock with pressure on, but by an large you just want to catch, then shoot unless it's under the basket.
I can't sink any of those with myplayer, they're more for D.Rose(the best at them) when playing with the Bulls etc
You can just want to stop and just hold shoot from that spot.

I'm getting better at driving to the basket but a lot of that has to do with improving my speed to 85 (those extra 5 have made a BIG diff).
I'd recommend holding off on speed to begin as it's costly and focusing on passing and mid range as you can get these high pretty quick.

And as also said above, go over the practice mode.
I've done it last year and this year and I'm going to go back again as theres just so much to take in.

If you're on the PS3 you can add me and I could give you some pointers, wouldn't mind playing some players who want to play the game.
Onlines just full of 3 point pull up bandits and spam pressure players.

Thanks Sheehy, I followed your tips and started to do much better with a B+ rating in the rookie showcase. The icon passing works really well, except when I get over ambitious.

The Nuggets, Magic and Celtics interviewed me after the game. The Celtics didn't want me at PG. I really wanted to go to the Magic and answered both of their questions positively, but the Nuggets went before them in the draft.

Might go back and try and go back to get drafted by the Magic. If you sign a two year contract are you definitely stuck there for that long? Not sure how the system works.

I'd say don't worry about who you get drafted to as you will be crap getting very little play time anyway, especially if it is a team with a strong PG. I got drafted to the Mavs, 17th pick at the draft. I don't know how the initial 2 year contract works but after you play 5 games, you can request or demand a trade from your GM. There were a few games where I was getting more minutes but only as SG which was annoying for me so I requested more minutes and more involved in offense from GM, I was then put back as PG and became starter after 14 games. My plan is to play out a season building my guys skills and ask for a trade next year. My goal is to play for the Bulls but Rose is one of the best PG's in the game so no point trying to get traded to them while i'm still crap.

Oh yeah, if you are on a fast break with one of your teammates, press square & x together to give him an ally opp pass, always looks nice!

Haven't got the new one yet but last year I got drafted to Pheonix which I was happy about, was playing SG or SF a lot though and asked for a trade, went to the Bulls despite Rose being there, they traded Nash with me! They then trade Rose in the first Summer, you'd think for an elite big man, nope Steph Curry and Monta Ellis both arrive from the Warriors! I was still starting PG so it didn't bother me much from that standpoint but the front court and center positions are painfully average.

Finished my first full season last night.

Left it on Professional but it got rather easy with around 15 games to go in the regular season. I just wanted to win it and get the finals MVP with the intention of upping it after.
We basically swept the entire play off series.
Those few notches I put into my speed made a big difference and I've being driving to the basket with a lot more ease since then.

Played a small few of the play offs on 12min quarters to get the MVP.
Put up around 55-61 points in those games with a considerable amount of misses.
I gave up passing the ball unless I was doubled just to get the MVP as it's entirely points scored(based).

So I upped the difficulty for the first game of my second season. 7min quarters I think and put up roughly the same figures as professional. Not finding it any harder tbh. Though it was just the one game.

To my surprise though, I only noticed today that the game has an Ultimate Team style online mode.
There was some update it notified me about and I couldn't believe I overlooked it.
Would have been playing that from the start if I had known. My Career is ok, but the AI isn't very adaptive and plays can run out in the same order a lot.
I'll prob still play a bit of it, but I certainly won't be pumping any more coins into MyPlayer as I'm dominating with him as it is.

Start saving now for MyTeam players with them.

Im 35 games in now, was having great games but the last 6 or 7 were disastrous. My team mates have gone crap, im gone worse. I cant hit any shots even though I am in 80's in all shooting, taken open 'good selection' shots, have 'dead aim' and 'knock down shooter' skills and geting good shot release. Very frustrating altogether. Sick of carrying the mavs as well so I demanded a trade to either bulls or heat and heat accepted haven't played with them yet but looking forward to it. Also, offensive rebounds are ridiculous, are there sliders to reduce them?

Gilberto, did you get to participate in the all star weekend? If u have the dlc that is.

My main game is gone as of last night, I was around 6/7 games into season two. Asked for a trade to Miami and got it, though you don't play PG too much so it wasn't a great option.

I saw a vid on Youtube on getting more VC, quitting after the Rookie Showcase before the interviews and just keep reloading(save with around 5secs in the 4th)

So I tried it and it worked, so i decided to re-do my player and try with a different base(3pts instead of athletic, I just can't drive with the ease of the AI :mad:) tried to cancel out before saving it realising I didn't know which was my main game and didn't want to overwrite it, ended up saving over it.

''Game no longer available on 2K servers so can only be played offline'' what a load of muck, you can only play for skill points if you mess up saving a second career, it's such a confusing screen you ''MYCAREER, REPLACE MYCAREER'' fair enough I could have named it better but still you seriously wouldn't know what of the 4 options to pick and if you mess up its bye bye to getting VC(which I want for MYTEAM)

So restarting but want to get the NO.1 draft, have tried it about 6/7 times. Did best with 3 point specialist but things just dry up later in the game.
Closest in my last attempt, had half off A full with 30secs left and the ball. Have that saved(to boost VC) so I'll try to get over the line in that game.

I've never really had a problem with the shooting going downhill..... mid game ya but never continuous.
I pumped a bit into consistency early one. If it's low and you go cold its pretty hard to shake it until you go out and come back in... one thing I always hated about the game.

Never heard of any sliders affecting offensive rebounds. Not sure you could, at the end of the day, it's about who has position on the inside when the shot comes.
In relation to them I'd have more of a problem with how you can't get anywhere near the basket without being bumped, the AI just locks down all 3 sides.

It's a shame the AI is a pain to play against in some ways(so hard to drive past and when you do another player hits off you while they breeze past you with ease and nobody comes across to cover the net.

So, anyone playing career mode and go to play offline (not signed in to psn or xbox live), you will get a message saying SP will be used instead of VC. I said whatever, it's just one game. Now I find out you can't go back to VC. I have pumped an unreal amount of hours into building up my player with VC from facebook and android apps and playing other 2k13 modes. No way I will be able to improve my player any more with the sh1itty SP you get after a game. Not gonna play this any more until a fix is out. Sickened.

Once it's removed from their servers its gone.
Same thing happened to mine through picking the wrong file to overwrite, lazy system, so hard to understand which one I was picking.

I suppose though if you were willing to put time into the other modes you can build the coins and return.
What you could try as well is to start a MYTEAM and if you've no interest in playing, try shifting players and getting the cheapest in each position there should be a bit of a difference back(you can't sell less than a full team, but some players are worth 800 and pretty sure some were worth half nothing)

Ah I was finnaly at a place where I was getting 20-30 points pergame with 10 assits. Leading the heat with Lebron, Wade and Bosh, unbeatable. I can't face starting it all again. I might come back to it in the new year.

Thanks for the tips with this. I'm about 50 games into my first season and I'm regularly getting a good points total per game.

I got a high of 37 last night, with 4 or 5 assists. On a run of 8-2 at the moment. Helps a lot that the coach traded Carmelo Anthony in.

I got the Floor General perk, in addition to Dimer. Helps an awful lot.

hi guys, i was tinking of getting this or madden for christmas. Was just wondering is the online features good in the game? I havent got madden or an NBA game in years so I was hoping for a second opinion.

I'm getting this at Xmas as I love the series having hopped back in for 2K11, but I have Madden 13 and it really is excellent this year, the best for a long time imo. What I will say is that NBA 2K has a very steep learning curve, whereas Madden is more user-friendly, but if you dedicate the time to NBA 2K you will be rewarded with a stunningly realistic sports sim.

Anyone confirm a cheap price for this , HMV dont have it , or Xtra vision everywhere seems to be 54 ish. Amazon is the cheapest option.

Also is a online pass needed , if not may get it 2nd hand

Unsure, if NBA 2K12 is anything to go by, expect to play the Miami Heat every game and sit back while LeBron dunks in your face.

Boards.ie has an absolutely brilliant Madden league, we have our own forum full of guys playing in the league every week (around 30 user members in a league of 32, but we have spots open! We'll be playing right up until Madden 14 comes out) and they are all really good for helping beginners. The standard isn't that high, and the lads who are very good are incredibly helpful to the newbies. We tried to set up a Boards league for NBA 2K12, but it was largely inactive.

So I would recommend you get Madden and join our league! Although I could give you a better idea of how NBA 2K13 is after Xmas when I get it.

Word of warning on Zavvi, I ordered NBA 2K13 from them on the 6 of November. It took Zavvi 4 days to despatch, I waited a week and it didn't arrive. They told me to wait the 21 days before I could declare the item lost, and then get it re sent. It was sent out to me again on the 3rd of December, and I have yet to receive it... I think they have issues with postage, as a quick search online shows many people with similar complaints. I have been in contact with them, and I am in the process of trying to get a refund off them, but they want to send it out to me again... TBH, I have no faith that if it was sent to me again that I would receive it.

That is my experience with them , but I may just have been unlucky... Anyways if I can manage to get a refund I will pick up this game around Christmas in the shops!

Available for €29.99 on ps3 store for today and tomorrow. I've waited ages for a price drop. Heard terrible things about the pc version so I avoided that.

Just after starting into my career on this. I find it's impossible to bring up your stats on this. Maybe getting 90 SP a game.

What's this craic about VC? Is this only online? Is there any point in even playing this game when I can might only be able to make one upgrade every few games. Really pissed off if this is the case.

Also any idea if you can turn the autosave off? Doesn't seem to be possible after a bit of searching... I really don't need the game to save every time I change fúcking menu.:rolleyes:
