Nope. If I didn't know gamestop would give me a pittance for it, I'd trade my vita in.

CeX don't float your boat either?

Not really. I've been going there less recently as well, some of the staff are really rude I think./

    xtra vision appoints receivers...

Unless they completely change the way they do business I just dont see why someone would buy them.

Looks like HMV all over again.

Bit of a shame. Was handy for pickin up the odd game now and then. That said I probably spent more money on rubbish cheap games that only got played a handful of times if ever as impulse buys. Oh look its a tenner sure why not sort of thing.

Really trying to curb that side of my purchasing and instead only buy games I really want to play. So hard though the horder/collector/impulse buyer in me just cant help it when I see something!!

Gamestop will be in uber take the piss mode now. I don't mind though you can get everything cheaper online.

Was there ever anything about gamestop getting into Retro games again?

That was Game, they tried to sell Jaguars and games. Of course that might have went better with a console with more than one game on it with owning.

But wasnt there something a few months ago about Gameslop getting into it aswell?

    What kinda rude?

I only ask as whenever I've asked about something advertised on their Irish website as being in stock at their Liffey St outlet, and not on the floor (which happens), I get this reaction more in key with my having just blown chunks on their lino and then handing'em a toothbrush to clean it up. Staffer then goes and has a waffle with his/her co-workers instead of checking the computer right in front of them. They'll say 'out of stock', you check the website on your phone, and it'll say 'in stock'.

Of course, you email their Irish website/Franchise HQ about whatever item, and you'll just get a response confirming that said item was in stock, but in the eon it took for'em to get back to you, it's not like it matters.

Wondering if this is a common experience. I like their exchange-prices, most of the time.

Gamestop US have been waxing on it for the better part of a year. They already offer older games as part of their clubcard redemption scheme. Well, as least, they did, and will again, judging by the 'coming soon'.

I reckon Parcel Motel has been the death of Gamestop, at least to me.
I can buy almost any game for a lot less and pick it up when it's convenient.
I can shop with it on Amazon, Zavvi, Play and Ebay.
Why bother with overpriced bricks and mortar.
I know, it's taken me a long time to get here, most of you have shipped this way for years, I guess it's my youth really....

They really went downhill after I left.
That's been on the cards since 2009 as far as I know, there was talk of it back when I was there.
They straight out told us at a training day that they have basically no credit with game suppliers when we bemoaned our lack of a range of titles.

Like that, stuff says its in stock on their website, but when you go in and ask they say the website needs updating or something. Or just like, really dismissive, not supposed to name people here obviously, but the american/canadian girl is really rude, couple of the guys are too.

It's weird CeX have such ubiquitously poor customer-service feedback; they're a franchiser, it must be in the HQ-model somewhere.

Probably "rare" as well, according to one fade street based shop.

I was in RAGE the other day and the prices did seem a tad high, particularly on little things like Gameboy carts.
Now, I understand they can't just give them away, but never the less, €15 for an unboxed copy of most titles is a tad extreme imho.

€15 for loose Gameboy carts? Yeah, I'll pass

Did anyone see their facebook page, those mystery carts people have been buying. I wouldn't pay 15 for it like, probably rubbish.

That's pretty steep,I know b&m shops are always going to be more expensive than online but then there's fleecing people. Just because something is retro doesn't mean it should be expensive. there's a 2nd hand shop near me who wanted 100 quid for an unboxed snes and a handful of crap games, ehhh, no.

15 for a gameboy game is pretty extreme. Can't imagine people paying that unless its pokemon or something with as strong a nostalgia factor. When they opened I got a dreamcast(sans cables) and two controllers for 20.

25 for pokemon games right now, even the GBC ones

Perhaps the shops are limited in the prices they can charge.
What with rents, staff wages, taxes and local charges, heating etc, public liability insurance, maybe the only way to meet these costs is by charging a certain amount for each item.
An online shop gets to build it's storeroom anywhere it likes, using anything from a garage to a lock up to keep it's stock.
After that a handful of staff and a computer to keep track of the aforementioned stock and off you go.
Locating in a tax haven where you can dodge tax on cheap goods works in your favour as well.

Are we being too hard on the likes of The RAGE when we look for their prices to compare favourably with online prices.

Could another store in the same market, Retropolis, possibly have an opinion here?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

retropolis is tiny though. And I didn't notice that a big difference between the two.

Anyone that expects them or any other bricks & mortar to compare favourably to an online shop is being a bit naive.

Looking at their Facebook page they've been about since Nov 2010 (including surviving that flood they had) so they must be doing something right. If folks are buying stuff at those prices then why bother lowering them drastically to keep a few extra folks on a specialist forum happy? I would imagine the positive exposure they get on FB dwarfs any negative comments that appear on here every so often.

Don't know what the fuss is about really - if you don't want to pay their prices then just buy online - bigger (and cheaper by the sounds of it) selection anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,546 ✭✭✭✭OwaynOTT

The rage and Retropolis will all be a moot point as soon as our local two of a kind merchant opens up his store with his buy a game get a boxed 3do fz1 for free policy. Pretty sure he mentioned that before.

My cash is my cash, & although this sounds cold, the extortionate rental & running costs of a shop in Dublin is not my problem. The onus is always on a shop to incentivise custom imo, the world owes nobody a living.

There's also nothing stopping the likes of RAGE opening up an actual online shop, & exposing themselves nationwide...yet they don't. I've said it loads of times, a cheap & cheerful online store that has prices & a postal option is a complete no brainer for a retro games shop...anything less is just lazy & half arsed.

I would imagine that they get a lot of footfall from the nostalgic buyer, just looking for a quick buy it now, not us retro looking for a bargain gamers. And tbh that has to be expected. I have only ever been there twice but i'd imagine if ya have an idea what some game you want is worth and try haggle with them instead of coming here complaining, there might be some leeway?

I love a bargain, but if RAGE offered me a way to buy games without having to into town & park etc, I'd happily pay the going rate/ebay price too & do my bit to support them

Maybe next time you're in there, if ya find something ya want, say fot 15, ask them is that the best price, would be interesting to see if they understand that someone 'into' games knows the difference from what we call 'passing trade'. Worth a shot and nothing to lose, everything to gain!
