This must be the best off-season ever! So much drama.

Trade could be nullified. The Jets would owe Denver recapture money of around 5million. Might be unwilling to pay it.
Apparently McDaniels was responsible for the contract - still cleaning up that clown's mess.

Wow. That Broncos FO sure is thorough. I still have major doubts about that set-up. This has very little to do with the McDaniels era, these types of contracts are routine but the trading teams usually waives their rights to the paid out money.

Can't understand what this is about, a ploy to nullify the trade, pure neglect or something else.

The Jets were plenty disfunctional all by themselves last year without Teb ow. I doubt his presence could make things worse tbh.

I don't think Tebow will cause a problem in the locker room - he's not been brought there as a genuine no. 2 to Sanchez, but as a situational starter/inside the 5 player. He was nearly impossible to stop from 5 yards and in running the ball - all for the price of a 4th rounder? Certainly worth a flier.

And from what I've read Sanchez needs to be looking over his shoulder to get the best from him. This is a guy who has wongames in the NFL, and there's not too many teams that have backup qbs that have won games in the playoffs.

Finally - Tebow's passing will only improve. His reading of defences will improve, his pocket awareness will improve, the game will slow down foe him. He's still a very young man, that works hard on his game and has the intangibles that Sanchez does not. Good in the clutch, inside the 10 and a great leader. All for the price of a 4th rounder.

The Jags were mad not to pursue him - Blaine Gabbert? Give me a break. He could have saved the franchise there. Marketing, Jersey sales, local interest as well as national interest would have sky rocketed. The Jags had a decent D, a great RB and Tebow would have been a good fit there (apart from the fact the coaches didn't want him!!)

Everything to do with McDaniels - the contract he negotiated with Tebow basically paid out a ton of money at the start of the contract. This was not the signing on bonus - it was base salary.

    This was the contract -

    Base salary
    2010: $1.295 million (fully guaranteed)
    2011: $1.618.75 million (fully guaranteed)
    2012: $1.942.5 million (fully guaranteed)
    2013: $2.266.75 million (fully guaranteed)
    2014: $2.590.5 million ($567,500 guaranteed)

But McDaniels agreed to pay $7.25million of the base salary upfront. In other words if the Broncos trade him now and waive the recapture money then they are trading him and paying his wages for the next two years. The Jets would get Tebow and unless he met some very stringent targets (being a top 5 ranked QB winning an MVP or winning a SB) they wouldn't have to pay him a penny until 2014 and then only half a million is guaranteed.

It about not paying a player who isn't on the team - and not allowing another team take the player and pay the player nothing for two years.

Jets twitter announced trade before the NFL did. The poor intern who runs that is ****ed.

Jacksonville back in play now according to Schefter (who must have wire taps on people phones along with Jay Glazer)

I'm starting to think the Jets won't pay the compensation which after everything that's unfolded in the past 9 months is another facepalm for the organisation.

Why would any other franchise pay the $5m?

McDaniels wasn't the GM, he had very little to do with the contract specifics. It was done under the old rookie pay scale, remember, so huge up front money was entirely the norm.

Fact is the trading team invariably waives their right to the money - which would only activate were Tebow to retire in the next three years - as a pre-requisite to the trade happening. Something funny is going on.

Broncos are going to kick themselves if this falls through and no-one else comes in for him.

McDaniels negotiated all the contracts - he was given all the power just like Shanahan. the huge up front money for rookies prior to the new pay deal was for large signing bonuses - they are the responsibility of the team that signs the bonus, they are in the contract as recapture money in the event of a player retiring but always waved in the case of a trade.

This has nothing to do with signing bonuses - it is about base salary - McDaniels paid Tebow $7.25million up-front of his guaranteed $9.7million base salary over 5 years. Whoever gets Tebow only has to pay him $1.65million over the next 3 years.

    1. - they waive the signing bonus - not the base salary
    2. - nothing to do with him retiring - the recapture would automatically kick-in for that.
    3. - damned right something funny is going on - McDaniels was stupid (not for the first time) he was starry-eyed with having Jesus Almighty on his team - Tebow's agent too him for a ride and the contract is causing problems for the Broncos and anyone who wants Tebow.

Now I may be completely off the mark on this one but I have actually gone back and read the details of Tebows contract from two years ago - and Schefter has tweeted about the same issues -
Tebow had 6.2M salary advance in 2011, 5M left on advance, Broncos want money back from NYJ as per assignment of contract.

It was still entirely the norm, and I'd hugely question how much of a legal contract McDnaiels actually defined. The fact is no team is going to give draft picks and 'straight money, homie' for a player. The Broncos have to eat this or else they're going to have to cut him and get no picks at all and still have the liability they're complaining about right now.

It now appears that the Jags thought they could get Tebow on the cheap and have come scampering back because of the Jets involvement. Elway told the Jets they had to pay the money or else - the Jets are still involved (which indicates that the money is now a side issue) - and now so are the Jags. The issue is not money - it's now about who is making the best offer and the fact that Tebow wants to go to Florida and not NY.

Update - word from Jacksonville source are saying he is going to the Jags.

I'd love if he went to Jags, less circus and pressure, his hometown and they'll likely pay up more too :D Want him? Give us a 3rd so.

After all, that five million in cap room could snag us another FA or two!

Why would they pay up more? If they wanted him in the first place they could of trumped the Jets offer, unless EXF are fairly dumb at this stuff.

    Confirmed to the Jets.

    Schefter:
Tim Tebow and a seventh-round pick to the Jets for the NY's fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick.

    and
Jets will pay half of the $5 million in compensation back to Denver that was in dispute in Tim Tebow trade.

Yeah its done now to the Jets:(

Tebow Goes To New York sounds like the most awesome sitcom ever devised.

If he was longing for the South while in Denver, I can't imagine what he'll make of living in the capital of the world.

Utter failure stalks the Jags yet again, too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,965 ✭✭✭Syferus

Apparently it's Tebow's choice now, Jags or Jets.

Hard to understand why the Broncos have suddenly allowed Tebow to chose after trading him to the Jets, if the Jags have upped their offer to equal then the Broncos should have pushed them to begin with.

Shambolic behaviour by the Broncos front office, they've really messed around Tebow and not even his more ardent critics can say he isn't one of the classiest individuals to ever enter the league, he deserved far better than all this.

EDIT: Wow. Tebow chose the Jets. He must see value in New York as a platform for his message. One thing Tebow has zero trouble with is pressure. The same can't be said for Sanchez.
