I think it means proceed if it's safe to do so. Seems road coming from right has right of way.

I agree, he attempted to enter a lane that was already occupied, but it still shows the risks of undertaking.

It shows the risks of driving in the outside lane when there is nothing on the inside one, and then not checking your mirrors...

In this case they were both stupid, but what if the truck had to avoid something in his lane, a crash spilling over from the other side or broke down or something? If nobody overtook on the incorrect side then there would always be a free lane to move in to in emergencies and a safe path to the hard shoulder. It would also mean you couldn't be trapped in the wrong lane coming up to your exit.

The description of the video says that there was a woman and two kids in the Lexus, thankfully unharmed. Could have been a very nasty one.

He shouldn't have been in that lane, that's the point!

I don't see how someone can get 'trapped' in a lane coming up to their exit, you're supposed to anticipate that and be in the lane already, not wait until you actually see the exit

I don't disagree with anything that's been said about the undertaking video.
The truck is moving along in a line of overtaking traffic. At the time of the incident there was still a car immediately in front of the truck which it seemed to be waiting to overtake. At the time of the incident I believe the truck itself was trying to perform an undertaking maneuvre.
The undertaking car was abreast of the truck when the accident happened. Would that have been a blind spot for the truck?
I also don't believe the undertaking car is without fault.
They've needed to brake 4 times in the 40 seconds we can see in this clip while driving behind the truck.
They undertook at the first opportunity without being able to see if the truck itself was waiting for a vehicle in front to pull in.
I'd be very interested to know what the courts decided on this one.

I think the truck should have been only in that lane at that point, aside from the traffic in front of it that it could have been overtaking, if they had pulled back right they would have been cutting in far too close to the car they had just overtaken. Everyone in that clip was driving far too close together, as demonstrated by the constant braking.

They were both wrong, but we're examining the overtaking on the wrong side by the other car, saying 'but the other guy shouldn't have been there' doesn't make it any less wrong or dangerous.

I think part of the problem is driver training here, because the car obviously had not idea how to properly react in an emergency situation, because it looks like he just panicked and stomped on the brakes whilst jerking wildly at the wheel.
Easily avoidable accident with a tiny bit of cop on.

That's the main lesson to take away from that vid. If either driver had been driving defensively the crash would not have happened.

    Wow thats horrible.

It looks like he did not even react when they stepped out. It seems like he should have been able to stop for that one.

It was horrific all right. It seems to be only wide enough for one way, but in a housing estate you never know. Look both ways everytime kids!

Every parked car is faced the opposite way which suggests that it might be a one way.

    Driver should have reacted sooner.
    Pedestrian should have looked!

Undertaking, the consequences. Forward to about 50 seconds and watch.

I dont think its against the law to undertake in America, well maybe it is but nobody paid any heed to lane discipline when I was there anyway. Looks like truck drivers fault in that case, but still, distinct lack of driver intuition from the driver of the car, you should be aware of overtaking trucks like that, they can see less!

**** in the truck didn't check his mirrors, and went right.

From looking at the clip a few times, it looks like the dash-cam was on a van. To the right, you can see cars going the opposite direction, so I'd wonder if the road is two way, but as there's cars on both sides of the road, it's turned into a one lane road?

Anyhoos, the driver should've stopped quicker, but it doesn't seem like the mother looked both ways before crossing, but was able to get out of the way of the van before it hit her?

According to the comments on the youtube video I put up only the lorry driver was fined for dangerous driving. Don't know if that's true or not.

Trucks have blind spots and that car put himself right in the blind spot while undertaking.

Yes you should always be aware of whats around but he was moving over to let the faster moving vehicles pass safely.

That is undertaking; like overtaking, but going on the inside.

What Strituck did in his video was pass the car on the inside.

Passing the car on the inside is not always undertaking.

Whatever you call it (pass on the left, undertake) or just overtake on the left, it's always the same thing.
It doesn't matter if you change lane before the manouver or not.
If you are going quicker than other vehicle in the same direction on the same road, you are always overtaking, whether it be on the left or right.
Changing lanes to proceed with the manouver has nothing to it.

I think the truck driver was going to undertake the car in front of him/her.

As I said a few pages back. Undertaking is deadly because of trucks/vans blind spots. This just proves the point. If someone wants to drive illegally in the trucks blind spot, on their head be it. Its 100% cars fault. Besides the fact it was brutal over-correcting by the car driver that caused the big off.

    As did comedy American suspension.

This is another thing that should be beaten into people DO NOT SWERVE.

Reason you don't swerve is because you are still in control when you swerve you have lost control.

If the car had say made contact with the car/van/truck yes there may be damage but in most cases the car or other vehicle would not go flying off the road like in the previous video.

I understand it's a reaction to turn away but in these situations it is the worst thing to do.

I agree that "undertaking" is never a clever move and this vid proves that point. The vid looks American so the it would not have been illegal, however to say it was 100% the car drivers fault is wrong.

The truck made the bigger mistake by entering a lane without being sure it was safe to do so and would be most likely found to be liable for the accident.

However if the car driver was driving defensively this would not have happened.

What I see here is 2 bad drivers, if either one had done the right thing it would never have happened.

I've said it here before but being the rightist bloke in the orthapidic ward or worse is not where you want to be.

Drive defensively and don't let the gob****es get you.
