'Gilmore Girls' is a quality TV show. (minus the syrupy theme tune)

    :o

My missus watches the entire 8 (9?) seasons at least once a year.

i only "thanked" the "lets all laugh at depression" thread so as not to be left out cos it seemed like the right thing to do. I haven't read it yet

You should give the first post a read. One of the best I've read on any forum, ever.

I hate the GAA. I hate the parish nonsense that goes along with it, the pointless county rivalries that become part of "the craic" when games are played, the silly under the counter payments to everyone but the players, the time given over to showing games, analysis and results on RTE, the culchies that it brings to Dublin every year. Hate everything about it. I also hate people wearing their county/parish/club jerseys on holidays abroad.
Dam culchies coming to Dublin and spending money and helping the local economy :D

I really dont get the giving off about culchies "coming to Dublin." Dublin is not just a city, it's a county as well. It's got homegrown culchies of its own

ive just been reading that thread and the opening post appears to be written by a person who seems to have no problems whatsoever in life at all, except for the fact he is a depressing little ****

I find that interesting. I read it just now and as someone that does 'suffer' (I hate the word - evokes too many 'poor me' feelings for my personal taste) I found it to be excellently written. The amount of thanks he got seems many others would agree.

I think you mean "depressed," not "depressing."

And if a person's only problem in their life is that they're a depressive, then they still have a massive problem.
I wouldn't wish serious depression on anybody.

When I said he was a terrible lyricist, I meant that to be taken as all-embracing and include song titles too...

The biggest obstacle to feminism succeeding is women themselves.

To complain about being expected to look pretty, cross their legs, be sexually inactive unless married, and then to dress their baby girls in pink, buy them dolls and kitchens as toys, prevent them from socialising as freely as they would allow a boy, is total hypocrisy.

To dress and act like a slut, then be offended by people's reaction, is intentional ignorance, and has nothing to do with feminism, but only serves to perpetuate that particular woman's inferiority.

Dressing in pink? Stade Francais dress in pink, I don't think it's ever hindered them. Dolls? Really? That's an issue? So if the toy companies stopped making dolls would that help 'empower' female children? I'm not convinced, I reckon if I turned up with FIFA 12 and two controllers to my niece's place talking about women's lib, I'd get a few strange looks.

The second part, you're probably bang on.

I think he means that people thrusting female stereotypes on girls from a young age (dolls, kitchen toys) only perpetuates the problem rather than just the existence of the dolls themselves

What would you give a female child then? As a gift or whatever? If you're ruling out 'stereotypical' toys? Seeing as how almost every single toy imagineable has 'stereotypical' qualities?

I was just trying to clarify his point.

I give my niece a train recently because she seems to be into them but I think thats irrelevant.

90% of quality rap music was released between 1987 and 1994.

There is no quality rap music.

    Probably not an unpopular opinion.

Thanks Grimebox for answering for me: that's exactly the point i was making. By the way, im a she.

Token Im not ruling out stereotypical toys, boys or girls toys. Let the child choose, instead. If she wants dolls, let her have dolls. If she wants a toy gun, or a mechanno set, let her have it.

Just don't impose the mammy kit on the child. It does happen. I know one little tombboy toddler who loves playing with her brother but mammy wants her to be a little pretty princess so she can't play outside cuz she'll mess her designer clothes. Shed much rather be climbing trees and playing football than sitting inside and looking pretty.

By the way. Im not complaining about toy companies. I think it was obvious i was talking about childhood conditioning by mothers.

It's part of the lyrics too. I know because my boyfriend tortured me with it. :D

    Full song:
    I was a good kid
I wouldn't do you no harm
    I was a nice kid
    With a nice paper round
    Forgive me any pain
I may have brung to you
    With God's help I know
I'll always be near to you
    But Jesus hurt me
    When he deserted me, but

    I have forgiven Jesus
    For all the desire
He placed in me when there's nothing I can do
    With this desire

    I was a good kid
Through hail and snow I'd go
    Just to moon you
I carried my heart in my hand
    Do you understand?
    Do you understand?
    But Jesus hurt me
    When he deserted me, but

    I have forgiven Jesus
    For all of the love
    He placed in me
When there's no-one I can turn to with this love

    Monday - humiliation
    Tuesday - suffocation
    Wednesday - condescension
    Thursday - is pathetic
By Friday life has killed me
By Friday life has killed me

(Oh pretty one, Oh pretty one)

    Why did you give me
    So much desire?
When there is nowhere I can go
    To offload this desire
And why did you give me
    So much love
    In a loveless world
When there's no one I can turn to
    To unlock all this love
And why did you stick me in
    Self-deprecating bones and skin
Jesus - do you hate me?
Why did you stick me in
    Self-deprecating bones and skin
Do you hate me? do you hate me?
Do you hate me? do you hate me?
    Do you hate me?

Apart from at the Christmas party in Nyon where we had Foie Gras, I suppose you are right. The field staff can be quite militant, the office staff however could not, in the most part, give a flying fcuk about animals. It's a publicity machine, and a very well-oiled one.

Great organisation to work for, they really look after their staff and pay great wages. Wasn't totally for me though so I left and joined Unicef in London instead in a similar role.

The office staff not as much but the executives care very much. Their also quite miltiant allegedly pulling funds from villages if they think certain species arent being protected. The field workers like most people working in conservation in some countries are quite militant because they have to be.

I am the queen of style, baby!

I think it's just the maudlin-ness (that's totally a word, swear) of that song. Like a depressed cat hitting a sad baby.

That is something like he would say, maybe your more alike than you think.

Plus he has done alot for lesser known Irish bands in the past.

Strict observance of Islam is incompatible with Irish society.
