I downloaded the App to my iphone last week and am having great fun with it so far. Leave work, switch it on and away I go. Tis only when I get home I realise there are segments of road that other people have recorded as an "Achievement", which I guess you can do on a Garmin. Still it's nice to see a few famillair names in the list of achievements and their times. I don't know when the segments begin and end as my iphone is in my pocket (don't know if it tells me anyway) so have to go all guns at place where I think there might be KOM's. Some of them times are mad and I think they're either on a motorbike/car or drafting a bus or someit. Of course if you're doing a road route that's raced on and Strava recorded previously you'll never get near the KOM, right.

Makes me want a Garmin even more now but this will have to do until I get a buyer for one of my kidneys.

    A garmin won't tell you when you're hitting a segment either ;)

Go on to the main site on your computer and explore for segments, so you know where to kill yourself to get a KOM in future, and spend the other parts of the spin doing as little work as possible.

Quick Q lads, sorry, I just joined Strava... you can't create (or browse for) complete routes, only segments - is that right? So if I wanted to plan a route I'd have to use another site like bikehike.co.uk ?

well you could just look at segments and see what route people took to get their or just follow people on boards and see their rides.

    Heres my last one:

I just joined also. Side question, tried to transfer my Endomondo history through FB which worked OK, but about 10 or 12 gpx files did not upload correctly, they appear random and Strava doesnt give a reason for the error.

How best to get these in? Email (to Strave) them or create manually?

    Cheers

The best way to do it would probably to download all your routes from the other website and upload them manually to strava.

    Heres my last one:

    http://app.strava.com/rides/18457785

OR see the "Rides on this segment"
    http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/segmentDetails.php?segmentId=app.strava.com%2Frides%2F18457785%23335576692

Its got a kom notifier (which i havent used) but seems like a good idea if you are a few places away. Obviously strava gives those 'uh oh' mails if you actually did have the kom before.

As there are not too many missing I will take your advice and upload manually

I got my Garmin 410 with HRM for about £139 on Amazon. It's worth keeping an eye out for them as they do sell off older models cheap. The edge series designed for bikes are grand but unless you need navigation maps, they're pointless.

Also I think you can plan courses on the Garmin Connect website that correspond to the strava segments and upload them to your watch so that way you'd get notifications

That link is cool, especially the 'Additional Details' tab and then the 3D profile for a particular climb, eg. Mahon falls & Tickincor which are both on the SKT160km this year.

I'm liking the 3D profile in the 'Additional Details' too.

Probably the steepest in Cork, Temple Hill:

Steepest I've done, Almifi Coast, up to 33% in parts

Anyone else got some savage steep stuff?

Not climbed it but this lunacy was in the Giro Del Trentino I think. Someone posted a video in here somewhere of the eurosport commentary. Crazy stuff

I noticed a couple of "segments" demanded my attention after I finished my ride yesterday.

I didn't pay them much attention. Didn't click through to examine each one of them in more detail, nothing like that. Of course, I don't care about where I place on those segments, especially not vs other members of the boards club. That would be silly.

On a completely unrelated topic, anyone know if Met Eireann has a page on its website that predicts the time and direction of strong winds for certain roads in the Dublin area? Just curious.

Got this in the post this morning.

Now, do I get it sewn onto my Boards jersey sleeve or not? Don't want to look like a boy scout!!!

Just after joining strava there. It should keep me motivated for the winter training. 1 question tho, I have seen segments in my area that I want to have a go off. I have an edge 500. Do I just cycle thru the segment on a spin and it will pick off the segment on strava site or do I need to start it recording at the start of the other guys segment?

Yes, Just record your entire ride, and Strava will match up all the segments you pass through when you load the activity when you return home...
