New info regarding 3DS shopping channel source
The digital shopping experience on the DSi is notoriously slow and clunky, with lengthy waits accompanying most screen transitions. Nintendo is going to be making some fixes for the 3DS version of the shop.

During an investors briefing today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata showed a demonstration video for the 3DS shopping channel. You can view the clip for yourself in this video from the event by forwarding to the 40 minute mark.
    nintendo-shows-improved-3ds-shop-interface-20101029103023059.jpg

As explained by Iwata during the demonstration, the shop interface is split into categories, which he referred to as racks. These racks contain software corresponding to a theme -- for example, "Mario Games."

Select a rack, and you're instantly taken into a list of games available on the rack. Iwata noted that the transitions between screens is quick. You can see this for yourself in the video feed.

Different from the sales-only DSi Shop, the 3DS shop blends sales an promotions in one. Iwata explained that it's like combining Wii Shopping Channel with the Nintendo Channel. The latter has videos, demos and information about games.

In the 3DS shop, when you select a game, you're given the option of viewing info about the game, viewing streaming movies, reading user opinions, and even downloading a demo. You can also jump directly to the game's home page. As shown at the Nintendo Conference last month, the 3DS is capable of quickly transitioning into its web browser.

Iwata did not say if the demo option would be available all games. Such a move would be a dramatic shift for Nintendo, which has made available demos for just a few of its WiiWare download games.

The shop will also organize games based off recent releases and popularity, and will include search functionality. The reason for making all this effort to smoothen the digital shopping experience, explained Iwata, is to promote digital sales. It looks like with the 3DS Nintendo plans on making an even bigger push for direct download games.

The best thing Nintendo can do is make demos mandatory for all games on the store. It is something I wish Sony would do too.

3DS has two Resident Evils on the way. Resident Evil Revelations was announced way back at E3. Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D was announced in September at Japan's Nintendo Conference press event.

These are two totally different games, but until now they've shared one annoying common point: we didn't know anything about them. Enter Japan's Weekly Famitsu, which has a huge blowout on both games this week.

Of the two games, Mercenaries 3D looks like it's farthest along. Famitsu lists a 70% completion level for the game.

For those unfamiliar with the series, "Mercenaries" originates from a bonus mode that has been appearing in Resident Evil games since Resident Evil 3. It's basically a post clear time attack mode where you blast away at enemies.

On the 3DS, Mercenaries 3D will feature Wi-Fi co-op play for up to two players. Current confirmed characters include Chris Redfield and his little sister Claire, Jack Krauser and Hunk.

resident-evil-revelations-20101208030952899.jpgJill and Chris in Revelations. Other BSAA members are scheduled to appear as well.

While early screenshots made the 3DS version look like the Mercenaries mini game in RE5, Capcom is working on some major changes, most notably in the area of control. As with the RE5 Mercenaries, the action normally takes place from behind your character's back. However, when you ready your weapon, the game now switches to a first person view. While in this view, you aim with the analogue slider. It's also possible to move while firing, although we're not sure how just yet. The game will also have stylus control support, although this is also an area that has yet to be detailed.

Also new for the 3DS is a character customization component. You'll be able to customize your characters in various ways, including slotting skills which can level up, and customizing your weapons.

One thing that won't be added for the 3DS is a story mode. Like its console mini game counterparts, The Mercenaries 3D will be pure gameplay.

If you want a story, you'll want to turn to Revelations, which looks set to deliver a more traditional experience. And by more traditional, we mean 32-bit era traditional. It may be hard to believe given the level of gunplay in RE5 and RE4, but Resident Evil was once a survival horror game. Revelations attempts to bring the survival horror back.

You'll have to worry about enemies popping out from unexpected locations, and also concern yourself with limited ammo. The game's use of 3D will help out here, as director Koushi Nakanishi told Famitsu that the 3D view will make you feel that there's actually something in the depths of the halls. The ability to output the visuals in 3D is actually the reason the staff decided to emphasize the horror aspect.
resident-evil-revelations-20101208030952274.jpgIt may look like RE5's Mercenaries mode, but there are some major changes for the 3DS.

Joining the return of survival and horror elements, Revelations also promises exploration and puzzle solving. Sounds like a trip back into the 32 bit era! Although based off Nakanishi's comments to the magazine, it seems as though these traditional RE elements are actually being added to the gameplay style found in RE4 and RE5 rather than completely replacing them. Perhaps this means we can expect a game that blends the best elements of both.

Famitsu provides just a few solid gameplay details. You'll be able to move while your weapon is readied. The game's camera will also be freely adjustable, allowing you to scope out every corner for zombies waiting to attack.

Capcom was willing to get a bit more specific when it comes to story. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, the main characters of the first Resident Evil, are paired together once again. The game kicks off when a group of BSAA agents, including Jill, head out on an investigation mission to a luxury cruise liner that's become a ghost ship out at sea.

The cruise ship seems to be the primary setting for the game, but concept art in the magazine also show a port town and a snow covered mountain. The game takes place in Europe just after the formation of the BSAA group.
resident-evil-revelations-20101208030951602.jpgThis cruise liner looks like it will be the primarily location for Revelations, but the game will also take place in other areas.

Revelations may have been announced first, but it appears to be in a far earlier state. Famitsu lists it as 20% complete.

Both games are listed as release TBA, so we're not sure if the 3DS launch early next year will be accompanied by any form of Resident Evil.

IMHO they are just keeping up with the joneses..
last year it was the dsixl and now they need a new avenue to keep the hype going.
The 3DS doesnt really interest me, the kids have the dsi xl's and the 3ds doesnt really have anything extra other than a pre installed game.
GameStop will be doing trade in deals later in the year.

Didnt know that no, just looked at the box for pre order on the shelf, and wasnt impressed.
Not seen much advertising for it either come to think of it.

The advertising will kick into gear soon. What really sells the 3DS to me is the line up of games. It just looks superb. There's going to be at 20 must have games in the first 6 months of release.

Well don't bother with final fantasy anymore. it's a dinosaur of a series. Atlus is fully supporting the 3DS with new Shin Megami Tensei games including a Persona game. Now that's got me excited!

I'll be waiting for my usual reason to buy a Nintendo console: a new Zelda game :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

It would be great if Nintendo became a little stricter with their quality control for this console. Looking for good games for Nintendos can be like sifting through garbage for a gem. They let anyone release anything they want it seems. You really have to be on the ball and read up about new relseases, obvious mainstays like the Mariosmand Zeldas excluded.

Trailer for Super Monkey Ball 3DS here doesn't look too impressive but don't forget we're not seeing it in 3D so it may be a lot better in person.

Not exactly the most reliable source of information, but amazon France had the 3ds listed as €249.99 earlier today and so did another French website, doubt it means anything but I just thought I'd point it out.

Possible release date for 3DS coming up on Jan 19th here
Nintendo reveals details of Amsterdam gathering, suggesting 3DS plans are soon to be unveiled

Platform holder Nintendo will reveal its launch plans for new handheld the 3DS at a media event in Amsterdam on January 19th, MCV believes.
Invites for the still mysterious gathering have been sent out to the press this morning.
It’s expected that details will include a firm launch date and price for the 3DS, as well as the day one launch line-up.
The machine itself is notable not only for being the first 3D handheld console, but also for the fact that it offers 3D visuals without the need for the user to wear glasses.
Though we don’t yet know what titles will or will not make day one, the list of contenders includes the likes of Kid Icarus, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart, Nintendogs/Cats, PilotWings, Star Fox, Driver, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Carnival Games, Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon.

Nintendo 3DS escapes production line, strikes a pose with Yoshi

No, not that Yoshi, but the real, officially licensed critter with a penchant for chomping Goombas and dropping eggs. Nintendo's 3DS handheld has, according to 3DS Buzz, been stolen from a Chinese manufacturing factory and leaked all over the Internet. This version is a little different than what we saw at E3 and even the "official" version from the September 29th announcement, the Select, Home, and Start buttons having been made flush into the screen bezel. Also, a 1300mAh battery is confirmed, as is 96MB of RAM. We have another picture of it below, showing it's size compared to everything from a Game Boy Micro to a DSi XL, nicely demonstrating that Nintendo's new hotness is a little bit smaller than even a standard DSi. That's progress for ya, folks.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Wasn't expecting to be smaller than the DSi. Once it has WPA2 compatibility I'll be happy.
