You will become a legend if this works out.

I agree!! Was ready to go down to Three this morning and switch back to 02! Will wait a few days...see if this works :) In theory it should make no difference, but hopefully it will! :D

Got the 4 last Friday and nothing but trouble, no network, slow wifi. Even no signal when I was up North at the weekend. Got an old INQmini and that works fine, not all the apps as on the 4 but I will wait for a Android on 3. Also 3 doesnt got Skype packaged on the 4 as they got on other phones so you pay 40 euro a month and Skype goes from your allowance but with my old INQ I just needed to top up 20 a month and got free internet as well. It looks good the 4 but that is it.

So I am cancelling the contract and gonna give the 4 back. Even within the 14 days that looks to be a pain. I already called 3 three times and went to the shop but still they keep saying that I need confirmation from the technical support desk to give it back. So there you go with Customer Protection and the 14 days to cancel your contract. Made another call this morning and after a lot of hassle they finally put a note on my account that I can cancel the contract. Going to the shop after work so lets see...

Hi all, had a similar problem earlier but once I went to the settings and turned on cellular data and roaming data on from the network settings, it's perfect.

    Coincidence?

Working perfectly since I did this.

Yip coincidence - 3's support got me to do this yesterday - made no difference whatsoever still stuck switching to airplane mode

Turned on data roaming but App Store still not working properly. For speeds see my sig! Might have to give this iPhone back. CPW told me 7 days BTW....

My number is porting from O2 to Three at the moment and I have no 3G. Three actually advised me of the issues I would experience during the porting process. Fair enough.

Is there anyone who's moved from another network to 3 for the iPhone offer and is happy? I had considered it but the many horror stories here are making me consider sticking with Vodafone despite the higher cost.

Just off another half hour phone call with the iphone "specialist" support team - allergic at this stage. Tried a whole lot of settings still no joy - drops to 2g and stays there until airplane mode is selected. Going to get a new sim at dinnertime but can't see it making a tad of a difference. Tech support have noted on my a/c that there is a coverage issue if i wanted to cancel. I suggested that they extend the cooling off period to 28 days as it would benefit everyone i.e. the customers can try it for an extra few weeks and the problem may be fixed by then and secondly 3 won't be stuck with a whole load of second hand phones! Have heard nothing back on this......

Took Three a half an hour to arrange the porting from O2. I rebooted the IP4 and my 3G signal is back. I am quite happy with the service so far. Just trying to represent a balanced view, it's not all bad.

Some progress possibly.... did a reset network settings option on the handset. Did the death grip which kills the signal on my handset completely, the 2g network pops up pretty much straightaway after releasing grip. Within about 8/9 minutes the 3g network automatically popped up - this never happened before without going in and out of airplane mode. Just tried it 3 times there and it worked each time although it is taking up to 8/9 minutes for it to switch automatically. It switches to 3g, and comes up with a message "could not activate mobile data network" although i can now browse the net. This message is also new so wonder what there doing in the background. anyone else with the 2g/3g issue want to try this and report back?

Sounds good. Let us know if you end up getting charged extra for data roaming? :pac:

Hey corklad, i reset everything aswell and it seems to be a bit better - 3G does come back after a couple of minutes.

TO THOSE OF YOU ON 3 experiencing this problem, how many of you are using a case on your phone and how many are not - is this an antenna issue?

To all those experiencing 2G/3G issues... I suggest you try this:

    * Reset your network settings. If you have used a backup from a 3G/3GS iPhone to get everything across to your new iPhone 4, then your old operator's settings may have come across too. A reset of the network settings seems to sort this out
    * Update to 4.0.1. Reception seems much better for me, particularly holding onto the 3G signal for longer.
    * If your phone flicks across to 2G, but you know you are in a good 3G signal area, just wait for a few minutes. Mine has gone back to 3G every time after about 5 minutes. No need to switch airplane mode in my opinion.

And just to show what 3's network can do (Bishopstown, Cork):

    Hope these help!

After porting from O2 a few weeks ago, I did a network reset and haven't had any issues since then. Although I do know others who have issues.

For my opinion of the iPhone on 3, check out my blog post if you haven't already.

I'm currently Meteor Pay as you go.

Been dying to get the iPhone 4 on bill pay for months, and gonna get it next week. 3 seem to have the best deal from what i can see. O2 seems pricey but. What would you advise? My current phone barely makes calls so it's goin to be a huge step up :)

...But i'm wondering if im gonna get problems by goin with th cheaper option (3)

Since flicking the data roaming switch, my 3G coverage has been fairly rock solid, and it was terrible before that. Still early days, but if it fixes the problems I was having, I'll be delighted. The thought of going through the return process and waiting for them to come back in stock to o2 was killing me!

I've no case (one ordered from Apple - the bumper) - the issue i'm having with signal etc is not death grip related as i'm holding it in the correct "apple" way - Jobs = tosspot!

Its definitely three/iphone related. Following on from my earlier post in relating to my progress on the 2g/3g issue i can report i've tried it maybe 10 times since and each time 3g is reconnecting automatically after between 5-8 minutes - the only thing that i changed was a network settings reset on the handset. I have been on to tech support numerous times and only since i did a network reset have i had progress. 5-8 minutes to switch between 2 and 3g is not acceptable long term as it should be instantaneous but they are making progress with the issue so we'll give them some credit. It never changed automatically previously whether it was left for 5 minutes or 5 hours

How do you do a network reset?

Hey - i was exactly the same. Very hard to know as i'm only on day 4. I ported my PAYG from meteor across with zero issues and was done in about 30 minutes.

I was all set to return my iphone handset today, however after making some progress i'm going to give it another 7/8 days as i can cancel before day 14. I'd give it a try apart from the issues discussed here 3g coverage for all operators varies throughout the country. The lack of being able to edge on three's network and possibly vodafones is a disadvantage. With 3's network you can only surf on the 3g service. With o2 you can surf quite well on 2g/edge. 3's price plans are superb - for more or less the 40 you pay them per month o2 and vodafones is 60. Give it a try i'd say there is lots of teething problems (not tethering :) )but they will have to sort them all out. They are selling out everywhere and 3 will have a huge amount of new subscribers due to their excellent price plans and remember the 14 day policy works - you ring tech support if they can't solve it you tell them to make a note on your a/c that there is coverage issues - you return the complete package, pay for what you've used and voila you're done. It is pretty much that easy. Now if i did leave i wonder is it possible to port back out of 3 to Meteor :D - i guess it should be straightforward and anyway hopefully won't have to! Just 2 things as well for new iphone users - no smilies in text messages only smilies iphone to iphone, and no sms delivery reports! There are apps you can get for delivery reports but i can confirm as of now the apps will not work on 3 for sms delivery reports. Vodafone i believ has a code you can put in front of the text message and it will come back as delivered but this is not supported by 3.

Another issue (dunno if it's the phone or 3) - after finishing a call the phone is 'dead' for about a minute - the 'slide to unlock' graphic displays but sliding does nothing. Is this just me?!

I don't have this problem anyway - thankfully! Have you rebooted? Yes i work in IT :D

I have a similar internet issue on Three but with an HTC desire. It occurs sometime when switching from 2g (which is Vodafones network) back to Three's 3g. Stuff like maps and some browsing does not repsond. However I can browse to Three's own my3 site.

I can for example bring up the the today page on my3 but if I select Rte news for example it will not go there, effectively all internet outside of Three's own servers is blocked.

To get round this I have to do the airplane on/off mode. It doesn't always happen on switchover between 2g and 3g though. My theory is if you originate a data connection while on 2G then it is reluctant to swap to 3g while trying to do data communication. If you do subsequently get transferred to 3G then the original data session blocks you from going outside the three network. I'ds imagine this is a security issue as the original data connection is a VF one and I don't think the Data handover is as as well defined as it is for roaming calls.

That's the theory anyway according to my experience.

    Hi jimmy,

Yes all of the sounds plausible and it also explains why the 3 engineers want data roaming enabled on all the 3 iphone handsets. At least there aware of it and are surely working on it. Enabling data roaming for me didn't do anything but i've left it on anyway as it can't do any harm - until i'm abroad!! Better remember to switch it off.

Moved from VF and haven't had an ounce of trouble. For the tenner a week it's costing me on bill pay and what I'm getting calls, texts and data wise I've never come across a deal like it.
