By the way, I see this thread has a lot of views, it must be very interesting. ;) I just wanted to say that if anyone else has any questions or is curious about this, really just go right ahead and ask.

I hope the above still applies! Randomly came across this thread and found the pictures at the start fascinating, I was just curious as to why the people actually start to look more feminine around the face when taking the hormones? I'm sorry if this sounds ignorant but I have next to zero knowledge of transgender people and always kinda thought that they would always look a bit 'manly' and that hormones just made you grow breasts etc, but those girls look amazing and really feminine, can hormones really change how you look that much?

Again, sorry, if that sounds ignorant, I'm just genuinely curious!:)

Hormones tend to move 'the soft stuff' and that depends on genetics so for some there is nothing and for most there is a small amount of fat distribution. This more or less just softens things. Bones never move :(

d.anthony, you ask away, so long as your questions aren't about me taking drugs in order to make myself more attractive to partners. Honestly ask away.

Unfortunately it's only a very small percentage that ever reach the femininity you are probably describing the rest of us just get on with life.

No need to apologise, and it's not really ignorant at all.

Yes, hormones can really change how you look that much, but I would put emphasis on 'can' because it does depend on factors like age and genetics too. How it happens, well how your body accumulates weight is down to hormones, so as livlondon pointed out body fat redistributes, but the whole texture of the skin changes as well and pores shrink, so this too makes the face become feminine.

Sorry to interupt the current conversation, but I need some advice.

Ok so I've gone to my doctor, I've told him i'm transsexual, he got me an appointment with Dr Lucey in Dublin, I went to that, lasted about 40 minutes and he told me that I do in fact have "Gender Identity Disorder" (ugh, such a name for it -_- ) and thats all I've done about my situation. I'm a bit lost now as I'm not sure what happens next. Dr Lucey told me that I should get councelling from my local health service, but when i told my doctor, he said it might not be such a good idea because people might not understanding about it, and that I'd be better off getting councelling up the country instead with specialists in this field.

Now, he didn't exactly say he'd arrange anything, so I'm guessing its up to me now. But I don't know what to do. Comming out for me is way off because I can't financially support myself yet, as I'm still living at home with my parents. I'm 20, and I know some people say i'm still young but having lived 20 years in the wrong body, I don't want to spend too much longer in it.

Any suggestions or advice you can give me?

It will be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Rose.

If you can afford it I'd make an appointment with James Kelly....he will explain all and give you good directions.

Otherwise there is some Counsellors around the country who are understanding, can be a good idea if you research who your attending. I know of a good therapist in Athlone and Limerick, available through the medical card. That might not suit you though? Otherwise try to get to a support group? If you cannot come out to your parents, and if you are living at home, then it probably isn't a good idea to start treatment just yet. Treatment will start to work quite quickly - I'm a year in, and I now look quite different to how I looked a year ago. And, you are half my age - treatment will probably work quicker and more profoundly for you. This isn't something you can necessarily easily hide from those close to you - so if you cannot come out to them, and are dependent on them, it's hard to see how you can start treatment.

I would suggest working towards changing your situation - either fix whatever it is that's stopping you from coming out at home, or move out.

Dr. Lucey diagnosed you, so your future treatment path is now his responsibility. If you are left with any questions as to what his thoughts are in regard of your future treatment, then I would suggest getting back in touch with him and getting clarity from him.

    Good luck!

You need to see Kelly, get your set amount of dates with him.

Then eventually your GP or Dr. Lucey can refer you to loughlinstown.
If you don't plan to get hormones straight away I would still go and get the appointment, it wil take a long time to even get the appointment and you more than likely won't get any prescription on the first visit.

And I do know someone who went on hormones for years at home and her parents didn't cop but that said I'm not recommending it.

Try take it one step at a time.

First step - you need a counsellor / psychologist on board.
I really recommend just trying to see Dr. Kelly. It's not cheap but what I did was save up and he may also organise some sort of cheaper rate or payment plan with you if you need it.

When you've seen enough of Kelly (think it's at a very minimum 4 times he likes to see people before moving them forward) then think about Loughlinstown etc.

IF hormones are for you start looking at that process and start thinking about coming out.

Take it as it comes, don't go rushing ahead now.

Please use this thread to post or discuss transition pictures only not to ask questions or advice
For advice go to this thread -
For questions about trans people/issues etc go to this thread

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Carl this is the thread for your 'questions' and comments.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056091577

This thread is supposed to be discussing and sharing transition videos, pictures etc. The intent is for this thread to be positive. I suggest further debate be taken to that thread so as to not derail this further.

    On topic:

Links234, they certainly responded quickly to HRT. Interesting stuff.

They always give me hope :)

I think it might have taken me a lot longer to come to terms with myself if it wasn't for pictures like these. gave me enough strength to say "Yes! I CAN do it!"

For me the best thing about these pictures isn't the change in features, it's the change in expression. You can see how much happier people are the further into the treatment they are. It must be an amazing feeling to look at old pictures and then look in the mirror and see your real self looking back at you.

you are very right, the happiness they show is amazing and very inspiring. I feel happier today than I have done in a long time, and I'm sure it's only going to get better. :)

I just can't say any more than that...

(Seriously! I tried to put in more smilies, but the boards software came back to me and said "you can only have 15 images in your post"! LOL!).
