+1, check your internal storage. If mine is below 10%, I can't update or install apps, and my google account won't sync!

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

Don't think its that lads as other apps update and install fine just not these two buggers!! They are there hanging around for weeks\months now. I removed Facebook completely and reinstalled thinking that would solve it but no joy. I think with Handcent I am actually missing out on the genuine updates as its stuck in this state....

    Cheers,

Handcent is massive compared to most apps so maybe thats why other ones are fine. Open "Settings > SD & Phone storage" and see how much space you have internally. If you have Froyo and are running low on space then move as many apps as you can to the SD card.

Moved as many as I could to SD, now about 30MB free on phone, they are still there in the list though once I go into the Market?

I wish I could move more Apps to the SD card. Using a Nexus On here by the way....

The storage issue is a pain. Not many apps allow you to move them to SD storage! So frustrating.

Try uninstalling Handcent, reboot your phone, then re-install in

HTC Desire and I am constantly uninstalling stuff before installing. Is there any way around this? Does contacts etc eat into your internal memory? I have twitter installed with contacts of loads of people I follow. I don't need their details in my contacts, just available online - can I run the twitter app without having the contacts in the phone?

Same with Skype since I installed it, showing every contact and I only want to see my Skype contacts in the list! There does not seem to be a setting to show only online contacts which would be well handy!

I'm using the Desire as well and my Twitter app is installed on the SD card.

Lads, all sorted now! Once I freed up some memory they both installed (Handcent and Facebook!! Was as easy as that!

    Does that include the contacts?

I'm pretty sure that when you install it you are given the option of just showing your Skype contacts only. That's what I picked anyway.

If you press the menu button while showing the contacts then choose groups you can then select to only show your online contacts etc.

I found cache cleaner app to be a great way of freeing up internal memory. Usually run it every night when turning off wi-fi and it removes up to 4 or 5 mb. It only takes less than 5 seconds to run.

Perfect! Thanx man! On a side note anyone noticed the battery draining quicker since they installed Skype? Mine is in standby most of the time here at work and on WiFi and not received many Skype calls but battery seems to not last as long as it did before....

TalkMyPhone -- sends notifications, like SMS messages, to your Google Talk (or Jabber) account. Can also send commands back.
    Available commands:
    - "reply:#message#": send a sms to your last recipient with content message.
    - "sms:#contact#[:#message#]": sends a sms to number with content message or display last sent sms.
    - "contact:#contact#": display informations of a searched contact.
    - "where": sends you google map updates about the location of the phone until you send "stop"
    - "ring": rings the phone until you send "stop"
    - "copy:#text#": copy text to clipboard
and you can paste links and open it with the appropriate app

    Very handy. And cool.

Which cache cleaner are you using?

Probably been addressed already, but is there any free alternative to SlideIt / Swype?

My demo ran up on SlideIt, and the beta is closed for Swype. Might just purchase SlideIt if not.

how the f do you get it to work correctly?

got it to send 1 sms, but won't work after that.

EDIT: Never mind, got the contacts bit sorted.

Still seems rather hit and miss in terms of actually working.

What contacts does it use? I tried sending an sms to myself and it wouldn't send, said the contact didn't exist. It exists on the phone, and I have imported my contacts to GMail too, and it doesn't find it.

Any ideas how I am to sync up contacts for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

It just reads the contacts from the phone, afaik.

"sms:john:this is my message" will send an sms to john. If you have lots of johns you might have to specify. "sms:john smith:message". If someone sends you a text and it pops up in GChat, you can just use "reply:my message".

Just works for me, didn't have to sync anything.

Don't know any free alternatives. My Swype expired but I 'acquired' one from the net in the meantime which is still working.

Tbh I'll gladly pay €5 for it when it's released but in the meantime I couldn't face the stock keyboard, I've gotten really used to one handed texting with Swype. :D

Mini Squadron is totally worth the money. So addictive.

I've read all 54 pages of this thread now and have downloaded a lot of the apps! But what I'd like to know as a new Android owner is what is the best internet browser to try and what is the best camera app (I don't like the software that came with the Desire)?

    Thanks!

I'm trying XScope 6 and it seems quite good!

There's a fair case to be made for the stock browser too, imo. I'm using the free 'trial' version of XScope at the moment. I like it but not entirely convinced it's worth paying for when the stock browser is perfectly capable and decent.

Dolphin browser is popular too but I found it a bit bulky.

I prefer the stock browser. Firefox beta is available now... might be worth a try.

Firefox beta is not getting very good reviews at this stage, mainly because of its size but it does appear to have other issues also.

To be honest, i find the stock browser as good as any.

I've tried Opera, Dolphin, Fennec... stock HTC is the best IMHO.
