After getting frustrated with the amount of free space available on the desire I installed a newer build of OpenDesire and was a little dismayed to see 40 megs free on the phone. Then installed Modaco, and foud that I had approximately the same amount free. I backed up my SD card, partitioned it with an EXT partition and swap file, restored the backed up content and was delighted to see 100megs free on the phone (down to around 80 megs free now, with all of my former apps installed).

I generally get 140 free with a full wipe, format ext, dalvik cache etc

Some may have auto installed to SD without prompting. Go to Menu/Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and tap the On SD Card tab to check. Then go to the Downloaded tab and tap on each app in turn, some may have an option to Move to SD Card.
Angry Birds was the only app installed on my SD card. After freeing up quite a bit more space by transferring 6/7 other apps over.

33MB free, will have to make do with it for now.

Would it be possible to even simplify the above 2 ways of getting extra space on the phone to someone like myself?

A good old fashioned format and reinstall worked for me. I had a problem recently and had to reset to factory defaults. Before doing that I had 14Mb free. Now with all my apps back (and more) I've got 65Mb free.

    I'll do my best.

First things first, you need to be rooted. There are plenty of guides out there pertaining to this. If you have a new desire thats running stock 2.2, you will need to downgrade to 2.1 in order to root. If you go to the android development pages within the HTC Desire Section of XDA Developers you will find a guide to do this.

Ok so assuming you are rooted, down load ROM Manager to your phone. Now back up all of the contents of your SD card to your computer. Just basically copy everything on the SD card and paste it to a folder of your choice on your PC. Now open Rom Manager and click the option to Partition the SD Card. This will completely format the card (hence backing up the contents) and create an Extension on it in order to enable apps2sd. Apps will be stored on this extension. Next you will need to download a custom ROM, your choice, and transfer it to the root of your SD Card (i.e. not within a folder). Enter the recovery console, do 1. a factory wipe and 2. wipe cache. (if you want to keep your apps, you will need to back them up with Titanium back up before entering the recovery console and performing a wipe). Also, in the recovery console, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache and battery stats, then into partitions menu and format SD ext. Now flash the Rom and you should have 140mbs of free space on your phone, depending on which ROM you use.

Don't forget to calibrate the battery after flashing a ROM. I hope this is not all over the place.

I had it working on my desire. Have you tried and failed or just haven't tried yet?

Not tried it yet as Nexus One is not rooted. I should just go ahead and root but I think when you do you can't apply the official Nexus One updates from Google straight away.....I think you have to wait for them to bake a new ROM built on the latest firmware....am I right??

Seems there's a new Gmail app update with a few new features, for rooted and 2.2 only though:

I don't think you can get the updates OTA but they're on the net in a matter of minutes anyway.

After looking everywhere for an interactive map of tokyo underground specifically (Without success) I finally found aMetro which lets you download maps of most major metro systems.

You can use it to search for stations, routes and lines. Pretty sweet. Available free on Marketplace.

Works OK on unrooted Desire running Froyo

There is no way that someone could explain this is in basic language is there? Have a rooted (by a mate) Desire 2.2, haven't the faintest about putting a new ROM etc on it, just want the basic basic need of freeing up more space on my phones memory. Lots of assumptions on knowledge base in most explanations you read which i suppose is frustrating for people on all sides. "to the root of the card", "Titanium"???

The root of the card means put the file on the first directory of the card which in simpler terms means don't put the file in a folder. If you connect your phone to your computer, the SD card will be assigned a drive letter. If you double click on this drive letter, the files and folders you see in front of you are all on the root of the card. From there, if you go into any of the folders, you are then in the root of that folder. So 'the root of' is the top most level of any directory hierarchy.

Titanium is an app which you can download from Market, it will backup the entire contents of your phone to your sd card, so that if you wipe the phone to install a new rom, you can restore apps and settings to the way they were before the wipe.

The easiest way to install a new rom once you are rooted is to download an app called Rom Manager from Market. This will allow you to backup your existing rom and download new ones without having to worry about where they go on the card and all that stuff. Have a look at it, if you need more help or have more questions, feel free to ask but you're probably better off opening a new thread rather than taking this one off topic.

So, my swype app has now expired. Apparently the apk I had was from a beta testing phase. How can I get a new apk.

This was one of my favourite android apps, I need my swype back!

    Is SlideIt not fairly similar?

SlideIT is similar but just not quite as good. No punctuation marks on the main keyboard for example.

I installed it today but may refund it

I found reference on google to a newer version with the mic button for google voice recognition, haven't found the apk for that yet.

Haven't seen it posted on here but Fruit Ninja has been ported to Android (big hit on iPhone). It's a great game, extremely polished graphics and sound and addictive as ****. Probably the best game I've seen on Android to date.

Also Flick Kick, another iPhone hit, has been released for Android and is well worth the $1
