hi guys, interested in this phone but just reading that the sprint hero is out in the states and it addresses some of the issues the original has (camera, lag, etc) - also it looks a little different with no "chin". does anyone know if it would work over here?
Sprint has a CDMA network so nope.
+ its really the exact same as the update that was released for the standard hero.
IMO it looks worse without the chin

    lol......thanks "chin"!!

so the newest update fixes which issues?

also where did you guys buy your heroes?

Doesn't really make a big deal, it's the same phone with a CDMA radio unit instead of a GSM/3GSM unit.

The update fixes the lag which unfortunately the phone is slated for in early reviews. All fixed now: http://phandroid.com/2009/08/19/upcoming-htc-hero-update-removes-lag-video/

thanks plazzTT - really like the look of this now. only thing holding me back is the fact that I have a nokia 5800 and 2-3 days of battery life!

I hear it addresses the laggyness of the ui, some battery improvements and the autorotate in the browser is much smoother. It also seems that using a class 6 microsd helps as it puts it's cache on the sd.

Got mine off eBay for about 100 less than Expansys

i know! would i even get 2 days out of the battery?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭rizzee

On the Hero? If you don't use it much then yeah! But if your going to listen to music, wifi etc, expect a day at the most I reckon! Sure just charge it everynight or get two batteries and you'll be fine. Thats what i'm hoping when I get mine :)

    2 batteries - good point!!

anyone have a sat nav appl running on this??

also does the update help with the camera at all?

I have CoPilot which works very well. I have it plugged into the lighter in the car, so I have no idea of its battery consumption.

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

    thanks mr e

where did you source that from?

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,452 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

From the Android market. I haven't used it much, but it's been useful on a few occasions when I'm trying to find a particular location.

FYI, paid apps (ones which cost money) aren't available from within Ireland unless you root your phone. That might change in time when operators here start stocking more Android phones.

thanks mate - really appreciate the help

so was copilot a free app?

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,452 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Nope, thats why I mentioned the rooting requirement.

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

sorry about all the quessies now but is it a difficult operation to root the phone?

Someone who's done it might have a better answer, but looks alright from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neE5zA687hE

    Are you serious?

As you already know Meteor are getting it in. Are you on bill or PAYG? Would you like to buy it sim free? Expansys is a good site. Lots of options here

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

im billpay with vodafone if that makes any difference so am looking for this sim free!

    expansys seems a bit steep

    Starting at €99 bill pay
    €399 pay as you go
    €387 sim free online

would you like me to choose a colour for you?

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

    yes please DO :)

can you tell me where you are getting those prices from

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭rizzee

    Mate will yah look around?!

Meteor bill from 99euro and PAYG 399

    From the meteor site -

''QUOTE (Glynn from Meteor @ Oct 27 2009, 02:15 PM)
    Hi all,

As regards pricing we don't have any definite pricing that we can give you. Anything I were to say on this could change and I don't want to be giving out false info. As regards colurs the Hero will initially be available in white and other colours may at a later date be available.

The HTC Hero is scheduled to be rolled out to all stores on the 1st but with it being a Sunday it may be the 2nd before some stores have stock. These will be on a first come first serve basis but we should have adequate stock to satisfy demand.

As soon as I hear more on any of the above I will let you know but I have to make sure the information I give is accurate before I can put it on a public forum such as this.

    Hope this helps
    Glynn''

So Meteor will have it only in white.

I prefer the graphite one, but according to HTC, the white phone is the only colour of the phone which has a protective coating layer of polytetrafluoroethylene to keep it looking new and clean. Whatever that is.

Comparison of white and graphite: http://www.thebestdigital.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/htc-hero-black-white.jpg
