So is this definitely on next Saturday guys? Admittedly, I stopped following wrestling soon after the whole Invasion storyline, but Bret Hart was probably my biggest hero growing up, and one of the things I have on a list of things to do before I die is to thank a childhood hero for the fond memories, so Id love to meet Bret, even if only for a minute to get the book signed. The man was pretty much God to me as a child.

Good luck then. As i said earlier, he's one of the easier approachable ones, so it'll be a task you can chalk off the list. :)

Indeed, I couldnt belive it when he asked me a question  Got a good chat with him about the book. He may have been just looking for feedback, but anything I asked to be signed, he happily did and I had alot. Real easy to talk to. I remember seen him outside the hotel in Wexford when the bus pulled up, He had a cap on and I said to the gf ''I think thats Bret Hart'' Then when I realised it was him I kinda frooze up and just gave out a big Dub accent ''HOW YA!!'' and gave him a thumbs up with a big happy smilly head and MR T haircut from the holloween party the night before on me :o

What on earth do you ask your childhood hero though!? I absolutely know Ill freeze, no matter how welcoming Bret is.

    Bret: "Hey how are you?"
    Me: "Durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

I just asked him how the tour was going. He responded with "Well, it's a hell of a lot easier than being slammed", He asked me if i'd read the book, most likely looking for feedback, but i'd only started it, so was honest about it. Shook hands, photo, bada bing bada boom bada bang.

I'm two chapters away from the end of his book and I don't really want it to end. It's great hearing his thoughts on guys like The Rock, Austin, Foley etc.

I will definitely be goin to this!
I remember meeting mick foley in easons a few years back and I completely froze when he started talking to me about the book,my mate who was with me said it was hilarious to watch,I just mumbled sumtin, pointed to my camera and retardidly said 'picture' apparently!
I also remember meeting cena and torrie wilson in hmv ages ago though and i was completely non plussed by both of them, there was teenage girls crying and **** and I didn't get what all the fuss was about,I guess he was their Mick Foley haha!
In fairness to cena and torrie they were really friendly and chatty but I just wasn't a big fan of either!

Anybody have a rough idea of what time to start q'ing at to get a good position?
For foley I was there at about 10am and I was number 125 in the line!

I was going to ask the same thing. I was thinking of being there for 10am or earlier. Is that good time?
Oh and I have a ticket from "Back in the Ring" 1995 (Bret fought Hakushi). Will Bret sign it or is it strictly books?

I was in Easons (Belfast) today, where Bret's due to do a signing friday. They've a bunch of instructions as to what will happen at the signing printed up now. One of these is that, Bret will only be signing copies of the book purchased in store.

That said, judging by what SR and the guys have said, IF there is time (i wouldn't count on it), I'm sure he'll sign a second item, but you must purchase the book.

I'll throw my opinion in on meeting him- He was one of the nicest wrestlers I've ever met. Very accommodating and easy-going.

My one and only experience of an Easons signing was a disaster. So from what i've read, Easons' staff may try to accommodate something else, but as i've already said before, his agent really is a pushy sh*t. Unless he ends up using someone else.

So don't bother bringing expensive replica belts unless you have a book handy folks.

to those with any questions about the signing...heres some answers straight from bret!

I see that some of Bret's appearances are listed as book signings and some as autograph sessions. What's the difference?
    BOOK SIGNING

Bret's book is available for purchase at book signings. Anyone who purchases a book at a book signing can meet Bret and have their book autographed. (See below for exception). There is no additional charge for having your book autographed.

In order to assure that everyone who buys a book gets to meet Bret and have their book signed Bret does not sign anything but books at book signings - until the book signing is over. In other words, IF Bret has finished signing books for everyone on the line BEFORE the time that the book signing is scheduled to be over, he MAY then sign memorabilia that fans have brought along. It will be announced before the book signing starts if Bret will sign memorabilia at the end - IF he gets through the book signing line and time permits. So.... if you bring memorabilia to a book signing please be aware that you may not be able to get it signed. The procedure is; wait on line - which is fun because you get to meet a lot of other Bret Hitman Hart fans! - meet Bret and have your book autographed, and then, if you have memorabilia, get back on the end of the line. IF Bret can work his way to the end of the line before the scheduled end of the signing he'll sign your memorabilia, if nothing is preventing him from doing so.

Everyone on the line at a book signing will be asked to follow certain guidelines in order to make the line move as quickly as possible. The line moving faster does NOT mean you will spend less time with Bret when you make it to the front and get to the signing table where Bret is seated. The line moving faster only means that more people will get to meet Bret and that there is a greater chance he'll be able to sign memorabilia for those who choose to get back on the end of the line.

The people at the venue should ask everyone on the line to do the following things when it comes to preparing your book to be signed. If they don't ask you - please do it anyway. And, please tell everyone around you on the line to do it too. Tell them you read it on Bret's web site. You'll be helping as many fans as possible to meet Bret that day so thanks from Bret and thanks from them. :-)

    1. Use the book jacket flap to flap your book(s) open to the title page.

    2. Either bring a stickie "Post It" note or you will be provided with one (for each book). On the stickie note please write only the name or names that you would like your book personalized to. Please do NOT write sayings, slogans or essays on the stickie note, only the name or names you want Bret to personalize your book to. Place the stickie note on the book flap that is holding the title page open.

    3. Hand Bret your book open to the title page.

    4. If you have more than one copy of the book, put a stickie with names in each and stack the OPEN books on top of each other. Put the open stack on the table in front of Bret - maximum 5 to a stack. 10 copies per person.

    5. If you want to have more than 10 books signed, email macyengelstein@aol.com to make special arrangements in advance. Clearly state your name and contact info and what signing(s) you'll be attending.

    6. You CAN have a photo taken with Bret at MOST book signings (see exception below). At no time is anyone allowed behind the table at which Bret is sitting in order to pose for a photo with Bret. Any unauthorized person behind the table is subject to being escorted from the premises. You are welcome to shake Bret's hand across the table. At most signings there are one or two people on hand whose sole responsibility it is to take photos. You will see them up front. Hand them your camera or cell phone and they will take a picture of you and Bret and then give your camera or cell phone back to you. Therefore, we suggest you bring a camera or cell that will be simple for the 'photographer' to use, with no advance training on the device. We try to use "photographers" who are good with gadgets.

If you wish to volunteer to be a "photographer" at any signing or autograph session listed here at brethart.com please email marcyengelstein@aol.com and include your name and contact info, including phone, along with what events you plan to attend. Please note, this is NOT an easy job. Things are moving very fast. You have to be able to snap once in a lifetime photos for people with devices you have never used before - and you only have one shot to do it.

Sometimes stuff happens. Sometimes we're not able to do things exactly as described here and we'll wing it.

    * If, before the book signing begins, it is obvious that there are too many people on the line to meet Bret within the scheduled length of the signing, it will be up to the discretion of Bret and his management if he can sign for extra time. Sometimes this is simply impossible due to scheduling concerns - such as travel and flight schedules, live interviews, etc. If the line is so long at the beginning that not everyone is guaranteed to meet Bret, an announcement will be made. We do everything we can to avoid this scenario and Bret takes it very seriously to try to meet as many fans as possible who came out to see him.

** The signing table is often elevated on a platform. To request handicapped access please email marcyengelstein@aol.com in advance. Please clearly state your name and contact information, including phone, along with what signing(s) you plan to attend.

*** If you already have a copy of Bret's book that you'd like signed you CAN have it signed BUT there may be different guidelines or a possible minimal charge for this, depending on the venue. Check event descriptions in the appearances area.

    AUTOGRAPH SESSIONS

At an autograph session Bret will sign copies of his book and memorabilia you bring with you as well as publicity photos that will be available for sale at the venue. Rules vary somewhat at different autograph sessions depending on the venue and the promoter we're working with for each event. Please go by the guidelines for having a book signed (above) - flapping it open, stickies, etc. You CAN be photographed with Bret at an autograph session - sometimes over the table (as above) and sometimes without the table. This varies from session to session. The cost varies from session to session too. Check the appearances area for info about each autograph session.

ill be going next sat hopefully, and this time ill have more to say to him than i did last nov, i met him and could not think of anything to say! he said thanks for comin to see him and smiled like a little child! seemed genuine!

Can anyone answer if having the receipt for your book is a major sticking point? Will i have to buy the book again on saturday to get one signed?

I'm so tempted to bring Shawns book, open it to a blank page then reveal what it is after he signs it and scoot off before Bret starts smashing up Easons :D

It certainly was. Martha Hart (Owen's widow) sued Diana for a reported $19million in slander and liabel charges and the book was pulled from every market.

It's listed on brethart.com when you click on the Dublin, Ireland link.

It just says Easons at noon. Most likely it'll be the one on O'Connell St, I don't think they ever do signings in Easons elsewhere.

Read Brets book last week. The first half is very good, but once it gets in to him falling out with Shawn it's just one long bitter rant until the stroke.

He also seems oddly proud of cheating on his wife so much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,599 ✭✭✭✭ShawnRaven

I thought the same, I thought he was a little hard on Martha, given the fact that she suffered equally if not moreso as far as far as an emotional loss goes.
He also seems oddly proud of cheating on his wife so much.

Proud? Nah, but he definitely found a way to justify it. Of course, we're talking about a guy who now lives alone with his dog for company, so what went around, came back around to him in that sense.

I did find it ironic that Bret slates Flair for being a guy who did the same routine in every match when Bret was guilty of the exact same thing a lot of the time, I know every wrestler has a routine but Bret did it as much as the next guy so it seems like a pointless criticism

Flair did do it more often for most of his career, but i gotta agree with you. Most of Bret's match basics were pretty much the same from 1991-1996.

Flair was also the better heel as he was more hated. Much as i respect Bret for his career achievements and enjoyed his book. He's also a guy that believes too much in his own hype.

Oh definitely, he comes across as very self worshipping throughout his book and dvd, and the Canadian hero thing just got out of hand, whereas Shawn has gone on record saying he was a dick for most of his early career and during his title runs in the 90s, but compare the Shawn of 97 to the Shawn of today, whereas Bret has constantly played the whiny innocence card since day 1 of the screwjob, it was actually the first chapter of the book I read just to see his take on it

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,599 ✭✭✭✭ShawnRaven

Again, i don't want Montreal to be the focal point of this thread.

But here's the bit that i think is somewhat tragic. Especially the way people bounced back and forth to WWE and WCW from 97-99. Had Bret just willingly dropped the belt on the night, Monteal wouldn't have happened, the whole thing probably would have ended on a handshake between Bret and Vince, and Bret may very well could have been back in WWE by the time December 99 rolled around and Bret's career got cut short. As Ted DiBiase had put it. "It really doesn't matter where you drop the belt, especially if it's being televised live and the whole world is going to see it anyway"

It could have been so easily avoided. Not saying it would have resolved the Bret/Shawn situation, it wouldn't. But looking at it from Vince's perspective. Shawn got injured three months after the 1997 Survivor Series and was benched for five years shortly afterwards. Vince could have asked Bret to return afterwards, and if Bret really wanted to finish his career with the WWE like he claims, he could have returned.

Of course, this is just me throwing up one of a few theories. But rather than trying a whole Bret/Shawn Montreal argument which has been done to death, I'm just saying it could have easily been avoided. Vince has said that he wished things could have been done differently, Bret has said it was down to a lack of communication between he and Vince at the time. To me, essentially tells me that they both now understand that it all could have easily avoided, but hindsight is 20/20.

Having read both books I'd say Bret was a lot more honest about his faults than Shawn was.

I didn't feel Bret was that bitter against Shawn in the book. It seems there was a definite breakdown in communication between the two and you do get he sense, and I think Bret makes the point as well, that Vince was quite happy to let there be tension within his roster rather than call the two of them together and sort out their issues.

What I found strange was that Bret makes a lot of comments about certain wrestlers being assholes like Hall not giving a kid an autograph, Warrior leaving a terminally ill kid and his parents waiting etc., yet he had no real qualms in hanging out with Dynamite who he acknowledges was a real dick most of the time he knew him. (Eg. spitting in a homeless guy's face? WTF?)

SR, the Montreal thing would have been avoided if Shawn hadn't been a dick and told Bret he wasn't prepared to put him over. If I was in Bret's shoes I wouldn't put over someone that ungrateful and disrespectful either.
