Ubuntu 7.10 installed in about 20 minutes its desktopish size ... its pretty quiet as well :) but then these is just the onboard graphics. It does seem to weigh quite a bit but then the heatsink is a brick :)

Haven't tried windows might try putting XP onto it to test if it works :) though I think you need to create a bootable xp sp2 cd via the slipstream method ...

Don't have vista so I won't be testing any flavour of that.

How does the PSU look? Any non-standard connections to the motherboard?

Er ... you're gonna need a soundcard as well I think. You'll also want to check out how to mod this puppy to handle another graphics card I think ...

Don't have a spare graphics card lying around at the moment so I can't test it :(

Hurrah.. rang Dell this afternoon about the order of my server which disappeared.

Was talking to a sound bloke who said he could find no record of it. He said it's partly due to our company have 4 seperate accounts (our address can be quoted one of numerous ways depending on who orders from them).

But said if i forwarded the e-mail quoting the spec and price (my Internet Acknowledgement e-mail), he'd put the order through again. And lo-and-behold, i've just gotten an e-mail with a booking reference and an estimated delivery date of 18th December - all for €188!

    Chuffed!

PS - if only they could get my Vostro out to me before Christmas now! But like i said, that would take quite a miracle i'd imagine.

No onboard audio nope, but you can get a 4.1 PCI card from Komplett for something like €8

As far as the video options go, as I understand it it should be a matter of installing it into the X4 slot, no? It'll run at a reduced speed but still be good enough for most games (depending on the card).

there seems to be weird stuff happening in dell.Heres my story

ordered server thursday night recieved order acknwledgement for server A we will call it within a few minutes.
checked status all weekend nothing happening.
I rang dell monday and was told for some reason that server A wasnt processed I was told that to just order another one and server A would not be processed.
So i went and ordered another server which we will call server B.
This evening then recieved an email saying that server B was being shipped from lady by the name of nicola roche.bout half an hour later recieved an email from her again saying to ring her tomorrow as my cc wasnt right.but this was in relation to server A which was supposed to be cancelled.

It is good i took a good look at the invoice numbers otherwise would ring tomorrow and give her cc details and end up getting 2 instead of 1.
Unless i ring tomorrow and play dumb and when i recieve both ring them and go mad.Would it work .They might leave me keep both to save the hassle.:D

€12 postage for a €8 soundcard is bit of a joke isnt it....

Any Idea how much slower x4 will run against the normal x16,30% performance loss?

Wouldnt really matter with that ****e card I picked anyway :D

    Basic soundcard here for €6

are you in the UK or the north ??? as I thought play won't ship electronics to ireland ?

The x4 will be about at 25% of the full value ... but a lot would depend on the graphics card ... and the motherboard and connectors I'd assume ...
    PCI Express 1x 250 [500]* MB/s
    PCI Express 2x 500 [1000]* MB/s
    PCI Express 4x 1000 [2000]* MB/s
    PCI Express 8x 2000 [4000]* MB/s
    PCI Express 16x 4000 [8000]* MB/s

Firstly a big thanks to kaizersoze for originally posting and then to bazual for the EPP code 123-SC44402

ok ... here's the information I've collected from the thread ...

More Memory - http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/listparts.aspx?model=PowerEdge%20SC440 €54 for 2 gbs ... shipping = 7 quid so ... €61 odd eur to bring your machine up to 3gbs (Link thanks to me earlier in the thread :P )

Dell SC440 and a Different Video Card - http://www.davtar.org/blog/?p=24 it discusses using other graphics cards. They seem to talk about the 7300 GS but bung it into the 4x slot as the 8x won't work apparantly ??? :( not proven by me but from reading the threads the 8x will only show up as 1x :( (link thanks to zod earlier in the thread)

    Board Spec - http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe440sc/en/HOM/HTML/jumpers.htm#wp1055448
(link thanks to Kaiser2000 earlier in the thread)

More information can be found here http://www.poweredgeforums.com/showthread.php?t=3213&page=1&pp=30 (link I'm not sure where I got this I think it was on the thread can't find the person)

To install XP SP2 it looks like you're going to have to slipstream the install it also looks like you'll have to install the 2003 Server Drivers afterwards to get it all working ( some strange driver issue with upgrading from XP to SP2)
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

It looks like I'm going to get the 2gb extra (just ordering now)
It also looks like I'm going to get a 7300 and bung it into the 4x slot

I'm posting it all here again as I'm looking into what to buy at the moment and what my options are for video and sound I'd like to get best bang for buck .. gaming is not really in my mind with this machine but having dual monitor support is so the 7300 would be idea.

Overclockers have a lovely sound card for €26

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-040-CL&tool=3

8400gs looks good....7300gs is kinda expensive,if the 7300 series works then theres no reason a 8400gs wouldnt work imo...

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-073-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1010

7600gt is best bang for buck

Actually.. i realised why i can't see my Order Status online. From the Order Acknowledgment e-mail with PDF attached:
    What's Next?

We will email your Order Confirmation shortly - please retain this document for your records.
This Order Confirmation will include your Order Number and Customer Number.
With these numbers you can check the progress of your order at anytime by using our web site:
    http://www.dell.ie/status
So waiting for that now.. if i don't get it by tomorrow afternoon, i'm ringing again as the deal's over on Friday, right?

PS - the €188 has been reserved on my card though!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭jahalpin

Has the Dell system gone crazy? My system has been shipped and when I looked at MyFInancials it is saying that there is still a balance of 188. I checked with my bank and there is no problem with the card used.

Would they normally ship a system without getting paid first?

    The service has gone downhill a lot and this is on the Irish side, recieved an internal e-mail from them discussing a query I sent in the other day and it was basically;

Customer care: Please check out the following Internet receipt number
Irish relations department: Don't deal with server queries

Other person in Irish relations department:
Reason: Bogus Order/Request :: Poweredge SC440 margin issue

    Same again not our order

Somewhat similar thing with the Vostro i ordered. They reserved the money on my card when they sent me the Order Confirmation for it. But they refunded the money when they sent me the e-mail with the revised delivery date.

Seems quite odd to be honest alright.

What price discrepancy? It *clearly stated* on the order page this was a special offer as this server was about to go end of line, and that there was only 1000 available.

I think you should force their hand on this one. You bought that server fair and square, this isn't a case of mis-pricing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,594 ✭✭✭forbairt

potentially it was to do with the use of the EPP ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

I haven't seen mine yet as it is at my parents house, but I got my ol' man to open it & check it he & says that it has a DVD-ROM (I actually thought they only came with CD-ROMS?) which is good if you want to install Vista. He also said that it has a Pentium D sticker on it so my hopes for a Xeon are official dashed. I'm going there this weekend so I'll bring it back home and fire it up on Sunday.

Btw, from what I've read online the onboard graphics card is a crap 2D/16MB ATI ES1000. So it looks like a graphics card is a must. Any news yet on which one would be the most suitable for this machine???

Also, from what I read on the PowerEdgeForums this system has a 2.5GB memory cap on it, so people who are going to buy an extra 2GB of RAM be aware of this and check it out more thoroughly for yourself (coz it could be BS!).

Same thing happened to me. I rang Dell Sales and she could only discount it to the level of the original link (€250?). The EPP link gets it down to €188.

The Sales Rep advised me to order online again if I could so I just went online straight away and ordered again (yesterday), and in less than an hour, I got a booking reference, followed by an order confirmation 25 mins later.

No idea why ordering again makes any difference. And it's strange that some people are getting their orders, and some aren't. Something to do with the EPP link???
