Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think those are fairly outdated terms though, adverts has long moved from a community sales site (and I bought and sold an enormous amount of stuff on the for sale section of boards back in the day, it was a fantastic resource) to a driven commercial venture. If they forced all commercial sellers to commit to the shop format, they'd lose a massive amount of revenue and drive people towards the like of donedeal and they know that.

I've often suggested that certain forums should have a community sales section that functions very similar to the airsoft sales forum, in that it's a buy and sell forum based on non-profit and community spirit, but this would eat into adverts income so would be a no-go I would imagine. It's only potential legal issues that keep the airsoft sales forum where it is.

Adverts is totally separate from boards nowadays, there is nothing to stop boards forums setting up buy and sell sections apart from mods not having the experience to run them well. There are are plenty of examples where it works here right now, and I'm glad you cited Airsoft adverts as that took a lot of work to get right.

Wanted to avail of their support but they closed their first support forum on boards and then the second and now support is just a mail address with zero transparency.
I suppose you're just supposed to buy stuff and shut up.

I queried a seller with thousands of ads was actually a shop, (and I wanted to filter them out) and was told they weren't commercial. Even though all the stuff they were selling was new.

So I don't think they are interested. So theres no point in reporting anything for any reasaon.

Its laughable how you still cant search multiple areas at once.

I've emailed this to them a few times, each time they fobbed me off saying the dev team are looking into it.

Judging by the urls in the browser when you select a county they've developed themselves into a corner and have said **** it.

Either that, or the more likely scenario. Ad Revenue

Forcing people to goto a new page to search a new area gived them more ad impressions per typical user session.

Suppose its built to make money, not be user friendly.

Another annoyance is people requesting something but not only not bothering to log back in for days afterwards but also not bothering switching on notifications.

So you accept the offer, wait days for a reply (with the stuff lying around that you want to get rid of - the reason you put the f&cking thing up in the first place), eventually cancel the acceptance after a few in-vain messages and give it to next person in line before original person finally decides to log in, loses the plot with you and threatens to/gives you spiteful feedback.

This actually happens for free stuff you're giving away as well.

Thing that really annoys me is the absolute rubbish people put in the free section and then to my surprise the amount of requests they get for the items and will to travel for eg 40 minutes for a
    Cup

He could have just sold a lot of items, accepting the first offers that came along.

what do you all do in a scenario where a potential buyer has more positive than negative, but still a noticable chunk of negative feedback? just go with the gut? no deal?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

I don't bother if its a lot of negative feedback. I'd say more than 5-10% A little bit is ok. As theres always people will negative feedback for unreasonable reasons, or sometimes things happen. I had one who wanted to do it because I didn't use "Dear Sir" in messaging.

    Christ some people are tight.

Selling a mic and the guy asks me how much to post and so I quote him €5. He agrees but says I need to pay the PayPal fees. Fair enough I say and then he says he won't send payment until I send him a photo of the AnPost receipt. I agree to this too and then when I do he sends payment but only gives me €4.20 for postage as that was how much An Post charged me.

Guess he thinks Easons hand out bubble wrap envelopes for free.

Had an item up afew weeks ago for 20 euro,a guy with decent feedback offered me 15. I accepted and said that I will include free standard postage and packing aswell.

We move to PM then he tells me that he wants registered post to be included in the 15 euro he offered, when I refused and tell him I was offering free standard postage and packing even though I didn't have to and if he wanted it registered then it would cost him an extra 5 euro.

He then said he wanted me to post the item first before he would pay as he had items go missing before on him so if it went missing then he doesn't get the item and I won't get paid. When I told him that I would only post when I have received payment he tells me that I am being too difficult to deal with... cheeky Cnut

Obviously the 420 positive feedbacks I have on adverts found me terrible to deal with aswell!!!

reading some posts cracks me up :) ,the few times ive used adverts, would been for electronics mostly, and conversation would go ,offer amount and date when to meet etc if all well, then go trough,if cant agree on time line etc just say thx and wont waste persons time.

Now the part that i dont get is people offering free stuff ? whats the point,id have tons of stuff that needs getting rid off but to even think to put it online is complete time waste of task, otherwise if it was any use why not bring all crap to charity shops where people would put it to good benefit if it was worth it.

only time that was selling on adverts, it was note3 for someone else who couldn't make the meet, when went to meet up with person he popped his sim in,and at the time it didnt pick it up - he thought i was taking him for a ride, but little drama-eventually figured the phone wasn't cleaned in two years time,so mistake was on mine side for not checking beforehand.

Had some user make a good offer and accepted it earlier, he then proceeded to ask questions on the item which were answerable on the description. What a donkey. I just gave up on him gave him negative feedback.

I was looking for a Samsung tablet and found a seller in Tallaght. Pics were a bit blurry but everything looked good.

Went to collect and she showed me the tablet. Apparently it was bought for to keep her young child busy and the thing was FILTHY. I mean properly covered with food, grease, handprints and just general dirt. The usb port and speaker holes were crusted with grime. The screen was cracked, but not noticeable if you took a photo from the angle she took it from. No mention of that in the ad.

I just walked away. Waste of time and petrol. Negative feedback to warn the next person.

Why would you be fuming? You would have been wasting the sellers time because you chose not to read the description.

I wouldn't leave bad feedback for it, but I can see why the seller did. It's annoying having to answer loads of questions that are already answered in the description.

Reminds me,just recently I put a lovely condition couch up for free.
Only condition was,who ever took it needed to collect it themselves.
Guess what the first question was???
Would I deliver it to their house around 40miles away.

The whole point of putting it up for free was that I would get it out of my way quickly and the person getting it would be happy to come and collect it as it was free.
So we would both be happy.
How stupid do you have to be to not realise that?

I didn't leave negative feedback over it but I can see how some people could get sick of stupid questions.
I reckon anyone that cares about their 100% rating, doesn't go asking too many stupid questions.

I wouldn't leave bad feedback for it either but if someone makes an offer the only discussion after that should be around payment, meeting up, collection etc. Buyers shouldn't be making an offer and then asking questions about the product if the answers to those questions could turn them off buying it.

Exactly . Especially since they agreed to buy it already. Asking questions afterwards only leads to them backing out

Aye, it's a form of buyers remorse. They've made the offer, it's been accepted and now they regret it.

As a seller recognize the bad buying signals and place no real effort in to the deal as they aren't going to buy in the end.

Annoying or not you are the seller, they are parting with their money and if they want to be 100% sure then let them.

I recently turned down an offer on one of my items I was selling
    - only reason was it was from a adverts user who seemed to like giving negative feedback to his buyers for asking 'stupid' questions.

No question is stupid when you are selling - you only have to point them to the description - and if the information is not there in the description then its a valid question.

Any questions about the item should be on public view in the advert listing. It benefits all as a result.

Private messages should be reserved for the arranging of collection.

If I got a number of qualifying questions after an offer was made and accepted I would be p*ssed too. It smacks of a messer or someone who wants to back out.

I would leave negative feedback but I would be quick to draw and end to the private chat and relist the item.

The spelling police have arrived. The fondness of the negative feed back for triviality is now explained.

If you overuse something it dilutes its value.

when I look at feedback scores I find I have to look at the comments to see was it warranted or now. Didn't use to have to do that. Negative feedback used to be for something significant.

Then its not about you is it. Its a general comment about negative feedback. How its abused.

You can leave a general comment for everyone, and not respond to the buyer specifically. Then no ones put out.

The thread is about adverts being a joke. A lot of it stems from people being unreasonable. Unreasonable feedback, unrealistic prices, offers, ads not marked as sold, no way to filter commercial ads not marked as commercial.

Obviously someones making a profit on it, or it wouldn't still be active.

You use adverts how you want and I'll use it how I want. Closing on 200 positive reviews so I don't need you telling me how I can and cannot use the feedback system.

The fact is that people ask stupid questions that are already in the description. That's a joke. I don't leave negative feedback for it but they're wasting my time opening the notification. If it doesn't annoyed you then fair enough but it annoys others.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

I'm not sure why youre annoyed about something that isn't about you. Or why you think I'm telling you to stop doing something, that you don't do in the first place.

Also I'm not telling anyone to do anything. Just that it seems odd to leave bad feedback for a transaction that never even happened. I doubt anyone would continue engaging with someone who obviously is time wasting. You'd just cancel the offer and move on. No one with experience would waste any significant time on it.

I wouldn't, it's pretty normal tyre kicker stuff.

Only ever had problems with some of the foreign lads. Jesus it's like getting blood out of a stone. They offer the price and agree to meet...grand. Then they start giving me the third degree on the item. Like the post above I feel all the questions and nitty gritty should be done on the ad before the meet. One Polish guy was acting like he was a customer and I was the salesman of some shop. It's f*cking Adverts not Harvey Normans. He seemed to want me to "sell" the item to him at the meet. Another nutter offered the asking price, we exchanged numbers and then rang me to ask me a load of questions about the item. He also wanted a proof of purchase....it was an Android games console for heaven's sake!!

I've nothing against immigrants but f*ck me some of them are hard, hard work.

To be fair I've also had a few Irish "characters" like people who try to haggle a bit more off the price at the meet....wtf? Another time I was selling a FireTV box and met up with some guy after walking a good distance to the nearest shopping centre (and within an hour of him offering me the asking price). He takes a look at it and says "Oh it doesn't have a SPDIF port, goodbye" when I made it blatantly clear on the ad title it was the latest model and a simple Google search would have elicited such info.

Lazy bastards who don't want to Google, or type the questions on the ad or haggle on the ad are going to be the death of me. They can't be bothered to do a bit of research and make up their own minds That's fine if you're going into PC World but not with private sellers. It's taking the p*ss in my opinion.

Like the poster above I feel the meet should just be about exchanging the goods for the cash and inspecting the item's condition...nothing else! Don't waste my time getting me to meet up and backing out over something that could have easily been brought up before.

Not doubting you but I've had nothing but the opposite.
Usually Polish lads, I just tell them the price is the price and always they are happy to accept.
Maybe it's because they know they are getting a bargain!!!:D
