    Beautiful justice that.

Funny thing is, had they caught him at the time he’d likely be a free man now..

No D.N.A. at the time and a dirtbird gave him an alibi.

Not sure if mentioned but the murder by Frank McCann of his wife and daughter at Butterfield Ave Rathfarnham Dublin. When you watch t.v. detective shows and say to yourself "ah thats a bit far fetched" Then just think of all the murders in Ireland over the years and the efforts the killers went to cover up.

A German tourist was murdered near me 20 years ago, while she was making her way out to newgrange.
A local fella got done for it after his missus rang the police. the police appeal on crimeline asked did your partner have clothes go missing, was he acting strange etc etc n she copped he had - I'd say she was sleeping with one eye open that night.

I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned Marc Dutroux.

That case was so unnerving because there is a wife who turned her head and links to a wider paedophile ring going all the way to the top.

Holy sh1t! Just reading this on wiki, that runs DEEP!

The Miami Showband massacre by Biritsh forces and Loyalists. It shows exactly what Catholics faced in the North and might go some way to explaining some of their actions although i'd never defend most of them.

Dunno about that. Both sides engaged in terrible acts of brutality on civilians from both sides.

How does the Miami showband explain Jean McConville and leaving those children to freeze in an empty house?

IIRC the Robert Holohan case was strange in that the media never came down too hard on Wayne O'Donoghue when his identity was revealed. He was always presented as being from a "respectable family". He even gave a statement to the media when he was standing outside prison having been released which is unheard of really.
Roberts parents must have felt cheated, 3 years was nothing. You would wonder how he didnt know what he was doing in that moment and that he was obstructing the childs airway.Accidental horseplay was how it was termed.

The papers tracked him down later on...He went on to start a new life in England and changed his name to Paddy living as an architect.

Unlikely to commit a crime ever again I suppose but you would wonder in that moment was it malice or accident..

Certainly the way he went about pretending to look for Robert and even comforting the Holohans suggest some sort of twisted motive. Also the fact he tried burning the youngsters body after discarding it in a ditch was horrific.

Not sure if it was metioned but the UVF/Loyalist massace in Loughlinisland in 1994. Nationalists had gathered to watch their nation play in the 94 world cup and 6 where shot dead and many more wounded. Really put sport into perspective.

I dont think anyone in the south can really relate to what it was like to be a catholic in the north and denied the most basic of civil rights.

Bloody Sunday in Derry. The occupying forces of the british empire massacres unarmed civil rights marchers. Harrowing stuff.

    It doesn't
    Miami Showband = 1975
    Jean McConville = 1972

Similar to Aaron Brady, I wonder who these people can move on and have a normal life after committing these crimes.

Whilst I don't remember the actually murder I always remember the court case with Catherine Nevin when I was growing up. It was a massive case at the time and it was unusual to see a woman in court.
She always reminded me of my aunt.

For me it's the murder of Jastine Valdez. Being from the area and a woman of similar age to her it really spooked me.

Coming from the north there are a litany of crimes committed by all sides that are etched into the memory. There are obviously nuances as to what certain people consider a crime or “legitimate” killing (eg some people can find justification for taking someone’s life based on their being a member of particular organisations or past actions).

One that has stayed with me is, on the face of it, pretty unremarkable by Troubles standards: a teenage girl shot 6 times in the head while she slept in her Protestant boyfriend’s bed, for no other reason than being a Catholic. I remember her dad saying afterwards that she once asked him whether the IRA was Protestant or Catholic.

I think her sheer innocence was what stood out for me which contrasted against the callous nature of her brutal killing. Her killer knew her and her boyfriend, had socialised and even shared the same circle of friends. He knew where she was staying that night, knew the house would be unlocked, crept into the bedroom and murdered her in cold blood.

Just one of those ones I randomly think about from time to time.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned the Roma girl who was subjected to a horrendous death by drug dealing scum. Not even sure if anyone was done for actual murder. Some of them are now dead, thankfully.

It stuck in my mind because I knew the main culprits' family and they were scum, with exception of one of the sisters. Their mother was a nasty old count of a money lender in Oliver Bond and reared these creatures.

jesus thats awful, it just goes to show the nastiness of sectarian attitudes where you can get killed for your surname or perceived religion.

Was watching that BBC doc Once Upon a Time in Iraq the other night and it was similar in Iraq, you couldnt tell the difference between a Sunni Iraqi and a Shia one except by their surname. There was Iraqi army checkpoints and insurgent checkpoints so to get through both types the citizens got a second ID card made up so they would have one with a Sunni surname and another with a Shia surname. If you pulled out the wrong ID at the wrong checkpoint you would end up killed on the spot.

There was instances of that where a Shia pulled up to a Shia checkpoint but thought it was a Sunni one and pulled out their Sunni ID card. They would be pulled out of their car and be begging for their life trying to convince their executioner that they were actually Shia with a fake Sunni card. They would get shot regardless, it was truly vicious stuff. Its hard to think that you could be killed just for your surname.

Not a crime but watching the shooting of Daniel Shaver. The cop was found not guilty but it was a cruel way to die and you can hear the fear in Shavers voice. The cop was fired, then rehired then he retired on a full pension due to the stress the killing caused him. So crazy.

The sick fúcker that lured the two little girls away from a birthday party in the Midlands and subjected them to all sorts of horror.

The bastárd that sexually assaulted the 6 week old baby in the North.

Anything involving children really affects me.

Dunblane - I remember my mam and dad being traumatised for a day or 2 by it and I was too young to understand what had happened. They were expecting my sister at the time (unknown to me till months later) and called her Sophie after one of the victims.

Yeah that was very ****ed up. Sort of parents worst nightmare that you think actually never happens but it was over a very short time period.

Haven’t seen a mention here yet of Meredith Kercher. The one guy who admitted to killing her must be due for release soon enough, I think his sentence was only about 16 years. Rudy Guedes is his name.

The Russian downing of a commercial flight in 2014 was difficult. I was somewhat involved in the aftermath and I don't know, something about getting details of all the kids on board. Little toddlers away on their holidays and imaginging what happend to them and seeing their little items on the ground.

Remember one of the passengers posted on his Facebook a pic of the plane from the boarding gate and said something like “if this one goes missing this is what it looks like”. It was only a few months after mh370 went missing.
I often think while sitting in a plane at 35000 meters, if that type of thing happened. I think you would be alive and conscious for a few seconds before you black out. It must be the most surreal and terrifying second or 2 you could ever imagine.

Not sure if its been mentioned since I last read the thread. But my first experience of a serious crime in Ireland was the Malcom McAthur case in 1982. I was only about 10 at the time, but it took place in areas I was familiar with and was real big news at the time.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUBU

Who can forget GUBU and the deal done after McArthur pleaded guilty to the murder of Bridie Gargan, despite also murdering Donal Dunne in Offaly.

The killing of Salt in Malahide back in the late 90's.

Two donkeys called Salt and Pepper were always in the Casino just outside the village and some scumbag decided to beat Salt with an iron bar one night before driving it through their skull and killing him/her.

I think one of the guys with him actually went to the Garda Station not long ofter it happened to report it.

Violence against another human can sometimes be accounted for by provocation, retaliation or such in my mind but that kind of attack on an animal is truly sickening.

the guy who did it was really just a bad sort.
