They couldn't have picked a worse game for Kratos. He doesn't suit the Fortnite scene, as noted above he just doesn't look right with a gun. It also hurts a little every time I see him do one of those stupid dances....

He was in everybody's golf world tour and didn't look out of place. I won a G0 tournement online with him handicapped with a mandatory traditional swing.

If he didn't look out of place playing golf, I'm sure he'll be fine shooting the Fotnite toons

Has there been any decrease in production though? I think demand for these products has just gone through the roof.

Amd and Nvidia's suppliers can't make enough chips for them.

Even puppy prices have went crazy, if you can find them. This to me just points to a huge surge in demand due to people working from home and distance learning.

Playing the lauded CrossCode, and yeah the old school, Chrono Trigger feel is strong with this one. Two things strike me though...

    1. the shock this was built entirely in JavaScript; that's quite astonishing they pulled so much from it.
    2. I am done with lazy f*cking tutorial sections at the start. Oh hey, your abilities aren't working, let's go through a bazillion learner tasks. Well done you pressed B!

Been playing a lot of Spiritfarer - not something you can finish quickly or easily, it seems! Started it hoping it’d be a nice, contained, narrative-led game, but by god it’s a sprawling one!

I do like it a lot overall - it’s perhaps the freshest take on a Metroidvania I can remember (not the best - that’d be Hollow Knight - just the most ambitious). But it’s that and a resource management / community management / settlement builder game as well. It has this really strange pace where you’re constantly busy, with dozens of moving pieces at any given time. There’s a mind-melting variety of resources to collect and use in a bunch of different ways. So it’s total, relentless busywork, but in a way that has this particular sense of focus and constant goals / upgrades to work towards. The balance feels a bit off - there’s been a few stretches when progress has kind of ground to a halt for me until I pulled a bunch of resources together. And sometimes the triggers for actual story progress seem a tad messy and arbitrary. But I do like the flow when you have a particular sense of purpose and a couple of different goals to work towards.

It looks and sounds great - like an animated film in motion - although the story has left me a tad cold (mainly because it can feel like ages between each chunk of story). But it’s an interesting game that does some familiar things in an admirably different way... just don’t expect to polish it off in a weekend :pac:

Following on from Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin, in the latest news of amazing games the mainstream press are ignoring, Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate released on Steam and the Switch during the week.

Been waiting on a Shiren game to hit steam for ages. Shiren is a rogue-like game. It's part of the mystery dungeon series which pretty much every modern rogue-like is based off of. It was originally released in the west as one of the last Vita games so got criminally ignored. Hoping this release does a lot better. I've only played a little bit of this but previous Shiren games have been incredible and are probably the best rogue-like games that sticks to more traditional rogue gameplay and are far ahead of others in terms of their design and ideas.

Good chance Shiren will fly under the radar as I've been anticipating it coming out and hadn't realised it already had!

Now all I need is someone to remaster Azure Dreams and can die a happy man...oh wait, no thats from Konami.......sigh *grabs pachinko balls*

I think Shiren is a good stepping stone for people unsure about rogue games and want to give one a try. It's got a huge amount of complexity and systems but is still far more accessible than going in cold to something like Nethack.

The problem with a modern show, as noted, is that it's all available online now anyway, and a tv show wouldn't have anything new to show, because it would already have been leaked or shown online. When we were young and GamesMaster and the other shows were out, it was during a time where internet access was still limited, so was possibly the only source of information outside of magazines, and seeing a game in action is better than seeing screenshots in a magazine.

But I agree also that it shouldn't be aimed solely at kids, because a: the average age of a gamer now is mid-30's, and b: it results in a lot of games not allowed to be shown because of age ratings. I think there's definitely a market for a good, comedy driven competition/review panel type show. I would be behind Dara hosting it, as he's a genuine gamer with a genuine interest in it, but he will need a good team behind him and bosses/producers that know about the medium, otherwise it's just setting itself up to fail.

No issue with a game show aimed at kids though, but I can't see it lasting tbh.

Something like No Clip could work. Docs on the making of games/successes of popular dev companies.

Gamesmaster was for kids, and people remember it fondly because they were kids when they watched it. I'm not sure it's necessarily wildly better than more recent content, though it did benefit from strong presenters. The thing is, at that time, that age group was the primary market for games. There are of course still many games for kids and stuff like Minecraft and Fortnite are huge for that reason and there's still plenty of room for games shows for kids. But to a large extent the industry has grown up over the last couple of decades, while the perception of it from TV shows hasn't.

VideoGaiden was excellent by the way, good call on that, I'd forgotten they'd done that show for BBC.

Still love their God Hand review.

In another update in awesome games that the mainstream press are ignoring:

I know, I know, I won't shut up about how great Ace Combat 7 is. I'll stop.

Project Wingman however is an Ace Combat game made by Ace Combat fans that is borderline plagiarism. Which is a good thing because AC is awesome and they absolutely nailed it.

So for a good bit less than half the price of AC7 what do you get? A full campaign that is pretty great so far. Great graphics that aren't quite as good as AC7 but pretty damn close. A great soundtrack. Cheeseball story.

But you also get a full Rogue like mode. And on top of that the entire thing can be played in stomach churning VR. The VR mode is so good in this game that I'd recommend this to anyone with a VR headset.

It's a bargain considering what you are getting.

    Crackdown 3? Duke Nukem Forever?

    they needed more time :pac:.

and funnily enough, Crackdown 3 was likely pushed out as it was bleeding money from a development POV, and didn't someone else take over Duke Nukem and push it out relatively quickly.

pushed out like the turds they were.

I was hoping they'd spend longer on it, like "holiday" 2021. I wouldn't have much confidence in them salvaging it in such a short space of time.

Edit: Oh sorry, I read Feb 2021 :-D Yeah fall sounds about right, technically that gives them up until the end of December.

If I buy a code off the likes of Eneba or Instant gaming, do I have to use the code within a certain amount of time i.e. like within a couple of days. I want to buy a couple of Nintendo Family memberships for some nieces and nephews for Christmas and I just wanted to check that if I both them now, they'd still be valid on Christmas day.

Number 2: has the best mix of gameplay & character; 1 is quite janky in places (the vehicle sections in particular), while 3 kinda screwed the pooch a little. 2's the sweet spot IMO.

2 - by far the best in the series, and fairly self-contained in some key respects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I played 1 and 2 recently for the first time they are alright games nothing ground breaking anyway. There are better games I played on the 360 from that era.

If you have a Xbox all 3 are on game pass. I will play 3 eventually as I have other games to get through first.

    Andromeda.
    /runs for cover

2 is the best, 3 is alright except that ending.

1 and 2 are brilliant but 2 is a definite upgrade on 1.

I would advise playing both in order if you can commit the time. I loved the story and characters in both.

then just sit tight for the new release coming.

    Hopefully that blows our minds.

"Returnal" on PS5 (out in March21)

Looks like R-Type in 3rd person instead of a ship, and a load of great graphics thrown in.
I am very sceptical on this one.

The developer Housemarque are very good, they've made some great games before like Super Stardust, Resogun, Alienation (my favourite), Nex Machina. I'm glad they're able to try something with a bigger budget.

Did not realise it was housemarque. Loved those guys since I played the Reap on PC. Even had a fondness for super stardust on the Amiga.

Started playing Forza Horizon 3 on PC. Decided to get it and all the DLC as I've missed out on Horizon 1 and 2 which have been delisted.

Forza Horizon really is just on another level compared to all other arcade racers out there at the moment. It's an absolute joy to play.

They’ve already delisted 3 as well. Microsoft ruthless when cutting off games after just three or four years.

Ugh, totally forgot about the delisting. Manged to get the base game, Expansion and Car pass just now for a reasonable price at least. Looks like the window to get it through any kind of legit means is closing fast though. :o

I have to admit that I'm somewhat perplexed as to why they delist them. Is it down to the ongoing cost of music licensing?

Music and car licenses. And the DLC is usually a tie in. It was fast and furious for 2 but there's also hot wheels and lego DLC.

Glad I got forza 3 when I did a few weeks ago!

Another interesting thing about the Forza Horizon games, on the first two, you drive on the right and on the latter two, you drive on the left.
