Cheers! I might pop it open anyway later and maybe buy some stuff and leave it at that, don't have to download just yet etc

I don't want to miss out on sales, would prob have to wait til after Christmas otherwise.

So I got it out the box. I avoided too much reading up and YouTube video on it etc.

Packaging and the devices themselves are really nice. The HDMI and USB cable have a nice band around them, although it's only a twist tie on the power cable, knit picking really but shows how nice the rest is.

So set up looks nice and easy but, it has been a nightmare so far on WiFi, took 4 attempts to connect despite full signal.

Then the ability to sign in with a pin using a device on the same network, sounds awesome but didn't work. Had to do the old fashioned way. Which required second stage verification, sounds easy, but not when you can't get the virtual keyboard to show....

Some random button got it up, should be automatic.

Then the 700mb system update started, great, but no, connection kept dropping.

So I turned it off, connected to Ethernet and its downloading fine now. All other devices working fine on WiFi. I hope the update will sort it out, as I hoped to take it to other people's houses etc to have a bit of a game before nights out etc with all the emulators. Can't guarantee they will have a wired connection.

So not a great start for me so far.... But I'll reserve judgement until all set up and updated.

Hopefully the system update sorts out the WiFi connecting issues.
If not, just try rebooting your wifi box to make sure that it's not the problem.
I know you say other devices are fine, but it happens me sometimes where my phones on the network working fine and the laptop will just refuse to connect. As soon as I reboot the modem, it works fine :D

Yeah that might be it, but I rebooted it early this morning, so I doubt it. Its within 10m of the router too, but when I connect it to the TV it will be further, still it showed full coverage.

I'll update when I get it up and running.

Good stuff, hope it works for you!

I was setting up the wetek play box last night and it was having a hard time with WiFi when I was first set up, but after a firmware update, seemed to be fine :)

So got mine delivered today, I have wired internet so it updated pretty quickly first think was to install Kodi from the play store this failed a couple of times but after a reboot it installed ok also installed ES Explorer for later use, I stuck the blackbox build on first and it's working, haven't sideloaded any other apps yet, I'll try that tomorrow, might also stick the beast build on as well as that has an arcade emulator built into Kodi https://spartanpixel.net/Kodi/thebeast/

I've also stuck a Logitech K400 keyboard onto it and its working fine. So day one I'm pretty happy with the purchase. Lets keep the thread going for any helpful tutorials or decent apps to stick on our new toy!

I ordered mine yesterday from Amazon.co.uk. Thought it better to get it there as there would be no hassle with plugs. Was only a fraction more expensive than Amazon.de.

My plan is to use this to stream all my PC games.
Looking to retire my PS3. If I can play Dark Souls 1 with minimal lag though this, it will be worth the price.

People with knowledge of Kodi, would "thebeast" be the easiest and best way to get the online tv working or are there better options?

    Thanks

    Yea, please do.

Can see a a few of us needing some assistance, or giving help over the coming months, and would nice to have a place to check for any goodies people come across.

    thread title change maybe?

Accidentally ordered mine off US Amazon instead of the UK version.
It has been shipped today so should get it next week.

Also ordered a wireless mouse/keyboard to use with it.

Plan on using it for Plex Media server and going to install some version of Kodi for online watching and playing old retro Arcade/Emulated games.

So got ES File Explorer working, I had to take the shield off my wired connection and put it on my wifi network, then launch ES File Explorer turn on remote manager and it will give you an ftp address like ftp://192.168.1.44:3721/
Download something like FileZilla and install on your PC, in Host type the ip address and leave username and password blank and in port put 3721 hit quick connect and your in.

Now for what I installed last night you need to download the latest apk files, so some fun ones to try are Show box & Mobdro I did install aptiode thinking I could install the other two from within that but couldn't find them.

So once you find some interesting APK's download them and use the left pane of FileZilla to find the files and then on the right you have the remote files on your folder I picked the download folder, right click or double click on the apk you want to transfer and it will transfer over to the shields download folder.
To install it I went back to my shield went into ES File Explorer browsed the download folder and double clicked each of the apk's and went about installing them. One thing I found is that I had to use my keyboard/touchpad to go over each file to run it. couldn't seem to do it with the gamepad.
I'm currently installing the beast build, they seem to have removed the Shield version I will report back if there is any emulation built into the build.

Tell me more about 'beast build' ..I'm guessing it's a flavour of KODI?

Anyone having problems like me with voice search on the main screen?

I ask "Open Google Music" and it says "did not catch that"

The field is filled with the command. When i press right on the controller it opens Google Music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭moleyv

I was actually very impressed with the voice control.

My WiFi issues are still there though. Tried on a different router, range extender, changed channel etc.

I'll just use it wired with a homeplug or range extender.

I'll have to do wired anyway for the game link thing. Have to start looking into that, no bloody time for games yet though.

A minor niggle for me is the volume control on the controller, in some apps it can be hit and miss. Probably the apps fault, but nonetheless they are made especially for this platform.

I wish there were a few more racing games there, something like real racing 3. Asphalt is kind of rubbish, haven't looked at the others.

Installed a kodi build, not sure if they can be talked about really?

I saw plenty of emulators in the play store, not free, must look into them more. Obviously can sideload too.

I stuck in a 64gb microsd right away, 16gb would fly. I'll have to see how big emulators and ROMs are, might need to connect a hard drive, doubt they would work stored on a NAS?

I am wary about talking Kodi builds. The thread will get locked.

So Voice is working perfectly on the main screen for you Moleyv?

It works in Youtube for me alright

Amazon france managed to send my shield and remote in two different packages, and guess which is coming first tomorrow...
No word of the Shield yet, it has shipped with Royal Mail, and the remote shipped with UPS. Is this normal procedure?

The remote is in a separate box. I got from the UK site and they came together in a larger box with some other items I ordered.

Maybe someone else who order from French site can say if it is the same for them.

Just tried it there now, and not working. Just as you described.

Now I'm doubting if my searches were done on the main screen or in the play store.

I did a quick Google, and people on xda developers are saying it is a known issue. Their discussion started a few days ago. Nvidia are working on a fix.

I think I will submit a ticket regardless, combined with my WiFi issues, it is certainly annoying.

I'll wait for their response, if its crap, I'll send it back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭moonboy52

That is me on the XDA thread talking about it after the OP mentioned it when I did a Google search.

A guy on the HUKD owners thread confirmed he had the same issue yesterday. I posted again today but no-one confirmed the issue

It works in YouTube. It's a small if annoying issue, not enough for me to return it.

Not experienced any WiFi issues on my end

Yeah voice search works well for me in other apps.

I'm more logging the error than anything. But if something else isn't working, I would be fairly annoyed.

Voice search in something I want to use without a keyboard is fairly important. I logged the two tickets using the controller. Painful, too lazy to look for a wireless keyboard.

Setup my Shield TV during lunch and it's an impressive piece of kit.
I quickly tested the local PC game streaming and I was dissappointed that the picture quality was so poor.
I've got the Shield TV wired to the router and the PC connected via Homeplugs to the router. It should be a lot better. I'll have to see what I can do to improve things.
Played some Black Ops 3 on it and response times using the controller was great.

Moleyv, on XDA, a guy told me to change the language to US instead of GB. I tried it and no joy.

I put it to sleep, tried today and it worked.

Maybe it was sorted or the "fix' worked.

It is only out in the EU a while so maybe, they are still working on it

I tried it there this evening, changed nothing, but it just worked after turning on. Working well, except for 'open spotify' ,opens tune in radio haha.

I have to say, 'open TV player for spotify'. I found that funny, but it seems the app isn't official, maybe has something to do with it.

I've been reading a bit into this as I was going to be doing similar. It seems they really say to avoid homeplugs. Some people have had best results with PC into router, and shield connected to WiFi. Seems a bit odd though.

Stupid question on this, but if I've a high end gaming PC in the house can I use this to play off it on my TV? If the answer is yes then my Christmas present is sorted :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭moleyv

The answer is yes if you have a supported nvidia GPU. A steamlink does similar, far cheaper if you don't need all the rest that goes with the shield tv

Edit: actually not sure if the steam link only works with the steam controller, might be worth looking into.

I must power on my desktops tomorrow to see if any of them are compatatible, I'm losing my mancave so was resigned to losing the PCs, if I can stream play by having my desktop under the stairs while I play off the TV would be a great compromise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭moonboy52

It streams really well. It is 3 times the price of a Steam link, but to me well worth it.

Took me a day to warm to it but I can play all the GTA's I bought on the play store as well as the Final Fantasy's I bought at half price.

The Google music app is well done, as well as YouTube.

I have every emulated game known to man on it and it has a built in Chromecast.

    Happy for €160

Not just true for Nvidia. There is a third party solution called Kino Console that will work for AMD but you need a good spec PC for it to work well.
