The streaming service is great. Don't know if I'd pay a tenner a month though, but I'm enjoying the free trial.

Never got much use out of our LG smart TV - slow and the Netflix app was never updated to support profiles. Used a combination of a WD Live and Chromecast. The Shield has replaced both and is so much faster.

I'm much the same, Smart Tv was slow and clunky but usable.

I now have Plex server running on the Shield pulling content from my NAS. I just ordered an SSD and USB3.0 case that I am going to use to expand the storage on the Shield.

As for the tenner a month, if a game costs between €20 and €50 (using cheaper numbers as the selection of games is a little older), and if I get through a game every month or two then the streaming service isn't that bad.

I see The Witcher 3 is available on it, but you have to buy it for €50. That is a little weird, you are paying the tenner for the service and a lump sum for the game.

I'm not a big gamer, so I guess I wouldn't get the use out of it. Did buy one game though, I hope it'll still work after the trial expires. It also comes with a Steam key so I could run it on a PC (if I had one suitable).

AFAIK, you need a Now sub active, for a bought game to be playable (GeForce Now, not an Android Play Store Game)

Wanted to clarify incase of a Google Search by someone

I received one of these from Amazon during the week, and only got around to plugging in today

    Wow. Very very impressed.

Anyone else been using Retrox with their shield?

I have been feeling more than a little bit nostalgic this Last few days:)

I've been looking at the 2nd Gen Shield TV and it looks as if it would suit my needs down to the ground - Kodi, Youtube, some emulation and Android games. I may even sell my Xbox One as I haven't turned it on in months.

Just one question, is there any issue in using an USB 3 hard drive? Has anyone noticed any slowdown from using it to store games/videos etc? I could get the 500gb version but I much prefer the form factor of the newer one.

Yes have the Amazon Video app which is the version that offers the limited Irish selection. I've a full Amazon Prime UK account but can only view a fraction on the content.
Tried going through a VPN but the app wont load once the VPN is connected.
Side loaded the standard Android Amazon Video App but it just crashes when it tries to load a video (have this sideloaded on another android box working perfectly with a VPN to get the entire Amazon UK catalog).

Think I selected Language as English UK during the setup as I had read something on the Shield forums about it only appearing if it was set to English US or English UK but thats the only thing I specifically set...saw other mentions of disabling location but don't think I set that.
It was just available on the shield app row, I didn't need to install from the play store.

New update out now which brings Google Assistant to the Nvidia Shield TV:

    https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/28/16370012/google-assistant-nvidia-shield-tv-update

It was announced ages ago so good to finally have it. Haven't had a chance to use it much yet, but looking forward to see what it can add.

    Any thoughts?

Installing now. I was beginning to doubt it would ever arrive.

Edit: It seems to be US only for now (Assistant)

Edit 2: Seems setting the Language to US will work :)

Fair play nvidia, the box that keeps on giving

Both, although the controller with the 2017 has a mic that can be set to always listen so you can use it like a Google Home, the 2015 remote mic must be pressed

Excellent, something new to play with!
    Thanks :)

Thinking about getting this primarily for use with Kodi. Is it a bit of overkill? I already have a PS4 so don't think I would be using the gaming functions.

Get a Xiaomi Mi box then so if you don't plan on gaming. It's got Android tv also

It's definitely overkill for just Kodi IMO, if your into retro gaming then it's great for that and then the odd casual game from the play store or if you like home automation stuff with the latest update you can use it "like" a Google Home with the Google assistant but if not I wouldn't waste the money, go with the Mi Box High horse recommended as it's the same experience for half the price.

I find the streaming on the mibox rather choppy

Are you using an Ethernet adapter? It's recommended to add one.

I am and it constantly drops through connection out of nowhere.

I think it's an official one as well though could be a knock off

Try it without it on wireless see if it's any better. I read there can be USB timeout issue with cheap Chinese adapters

I have tried both, might buy another official one and hope I get luckier

Nope it’s the best box for Kodi iptv and other apps that we are not allowed mention here! I’ve owned other cheaper Android boxes but the Shield is the best! I don’t use it for gaming! I bought the original on Amazon in a Cyber Monday deal so keep an eye out for deals on them!

Is there any point getting the Pro Version, I assume if you dl a lot of games you could use up the 16gb very quickly, but that aside if you are just using it for streaming etc there is no point in paying the extra 100 euros.

Only if you plan on using it as a Plex server. You can add a USB3 key later and adopt it for added storage but your Plex metadata saves to internal storage only giving you 15GB which isn't much which cannot be extended.

Otherwise get the small non pro and a fast USB key, this is what I've done.

No pont you can plug in a micro sd card or an external drive I’d go with the standard Shield.
