No pont you can plug in a micro sd card or an external drive I’d go with the standard Shield.

No SD slot on 2017 version but usb expansion ok.

For absolute seemless/flawless Kodi experience, it blows everything away.

Chromecast built in and as someone else mentioned home automation now via Google assistant

The Xiaomi Mi box is in the bargain alerts section for 40e for anyone that's interested.

That’s true I had the original I was using a Sandisk 64Gb class 10 and extended the memory but over time I was getting more freezing in the Shield so I took it out and it worked again fine. Might be the reason they dropped it from the newer version

Try it without it on wireless see if it's any better. I read there can be USB timeout issue with cheap Chinese adapters

Given the stuttering issues on the mibox, is there anything to be said for the amazon fire TV box with Kodi added to it? Seems like it would be a cheaper option and the reviews are pretty good.

Sorry if I'm dragging off topic here. I am tempted by the shield but it seems like a lot of cash...

This is a new device from Popcorn Hour that I took the plunge on today.
It's got Android TV, and the price is great.
I obviously can't attest to how it performs yet, it hasn't even shipped yet, but I'm optimistic that it won't be terrible :D

I know a good few who have the Mi box without issues, some are using wireless, others added an ethernet adapter. The Fire TV needs a lot of work to be an experience on par with a Mi Box, it's completely geared towards Amazons eco system, does not natively have Google apps or Play store

They have stopped selling them now, you can still buy reconditioned ones for about £80. Plenty of tutorials on installing Kodi and it’s not that hard so I wouldn’t be afraid of going that way.

Is anyone else having trouble with Google Assistant on their Shield? Last day or so the remote has stopped picking up sound altogether when the mic button is pressed (though Assistant launches). And Okay Google won't work on the controller, though it works fine if you press the button.
My five year old is most annoyed that he can no longer shout at Google.

I'm back using my Google home in the living room. Too many issues with Google assistant using the remote mic, it also lacks timers which I use often. It'll get better when updated and there is a dedicated mic

The mic in the remote is so hit and miss for me.. sick of it at this stage.

Is amazon still cheapest to get the shield?
Really want to get one. Cheers

Don't have a GH - plan was to use this to convince the family of it's merits.

€249 in curry's/pcw, I'm assuming amazon is cheaper than that! :)

I use my shield as a plex server..it can easily decode 3 x simultaneous 1080p streams with no issues.
Plex have a dedicated app for the shield and its fantastic I have to say.
Was running it on my nas but since NAS's are crap for decoding switched it to the shield.

It's very doubtful at this stage with the release of the home mini. Even it's design is poor IMO, most sitting room sockets are hidden behind units making it a bad place for a mic, the spot doesn't have a power cable

Have an issue with the remote. It was wroking fine until yesterday,it stopped working and is no longer listed on the list of accessories.
Anyone have a similar problem and get it fixed ?
I replaced batteries and no joy.

The mic on the remote has completely stopped working over a month now. And in general it's been very flaky - often slow to respond. Fairly new batteries too.
Must get on to Nvidia about it.

Looks like there's a update on the way for Plex on Android TV that improves Google assistant integration

Metal Gear Solid 3 was released today (€8.50)

MGS2 a while back. Pretty cool standalone games to have on the shield
