    Ethical debate time.

    Balls.ie posted this article.

    http://www.balls.ie/fitness-lifestyle/9-of-the-nicest-irish-rugby-jerseys-weve-ever-seen/316093

It breaks down the 9 nicest jerseys of pro rugby. Contains at least one per province, a few international shirts and every single one made by canterbury. The article is sponsored by Elverys Intersport, the official partner store to Canterbury in Ireland.

    Is this

A: An ethical dilemma, evidenced by the fact they are clearly not the nicest jerseys, and the prominence of the current non spectacular Leinster jersey.

B: A Bona Fide list that genuinely is the authors honest opinion.

C: Not an ethical dilemma because the lifestyle section of what is effectively a blog has no duty to readers to be fair and balanced.

It's a sponsored post, it's native advertising. Whether native advertising is unethical is up to interpretation really, but a lot of publications really can only make decent advertising revenue using it.

Whether it is A or B kind of depends on how much you trust the journalistic integrity of the source. Sponsorship is a fact of life if these kind of sites want to stay in business so it comes down to whether you trust them to actually be impartial. Some I would, some I wouldn't.

Edit: Actually, I misread that as Balls in general being sponsored by Elvery's. The fact that is a "sponsored article" is not made remotely clear enough for my liking to be honest.

Native advertising is usually more like "Elverys are opening a new store in Blackrock Village...." effectively a story that is in some way news worthy, but wouldn't gain such prominence without the sponsorship.

Nostalgia is like 80% of what Balls.ie is (where are the team from Italia 90 now). This is quite a blatant attempt to tap into that. I kinda hate it.

    Native Advertising btw.

Not quite. It's anything that matches the medium. This is a pretty textbook example of native advertising. It would be an article about a store opening if it was a different publication, such as a newspaper who would normally report in that form. The same happens on all of those sites, such as joe.ie etc. Not just those either to be fair, major publications do it with increasing regularity.

I think there's been a technical error on their part, whether incidental or not? At the top of the article in really small grey print it says "brought to you by" and then nothing, I guess that's supposed to be a logo or some other attribution/disclosure.

If that's true, that worries me. This is the first blatant example I have spotted in Ireland. So if it's happening loads I really think it is an ethical issue.

Haha, someone is using adblock. Work PC doesn't let me use adblock, maybe that's why I noticed it this time and not before. Ironically adblock making advertising more effective.

Ah, that would be it then. I don't see the attribution OR the ads either side of the article.

From Rathmines to Limerick takes me about 2 & 1/4 hrs. If you hit outskirts of Limerick anytime after 3.00 on a Friday or 4ish on other days avoid Adare.

I know a sweet little short cut round adare. Could take 30 mins to get through it when it's really bad. My way takes 8 mins and planks me right out the far side of it!!

Is it the same shortcut that phog has already posted?

    No.

Get to the roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway (it becomes a single road about 3 miles before this). Swing left...travel about 3 miles and take right. A few mins and at the end of that road take right at the T junction. Another minute or 2 and you come out on the other side of Adare. Head left and you're gone. I've taken that road before and ended up 25 minutes ahead of my Bro in law (who fecked me out of it when we got to ballinskelligs that evening!!).

That's fine if you don't get backlogged on the dual carriageway in heavy traffic. That's why I mentioned exiting earlier and using the back road via Patrickswell.

So the Connacht forum will be un moderated for a couple of weeks. Time to start winding up the hard core supporters (all 2 of them).

Don't forget to pack Zippy, you'll need your travel bag:
