I couldn't stand Spring Breakers. I thought it was intolerably brutal to be honest.

The first half an hour is jarring and unfocused. It nearly turned me off it but it really does come alive in the middle and final sections. I actually thought it would be rubbish but found it captivating by the end. A really clever film in a lot of ways. Maybe try and give it a second look?

Started watching The Code and really liking it, been looking forward to watching since it first aired and was just about to pull the trigger on buying the DVD when I saw it had been added to Netflix. I know it's a TV show and not a film but it plays out like of those great 70s political thrillers and is one which rewards a binge watch.

The Babadook and Goodbye to Language both added to US today. Haven't seen either myself but remember hearing lots of positives about them both.

Goodbye To Language is one of the most essential, inventive and radical films of recent times (albeit one that will not appeal to everyone). Just be aware that you are missing out important visual and even thematic layers by not watching it in 3D - and it's the one and only film I'd say that about!

Miracle Mile on the Irish Netflix. Good movie from the eighties about a guy who gets a phone call telling him that a nuclear holocaust is about to kick off. Really appealed to me because as a child i was really paranoid about the Cold War and all that.

It's done well, zips along nicely but does look dated, which adds to the appeal in all fairness.

Watched this today, excellent, nice and quick. Mentioned on a lot of top 20 lists as one of the best end of the world movies.

    Fruitvile Station

Follows the last 24 hours of a young black guy in LA. He has a long term girlfriend, a daughter, a loving family and he's looking for work. Decent guy all round. The main actor was in the Friday Night Lights TV show on NBC

Follows a true story of a topic very much in the news these days. Coming home from New Years eve celebration his group are arrested over a fight and the transport police shoot him in Fruitvile station. That's not a spoiler, see below

I never heard of this story before. At the start they show mobile phone video footage of the actual shooting and the film copies this

I thought this was a superb film and the main actor was excellent

    Thumbs up

One of the NY Times Film critiques said it wasnt an amazing film. But it does an excellent job showing the materialistic pressures of being young. The same issue is explored in Bling ring. That young people are often unhappy and expect to find happiest in materialistic things.
