I don't know whether this is considered PC or just the tree hugging, white, English do gooders fighting for minorities causes but....

About fifteen years ago I was working with two guys from Bradford, Yorkshire. If any of you don't know anything about Bradford it is that it has a HUGE asian community.

Anyway, there was this one particular street which the toilets in the bathrooms were pointing towards Mecca and was considered an insult when the Muslims were having a sh!t.
The loony dogooders and the fu@kin' PC brigade played up so much that they forced the local council to reconfigure all the said bathrooms so not to face Muhammad when parking their breakfast.

Britain is fu@kin' ruined because of this bending over backwards to appease foreigners and immigrants.
    Similar to this

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/4926114.stm

Facilities in a prison are being built so Muslim inmates do not have to face Mecca while sitting on the toilet. The Home Office said two new toilet blocks are being installed as part of a refurbishment at Brixton jail in south London.
Faith leaders had told prison bosses it was unacceptable for Muslim inmates to face Mecca while using the toilet.

Don't see why they can't just sit backwards on the toilet.

    Silly criminals.

Now that’s PC gone mad. You can’t expect a company to be aware of the particular regional slang of two lads. However, one would expect them to know about US slang which is already well-known over here from American TV and film. Also, they were the ones travelling, so the onus was on them to adjust

Except this company WAS pc gone mad! Unfortunately they did it in the dumb way, for example having induction classes for newly arrived US assignees on how to use telephones and showers, all because they wanted them to fit in well- best of reasons but a bit of research would have gone a long way

I know this will come across wrong, but here goes.

If they are so religious surely they wouldn't be in prison in the first place. Unless there is a rule built into some religions allowing theft, violence, etc. Or do they only use the bits of their religion that suit them?

Kind of behind on this thread, but why can't you say balls in a mostly female environment?

Ah this thread has gone to shìt tbh, started off lighthearted, then went polar...

But anyway, to answer your question GG-

It was considered inappropriate. I can see of course where she was coming from though, working with a team of six girls and there's me making off the cuff remarks. It's important for anyone to know the company they're in. Some people wouldn't have batted an eyelid, some will take offence.

In all honesty I appreciated her pulling me up on it because I have, well, to put it politely, a very lax language filter!

I curse like a sailor basically, not something I do on purpose, but I can be very assertive and pushy, which comes off sometimes as aggressive, and that does no negotiations any good!

Political correct thing, eh. Like being invited to an African-American Tie Wedding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭chakademus

In my kid's religion book, there is a modernised account of the Wedding at Cana.

The account is written in the form of a dialogue between Mary and her friends, as they ask her various questions about the wedding.

Questions like "Were there many people there?" "What did you have for dinner? "What was the Bride's dress like and what colour were the Bridesmaids? Beside this there was a footnote.

The footnote read (This question is a colloquial phrase which is asking about the colour of the Bridemaid's dresses and not their skin )

If you mean the differences between the American and English Dennises, there’s actually no relationship between the two. They were created independently at almost the exact same time in a bizarre coincidence.

Well, you learn something new every day. I never knew there was difference but did always wonder why the Dennis in that Walter Matthau film from the 90s didn't look anything like Dennis.

Why bother with a footnote rather than changing the question to "what colour were the bridesmaids' dresses"?

In China talking to the typical group of the new modern Chinese graduates, some girl turns around and says "No you can't call them black men, you have to call them chocolate men", I nearly fell of the seat laughing. Classic case of political correctness gone wrong.

In the Swedes silly attempt to engineer a utopian society of absolute equals, personal freedoms are apparently trumped by their fetish for crow-barring gender equality & human rights legislation into areas where common sense policy would surely yield better results.

In essence, they're saying a person who chooses to provide sex for sale is no freer than a slave.

He / She may think they are, but the State knows best...
"Those who defend prostitution argue that it is possible to differentiate between voluntary and non-voluntary prostitution, that adults should have the right to freely sell and freely purchase sex (...) However, based on a gender equality and human rights perspective, (...) the distinction between voluntary and nonvoluntary prostitution is not relevant."

why do Americans still use "retarded" as a proper medical term and we see it as offensive ? genuine question

why do Americans still use "retarded" as a proper medical term and we see it as offensive ? genuine question

Because it is the medical term and was used in medicine before it became offensive. We shouldn't expect the sciences to alter the terminology just because some people have a stick up their arse.

I remember my leaving cert biology teacher having to explain that "Retarded" and "Mongoloid" were medical terms and hence used in the book and her class. In particular I remember the look of contempt on her face at the thought of needing to preface her class with a disclaimer.

Edit - References to Mongoloids to describe Down Syndrome had apparently been dropped in 1965. Meh.

You feel we should still refer to the intellectually disabled and the mentally ill as idiots and lunatics respectively, no doubt?

Mongoloids are a race of people, the term does not describe those suffering with down syndrome; the original term for Down Syndrome being mongoloid idiocy

I prefer to use the word 'Fcktard' when I absolutely have to point out someones stupidity.

Its technically not referring to people with downs. And the added Fck feels good. Makes it stronger.
