Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    As far as I'm aware it's filtered with isinglass. I tried to check again there but barnivore is down. I didn't realise that some veg was fertilised that way. I agree you have to draw the line somewhere but I feel avoiding certain alcoholic drinks isn't too much of a sacrifice for me whereas trying to avoid bone meal fertilised veg would probably be a lot more difficult and/or result in me eating feck all. :p I do miss Guiness though. :(

    No, as I still eat eggs and dairy. Good idea if you don't. Vegans definitely should be, don't take Spirulina, that's more of a pseudo-B12.

    haha, no just thinking the only sources I get really are from a multi vitamin and the odd egg I've started to eat, I don't really eat dairy and I train in the gym a lot so I might need more b12 than the average joe? My mind has been foggy of late.
    Since it is water soluble I guess there's no harm in trying to get more.
    Just wanted to see if anyone recommends anything.

    It's not just vegans that need to supplement with B12, I've read a lot of the population whether meateater/vegetarian/vegan are b12 deficient. Best way to supplement is the liquid drops - solgar do a high strength one. Think it costs about 13 euro for about a 1 month's supply.

    I'm not sure if there is a better thread for this, but I had to mention the amazing meal I had last night. We were in Ahernes restaurant in Youghal, and when booking I mentioned that we're happy with the set menu, so long as there is a vegetarian option.

    Well, I have never been made feel more welcome. I was given 4 choices and went for a tower of roasted veggies with a mixed salsa, fresh pesto and a tomato sauce. It was fab, but not only that, the chef came out himself to see if it was ok & went on to tell me how delighted he was with the challenge.

    They do a taster menu in the place, which is a seafood restaurant, and I was told that if I was to come back I should book the taster menu and he'd create a vegetarian one for me! Multiple courses of veggie delight! We're definitely going to go back and if you're looking for a special place to have a dinner/ weekend for a veggie & non veggie couple (like my husband and I) it was perfect.

    Don't forget that you probably eat food fortified with b12 too such as soya milk. You can sprinkle things like nutritional yeast on your food also.

    If food weren't fortified everybody would be deficient in a lot of things, peoples diets are horrendous. You need a high strength one all right because a lot of b12 isn't absorbed.

    I take a multi mostly because the heavy training I do, After long days work/college and then gymming it, I try to make sure I have all my bases covered.
    I don't use soya milk or really eat fortified foods. I do use a bit of kara coconut milk and it has b12 but very small amounts.
    I went a bought some solgar b12 nuggets that dissolve on the tongue, I'm gonna try them for the month and see if I notice any difference.

    Just so you're aware, if your b12 gets very low you turn into a lunatic. I was crying over nothing, paranoid, angry over silly little things and had an overwhelming feeling of frustration all the time. I was so tired, but couldn't sleep and felt like I was wading through thick air all the time.

    I gave up my night job and I got B12 injections and the difference was amazing. I found out that I can't absorb B12 so it's not necessarily dietry, it has to be injected. I recommend now to anybody who will listen to have their levels checked next time they're in a doctor. It made such a difference to me.

    Well he certainly put the whole idea of a stressed anrgy chef back in its place! Every plate of food that came out was fab. Then this friendly fella wanders out to check how we're getting on, it's nice to have food made by someone who tells you how much he enjoyed preparing it.

    Plain omlette, on white bread with a hash brown and loads of ketchup, or else a roll with loads of salad and a packet of crisps. Either washed down by a bottle of lucozade.

    I do wish Nestlé would label their products as suitable for vegetarians (or not). I know there's a list on the website but it's not much use if you're in the supermarket or someone's house. Especially since some of the products seem to contain vegetarian whey but others don't so just reading the ingredients doesn't always help.

    got some of the veggie chicken looking thingys in the Asian market last night, guna give them a try.
    I was afraid of the veggie mutton,ribs and fish since I never really ate any of the actual meats.

    Found a small spray bottle in nourish for a fiver, I'm using it on fake chicken/tofu/beans. like a soy sauce. It tastes awesome.
    Thought people here might be into it for making a more complete protein profile for meals.

    I think it's more the amino acid profile, it has 16 in it, so it could help make a meal more balanced. instead of having to combine sources to make up a complete profile.

    But, all of those amino acids can be made up with a combo of two foods I reckon, eggs being one (if not averse to eating them ofc) and quinoa possibly being a second. 310mgs? that's not even a third of a gram!! Everybody should be eating at least their own weight in kgs of protein per day, a bit more for those who are weight training. This is to maintain your current muscle mass, not even for people trying to increase their mass through training.

    Aye, a gram of protein per pound of bw, but saying that I've seen sites and books varying that amount alot.
    Some people go up to 2 or 3 grams which i think is mental. and some people have said half a gram per pound. I think it varies greatly on the individual. It should definitely be the high% of calorie intake either way.
    I tend to aim for a gram per pound but don't worry if I'm a bit short on it.

    Typing it didn't seem right :p Meant that their weight in kg would be the amount of grams of protein the would consume.

    Sure, getting enough protein in a day to equal your bodyweight seems a bit too much tbh, and most stuff I've seen/heard on the subject looks to the g/kg bodyweight, rather than g/lb. You'd nearly be eating all day to get that (especially for veggies/vegans with a higher bodymass), and it would cost a fair bit too. As an aside, the human body can only convert 30g of protein per hour (a physiological limitation), so having more than that is not going to improve anything.

    I emailed l'oreal asking about one product and got the most longwinded and off the point email ever. It starts normally enough telling me what animal products are used in their products and how to identify them in the ingredients (because providing me a list or just providing a simple yes or no about the one product I asked about is too much work) and then they went on to say it's up to the individual to decide what they regard as against their vegetarian/vegan lifestyle like if you wear leather it's from animals or some spices are made from insects. They then talk about how they've stopped testing on animals...except they still do just not much....but they're working on ending all animal testing, honest. It wasn't a bad email as such they answered all my questions more or less rather than trying to sidestep them like some companies but it was just written so strangely. The bit about leather and the like came off pretty self-righteous. I think it was just the person who wrote it trying to avoid outright saying 'this product is not vegan' by saying it was my choice whether to label it vegan or not. I actually stated in my email what I meant by vegan but anyway...

    That is a bit of an old wives tale. When you eat a protein heavy meal, Your body releases a hormone, that slows down digestion. So that eventually you absorb everything.

    I see your lifting heavy things! Do you like it? :)

    This is what the email says
    Some of our products may contain derivatives of sheep’s wool (LANOLIN - though no animal is sacrificed to obtain this) and some of our products also contain beeswax, honey or silk amino acids, fish products (collagen and oil) and fowl products (eggs and feather keratin). These can all be identified in the ingredients lists on each product. Some of our lipsticks however may contain carmine, which gives it it’s red colour from carminic acid which is derived from insects.

    I'm guessing since she says they're in ingredient lists they're listed under the names given. I've never seen eggs or feather keratin listed on a product but I was asking specifically about hair dye and I haven't used a traditional box dye since I started using vegan products so those ingredients might be used in them.

    Ingredient lists can be confusing as hell though when it comes to cosmetics since, usually, I haven't the faintest idea what the vast majority of stuff listed is. I tend to buy stuff I can find on vegan lists or email companies if I can't find a vegan list. I don't own many cosmetics but the stuff I do use is mainly from Lush, ELF (all products are vegan except some brushes), Barry M (any vegan products have a V beside the ingredient list on their website) and Gosh (not completely vegan but they do have a good few vegan products. I found a list on a blog recently if you'd like me to send you it).

    There's whey so could go either way. I wish that they listed what type of cheese production the whey came from. I've seen it labelled as milk whey once but other than that it always just says whey. It's in so many things as well...

    I don't mind whey. If it doesn't explicitly list an ingredient as animal sourced or an ingredient I know is animal sourced I don't stress about it.

    I sort of mis-quoted something from earlier lectures, lol. Absorption doesn't have an actual limit, since nobody knows, but the useage/synthesis of that protein is capped at 20g/hr.

    I'm lifting heavy things now, yes! It's pretty fun so far :) And how are you? It's been quite a while since we've met/talked!

    Was wandering around my local supervalu looking for peanut butter today and happened across their healthfood section. I was pleasntly surprised to see how well stocked it was with non-dairy milks and a few other vegan bits. I would have expected that from the supervalus in town but I live in a fairly small village so did not think they would have much in. Made decide once my easter egg is gone the vegan transition starts. Starting to get excited now...

    Never did find any peanut butter though.
