Thats what i was hoping, looking for a PB.

No new PB, but a lesson learned i cant run 6.5x min miles into the wind:eek::eek:. Another 10km coming up in just over 3 weeks to have another go. I still finished 69th out of 1200 odd. The half marathon winner today ran 3 mins faster last year when he won to, so wind affects us all i suppose.

6 weeks to the start of training plan...How is everyone getting on...How are the people doing that are building up to the 3x3miles + 1x6mile getting on? Remember build it up slowly and do the runs slowly!!:)

Anyone starting off, week 7 of this plan will get you where you need to be for the start of the Marathon plan

My plan starts today, a slow 5k jog, going to be hard to keep the pace down as i've been doing 26min 5k training runs twice a week for the past 3 weeks.
This week plan is 5k jog, 8k jog, 5k jog and 8k comfortable run. Been doing similar for the past few weeks should be fine with that.

Rather clumsy start to the week but lessons learned ! Today was my LSR all be it only 5k.

    1) I changed runners. The new runners must have a different foot position / stance (don't know the technical term for it!) but bottom line was a pile of muscles in both legs that never hurt before were burning by 3k in. Had to stop and walk for a kilometre trying to loosen them up. Ended up running the last kilometre pushing through the pain. Seems I need to break these in / get used to them before attempting any longer distances.

    2) I failed to check all my equipment and missed something rather important - That something being that there was a hole developing in the back pocket of my shorts. So 5k later and with aching muscles from above I arrive home to find house key lost. :( So I ended up with the extra benefit of a couple of kilometres retracing my steps. Good news is key found :)

If the runners are no better after a few shorter runs, maybe check they are the correct ones for your gait. Where/how did you decide on the runners?

Glad you found the keys...We all learn something new on every run!!!

Nice time Tang1... I finished about two mins behind you... and about 60places!!
Was a really tough run. I thought it was meant to be a flat course. Didn't feel to flat to me!

Thanks snowman224, good running by you to. It was tough out there yesterday, the part on grass out in the Curragh plain was very up & down alright. Took it out of my legs bigtime.

It wasn't a very scientific process to be honest. They were selling running gear in Lidl last week. The runners seemed to be good quality for the price but they're not custom measured for me like a dedicated sports store might have done. That said my other runners aren't custom fitted either.

I know everyone is different, and i'm not the only one who may tell you this, but you will save yourself an untold amount of money getting correctly fitted for a pair of runners. I know from experience, was just buying standard cushioned runners that "i" thought were right for me, cue 2 years of shin splints. Got custom fitted last summer, injuries gone and visits to physio. As i said everyone is different, but i would advise you do it if DCM is your plan. See what others say.

Its the only part of running gear that you really need to make sure are the correct fit for your Gait. If you are still having problems after 3 or 4 runs in the runners they might not be supporting your foot in the correct way.

Wrong runners usually lead to injuries and unnecessary pain...

I noticed the Lidl runner last week. They have a lot of arch support. If you are a neutral runner (like me) they would certainly cause an injury.

It is definitely worth getting a Gait analysis and paying a few extra quid for your first pair of runners. I reccomend Amphibian King if you are in Dublin (they have stores in Ballymount and Bray).

Started my warm up to the marathon training 2 weeks ago, & all went to plan (3m+3pace+3+5LSR). Then last week I came down with the flu so no progress made :( But I think I'll be ready to get back to 3+3+3+6 tomorrow & looking forward to getting out there. Gotta keep my enthusiasm going!

Take it back nice and handy, don't worry too much if you dont get the 3 x3 and 1 x6 done this week. just do what you're able to do, you'll have no bother with the plan if you were up to 3x3 and 1 x5 so just make sure you are fully recovered!

Currently on week 7 of a Hal Higdon 30 week training programme. It's going ok so far, have only missed one or two short runs. I'm already 5 minutes faster over 4 miles than I was in March last year which is a surprise. Although to be honest, I'm not running based on pace, just purely based on feel. I just run along at what feels like a comfortable pace. The odd time my mind wanders and I speed up without realising it but it's rarely a problem and if I start finding it tough, I just slow the pace.

Training is going ok so far. I did a 4.5 mile run last Saturday around Deer Park in south dublin. Found it tough going at times as there's quite a few inclines, especially compared to where I normally run. But I couldn't really face doing 4.5 miles around a smaller park. Deer Park is good as it's exactly a 1 mile lap if you go around the outside.

If I was to run the marathon I'd be looking to do it in 4 hours.. should I be looking at doing the Novice 1 plan? It seems not alot of running for me. Would Novice 2 be okay to stick to?

    Hi all,
I am on the long road (literally) to my first marathon, and I thought I should start a discussion group on here for absolute Novice runners like me, who intend to finish a marathon in or around the 5 hour mark. Im slow and feel sometimes everyone else is so much faster than me! Currently Im running 11.20 to 11.30 min miles.
Any hints, tips, advice, discussions, fears, worries, blisters all welcome here.
    Anyone interested?
PS Im a 41 year old female

Quick question, I'm a pronate runner and I went into Elvery's on Saturday and got fitted with footbalance insoles to help correct my feet and ankles. Has anyone ever used them before? I find now when I'm running with them that the bottom of my shin and ankle are now very tight and take some stretching to get rid of the pain.

Or can anyone recommend good stretches for that part of the leg?

Not being nosy, but why were you told you needed these insoles? What did they do to determine that you needed them for running?

What runners were you wearing before you bought these and did you have any issues with them?

I'm wearing Asics runners, not sure of the model. They have instep support and I didn't have issues with them, just sore shins/calves when I go back to running after a long break but that passes after I get back into the rhythm. Thanks.

Missed a 2 mile run yesterday morning due to going to bed too late the night before. Aimed to do it this morning instead, same fecking story!

Am back running 3-4 times a week a nice 3 miles this morning before breakfast. Have the Lucan 5k at the weekend so looking forward to that and then on to building up my LSR at the weekends.

No worries, you're not being nosy at all!

I went into Elvery's and they scanned an image of my lower legs and feet (they would have done the gait analysis but they suggested this) and they said that the insoles would help with how my legs & feet hit the ground. My feet roll in as I have fallen arches and they said the support would help! With them in, the alignment of my ankles and lower legs looks straight.

Sara +1 on this question. In general Elvery's wouldn't have the largest selection of runners and tend to recommend Asics and insoles. (I run in Asics myself so not knocking them!). Would it be an option for you to go to a more specialised store as I would be skeptical on the insoles advice i.e. AmphibianKing or Runways etc.

Apparently they try to sell those insoles to everyone and only a very small % of the population would need them. My advice is that if the insoles give you any pain, ditch them and either go back to the shoes you were wearing before or go get a proper gait analysis in a more reputable running shop such as Amphibian king, Runways etc.

The Asics that I'm running in are my own runners from a few months ago that I didn't buy in Elverys. I only got the insoles there. I think he was worried I was running in neutral runners and that's why I was getting occasional shin pains. I can't feel much of a gap between the arch support in my asics and the insoles. I have a month to try them out.

The only pain I'm getting from them is a very tight feeling in my lower legs, basically where my calf goes into my foot. I wonder is that due to the insoles or just my leg being weird and it's only on one foot. Thanks for your help.

Sara, try out the runners with the insoles for 2/3 more runs and see if there is any difference, then remove them and do 2/3 runs to see if you have any problems....its possible you have shin splints, which would be common for poeple starting off running or increasing distances....I suffered with them myself before and its not nice. stretch the shins as best you, especially after running, by stretching the foot away from you and elongating the shin....it is possible to run through them but its not very comfortable..not sure if its recommended!!

i was recommended Asics GT2160s but couldn't wear them running at all...I went to Amphibian King and they are fab...I got Saucony runners and they are so much better!
