    sportlines?

I actually cancelled the order and I'm undecided between those and H&Rs. But no, they were Pro Kit rather than sportlines.

The Eibachs were actually 30mm drop and H&R are 40mm. I have read reports on forums of tyre rubbing with the H&Rs so I'm still looking into it.

No! 2 reasons - I can't afford them and from what I've read, they make the ride quality very bad in the MPS ;)

Depends on the quality of the coilover. I was driving around on Racing Spec coilovers and the ride was perfectly fine. Driving around on cheaper coilovers I felt like somebody was taking a jackhammer to my back

If you can find coilovers for my car at a price I can afford, I will look into it!

So far I haven't even found a site that sells them for my car!

On a more positive note I got my Passat back after it's brake issues. One of the motors had seized i the rear caliper.

No bill yet so I'm not totally depressed with cars....

I feel your pain, I have to sell some of my collection in due time, I'm literally running out of space for all these cars :(

Today, however, I opened up my van only to be met with an unholy smell of mould  the jap plate was going rusty and the tax disc holder was filled with water!!!

So I gave it a damned good cleaning inside and out :) I can't get on the ramps with the bumper on...

    Image0959.jpg

I can't figure out how to clean the inside of the lens without taking the glass off...

Space isn't even the issue. I've literally become pissed off with the amount of work I put in only to have HGF diagnosed today.

I took a day off from correcting my students exams to sort it all out sand then got the bad news

It's all the more annoying as I had all the parts ready to fit.

Anyway the parts are all there and hopefully it'll all be gone by the weekend and I can pay for the repairs to the Passat. Real life sucks.

For anyone who may be interested the car never boiled hence it may actually not be HGF but it looks very much like it is

Is it too much to have a go at it yourself?

Time and money really.............and knowledge and tools

I wouldn't have a clue really. It wouldn't be too easy for me to lift the car and drop the engine and rear subframe out. It's just too much work for me really as I live in Wicklow. I know it wouldn't get done if I'm honest

Have you priced it up in a garage? What I'm saying is what's the car worth as a runner? Would it be worth more than what your asking plus the repair cost?

    No.

It's worth something to someone who has the skill to repair it at home or else needs a donor car. The parts to go with it are the desirable bits as is the roof.

It would cost a nice bit to get a good engine, change the head gasket to an MLS one and then have the old engine removed and a new one fitted. To someone who has the skill it wouldn't be difficult really but as I'd have to pay for it all it wouldn't make sense.

TBF it was a very nice car when it was working. If I got a good price for the car I may be tempted to keep the parts and get another one but at the minute I'd like it all gone and I'll return to classic cars which I'm happier working on

Did you try Keith at Alloywheels.ie?

He sells JOM coilovers, Have a sety on the Toledo and to be honest they are no stiffer than the original setup

No, didn't even come to mind! I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have them though. It's such a rare car and parts that were readily available all over the world for the RX8 are few and far between for the MPS. Not much of a market for parts really.

Its the spring rates and the bound/rebound adjustment that will effect the ride quality, not the brand of coilover.

The low cost coilovers like JOM mentioned above have no bound/rebound adjustment and the ride height is adjusted from the spring platform so the lower you go, they harder they get. These are fine if you just want the stance or felt spec look but for something like the mps you'd need decent fully adjustable units.

Thanks ND. This is why I am not going to go cheapo when it comes to things like this along with the fact that you get what you pay for.

I can't afford the £STG700+ to get proper ones so I just re-ordered the Eibach springs for the time being. I just want to lower the car, not to a felt-spec level but to a desirable-looking level.

I thought the leak stopped when you replaced the gasket John?
Best of luck with the sale though, without an interior though and without it starting unfortunately I think it might take a week or two for the right buyer to come along.

It flooded the cylinder again today when I tried to start it. I had tested it last week after putting it in and all seemed fine so I've no idea what has happened or where it's all gone wrong.

As for selling I'd like to have it gone asap as I won't be around to sell it apart from Saturdays after the weekend but who knows how long it'll really take to sell.....if it sells at all

Did levels on the e46 its going through a lot of coolant and oil. Dip stick has a bit of mayo on it. Cap is fine. Is this dreaded head gasket issues starting to develop?

They are very prone to external leaks, both coolant and oil so it may not be the head gasket.

You'd need to get it properly diagnosed before it does cause any damage.

Expansion tank has been replaced before and new rad as well a stone bust the other one. Car never overheats. What is the name of the test for head gasket? Block test or something like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,721 ✭✭✭E39MSport

You giving it decent runs or short warm ups? Might just be a condensation build up.
