Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry for the hijack but I've no log to post in so just gonna slap it in here.......

Think Im still in shock over what happened yesterday. I trained like a beast for this marathon, some of the things that I put myself through I dunno, I questioned my own sanity on more than one occasion. My body took a battering but it was a calculated battering because as the months went by I found myself getting stronger and stronger. Confidence was sky high, I knew I could nail a good one. However 10 days before the marathon, in what was to be the last session of significance on the program I was following(daniels)I strained my right calf muscle. Nothing major but enough to concern me. Got it treated and didnt run for 5 days, felt it get better so I was back in the game, albeit a bit concerned about whether or not senor calf would hold up.

Anyway enough waffling, its all about the racing. Lined up alongside heffsarmy and off we went. Crusing along at a very very conmfortable pace. After the torture I'd put myself through in training this felt like jogging. Went through 5 miles in 30mins dead so all was going great. The calf was behaving itself and I was starting to think that this was gonna be a great day. But as we headed out of the park through teh chapleizod gate my hamstring gave me a jolt. I thought nothing of it, **** like that always happens to me in races or training. But the hammer started to tighten as time went by. Went through 10 miles in 59xx so all still fine. Felt great, was straining at the lead to let it rip, but I held back and bided my time like I said I would. Pain in the hammer didnt get any worse so I thought I'd gotten away with it, so now I could forget about it and concentrate on racing. We made the turn onto the crumlin road which is a tough drag, but I felt fine. Heff was alongside me still and seemed to be crusing too. We were churning out a nice clip on this stretch, passing a fair few runners as we went along. We were catching those that had set off too fast at the begining and all was looking good. But then as we came down the hill towards the turn left that led up towards superquinn(halfway)the hammer gave out on me. Literally I went from running at 5:50 pace to hobbling in a matter of yards. I couldnt believe it, no way could this happen. So I ignored it as best as I could hoping it would just go away and tried to continue on. I got to the halfway mark and I corssed it in 78 mins but I had to pull off the road as my hammer was gone completely. Vinney muulvey, fair play to him, came running over to me and tried to help me out. I got tried to get going again but I made it to the walkinstown roudabout and that was it, hammer was screaming at me and I couldnt run, had to step off the road again but this time I knew it was game over. My mate was there at the roundabout so he helped me to his car and gave me a lift home. I went back in to town to collect my gear and arrived just in time to see the sub 3 hour lads come through. It was hilarious. I've never been on the other side of a marathon, watching form the sidelines so it was an experience. There were guys coming in and they'd literally stop dead with 250m to go!! I couldnt beleive it, how could that happen???? One guy stopped and everybody shouted at him, there was a dude with a bullhorn and everything trying to get him going again. And he did get going again, which was greeted with a massive roar from the crowd. It was inspirational stuff.......but then he collapsed in a heap after shuffling about 10meters. Cue stunned silence from crowd.
Saw the roadrunner come through with a big ass sub 3:00 baloon stuck to his hand. He seemed to be pretty much on his own but then a few lads who looked in an absolute jock came trailing in his wake. Great stuff.

Like I said Im still in shock about the injury. Stuff like that happens to other people. I never thought I would have to pull out of a marathon. Its my worst nightmare come true. Which I suppose is a good thing, I mean if you experience your worst fear then theres nothing to be afraid of. Anyway I went to the physio and the official diagnosis is a grade II semitendonosis strain. He reckons I'll be back running in 2-3weeks, which isnt bad at all. But its not the physical scars Im worried about..........I'll go again next year, and I'll keep going until I get what I want from that marathon, no two ways about it. But its a bitter pill to swallow, I put my heart and soul into trainning for that race and to have something as random as my hammer go is just cruel. But I suppose thats life, it can be cruel and random and all you can do is pick yourself up and go again.

I have to say a few words about the guy I trained with, Phil kilgannon. I'll try not get overly sentimental, but Phil is probably the most decent, most honest and honourable bloke I've ever had the privilage of knowing. Men like him are very few and far between. I can honestly say that if I ever had to go into battle he would be the guy I'd want at my side. It was an honour. Cheers dude.

and he ran 2:33, not bad at all, unlucky tunguska but love the positivity.

Thanks for posting that, that really makes me feel good now. When I crossed the line with only a handful of guys around me, I wasn't sure if I had provided any real help to anyone.

    Thank you, very much appreciated.

Thomas you, and the other pacers, were a massive help to me also.
For the last 4 miles all I saw were those yellow balloons. There's no way I would have broken 3.30 otherwise. I shook your hand at the finish but thanks again. Sorry I didn't make it to the pub to buy you all a pint.

First marathon, ran 3.27, no way without the pacers... I ran at about 3.20 pace til the half way mark, but found crumlin to terenure fierce tough. I was caught by the first 3.30 pacer at about terenure and watched them go ahead, but I dug in so much and ran with them until the N11. I knew the lungs would hold up but just hoped the legs would keep ticking over, anyway I pushed hard and made it home. If I was depending on the watch and no pacer or balloon or any sort of marker, there's no way I would have been able to focus enough to get home under 3.30. So thanks a load. I'm guessing it TBFubendorfer, i was talking to you briefly in milltown, black cap red vest.

I was debating or not to start in the 3.15 or 3.30 group at the start line. I signed up for the 2.45 - 3.30 thinking that they all started at the same time, I didn't realise that 3.30 started 5 mins after. I knew I would need a pacer, and figured that if I dropped behind 3.15, and was caught by the 3.30, I'd have lost 15+5 minutes, so went with 3.30 - pity the ranking isn't based on RealTime but it's not the end of the world. Onwards and upwards...

3:41:09 - Apart from my very first, this was approx. 20 mins. slower than previous worst. I found the heat & humidity tough and cut back on my target time very early on, resetting (from 3:15) to 3:20, but started cramping from 14 or so - same leg as last year! I'm sore everywhere today - can't remember ever feeling as bad. After I finished yesterday, I cramped, simultaneously, in my right calf, right hamstring and right buttock!:eek::eek: I don't ever want to feel that again!! .........nevertheless, a previous post reminded me that I still made a Boston qualifying time in my category, so maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself.

.....licking my wounds, but already analysing what went wrong, and planning for 2012!

The one thing that p1ssed me off on the day was the amount of people who threw bottles into ditches, hedges, gardens etc. (although I was too preoccupied to say anything). What is the point in that ? Why not throw them in the gutter where they can be easily collected ?

And another thing: don't they teach English in schools anymore ? The amount of signs that said "your great" or "your the best". Seriously ?

Found it very humid yesterday and found it very tough going from mile 12 - 15, legs were very tired and hurting in places they had never hurt before...then something happened in mile 15, might have been something to do with the crowds and calling my name, as it was on my top, but i just relaxed into the running and things got a bit easier for me.

IT band problem kicked in at mile 18 but thankfully i remember the 2 nurofen i had, took these and kept going...turned out onto dual carriage way and i just really started to try and pick up the pace, mile 25, 26 and the .2(.5 on garmin) were my fastest miles

Got over the line in 4:26:12, so delighted with that. That 15mins faster than last year. Thats my garmin time and I’m sticking with that as my chip is not on either the marathon site or the timing site...it gives a reading until halfway on the timing site and then I disappear!!!

Overall i enjoyed the day, hated the coldness after the race from being so wet, but there is nothing we can do about the weather...thinking there might be a 4.14.59 in there somewhere:D

Great to meet some of you after the race in the pub...i enjoyed a few drinks when i got home last night and went for a 2m stroll with the kids today and the legs are ok, but maybe tomorrow it will be a different story!!!!

Hi all - I've been a keen follower of this thread over recent months but this is my first contribution. Dublin 2011 was my second marathon after Cork earlier this year and managed to cut my time from 4h 09m to 3h 38m so was well pleased. However, it would seem that there was a problem with my chip as there is no record of my finishing time on the marathon site and the tds site has a record of me at all of the time points up to, but excluding, the finishing line (despite visual evidence of me passing the finsihing line over Jerry Kiernan's shoulder on RTE Realplayer!). While I have all of the imporant info on my Garmin, it would be nice to have an official time. Have sent an email to the 'infomation' email address on the Dublin site but no response as yet...any suggestions or is it a lost cause?

This was my first marathon. I religiously followed the P&d 18 week 55 mile program but I screwed up my right hamstring 2 before the race. I tried everything to fix it up but I wasn’t able to train at all and was full sure I couldn’t do the marathon. I only went up to Dublin because my Girlfriend was running too. I registered on the Sunday pretty sure that I probably wouldn’t be picking up a medal on Monday. I got talking to a guy at the expo form the Clonakilty marathon stand and told him my dilemma He told me I wouldn’t be getting any sympathy there and too man up and run!

I woke up on race day feeling terrible and told my other half I wasn’t going to it. She said to at least start, I had nothing to loose. So I started with her and popped some painkillers before setting off. The leg felt painful starting and got progressively worse. I remember being in agony around 4 miles. Then in the phoenix park some guy barged past I fell to the ground. The next few miles were terrible. I found it so hard to run. But then around mile 9 I started to feel a little better. The GF told me to push on. I was following the 4 hr pacers. I couldn’t believe I was still running. I ran by the pacers and tried to build up a bit of a cushion for a sub 4 hour time. Miles 19- 25 were harder. My leg was getting sore again and I popped more tablets. I got a second wind coming into the city and managed to finish strong.

I was so happy crossing the line in 3 hrs 58 mins. I can’t believe I finished. My girlfriend was amazing in the early stages (She finished in 4:22). The pacers were great, the crowds were unreal, they helped so much. There was such a good atmosphere. Even though it was painful running it was impossible not smile. I loved the signs and all the kids’ high fiving.

I can’t wait for my next marathon. A few things I learned from this one:
    • Respect the distance. 26.2 miles is a lot or running. My initial goal was optimistic and I don’t know if I could have made it even if I wasn’t injured.
    • I wouldn’t recommend the P&D program for a first time marathoner.
    • Listen to your body. It ok to miss a session here and there.
    • I'd substitute some cross training maybe once a week for a recover run.
    • Stretch, there is no point starting to stretch after after you get injured

Congratulations to everyone who achieved their goals yeaterday and hopefully those who didn't do as well as they wished are planning their next race already.
My 7th marathon and it definitely does get easier...Garmin showed 3.34.35 as I crossed the line. 5 weeks ago I wouldn't have thought I could have topped the feelings of joy I felt in Berlin but yesterday was out of this world:D:D a massive PB for me but what I'll remember most from DCM 2011 was the support from the crowds, I loved every minute of this race.

And I made it onto the cover of the Irish Examiner and again on page 3 today. My husband reminded me that since I've started running I've lost weight EVERYWHERE so I'm not exactly page 3 material:eek:

He ran a fantastic first marathon in 3.43, crossed the line with our 13 year old son and couldn't believe how emotional he was.
He says he finally understands why I love running so much... I reminded him that I am always right;)

Well done everyone who participated, whether walking, jogging, running or flipping flying (like the elites). We were on the Kimmage Road (near the two girls with the signs) and I had a sign to encourage 3 workmates who all completed the distance. Apart from shouting encouragement at them, my wife, kids & I were shouting "encouragement" at everyone else - hopefully it wasn't too annoying and if you happened to have your name on your shirt you didn't mind me personalising the encouragement! :o And if it wasn't your name, it might have been a club that I knew, that I'd recognised you from races in Wexford or that I saw you wearing a Boards top. Basically any excuse at all. Anyway, well done. I'll link my photos when I get a chance.

Have to say I was seriously impressed with the amount of support from people as we all passed, alot of work gone into some very creative signs and I noticed the same chap twice in two different locations with the obligatory "Careful Now!" sign :)

Lots of kids out supporting us as well which was great, great to see so many get into the whole event be in just cheering people on, looking to high 5 people as they passed or handing out jelllys.

I think it says alot when you see so many people out cheering in the city for several hours, made a great atmosphere :)

Anyone know what the story is with getting a certificate downloaded?
Tried this morning but its not working - first time doing Dublin since '96 (no chip/certs back then :D) so would like to get my cert but does it usually take a few days...

My photos are dreadful as i always get caught side on or just in part of a shot.

See that The Irish Times have a nice slideshow of the marathon including the pacers and you can play 'spot the Vaggabond in the Boards jersey' if you've the times.

Been so busy with various things I never got around to posting a link to the photos on RacePix here.

All in all there's over 6,000 there (that makes it the most photos from a race on RacePix to date!). The photos that appear on RacePix can be added by absolutely anyone with a camera, so there's all different sorts of photos there - a few boardsies put theirs up as well (dodgeykeeper, xebec, woddle, daymobrew...).

Just over a third of them can be searched by bib number. If you spot a photo of yourself it'd be great if you could add the bib number to the photo and the other numbers in shot. That way it makes it easier for others looking for photos (there's less photos in the untagged photos collection and the other people in your shot will be able to find themselves by searching by bib number)

If anyone has any photos that they want added just let me know - currently RacePix.com performs searches for photos on flickr, picasa and zenfolio.

Same problem for me 3pointer except i disappear from the record at 13.1...i think i will email in a day or two if not fixed... I wan tmy finishers certifiecate!!!:D Sorry i ahve no idea how to get it fixed except emailing them

I must say I'm cheesed off with this too. My time on the website is 3 or 4 minutes wrong (thankfully its too fast rather than too slow as I came 3 mins under my target - 3/4 mins wrong the other way and I'd be like a bear). My splits are all over the shop. On my Garmin I did first 10 k in 52mins, on splits I did it in 39 mins - thus taking 7 mins off my personal best for 10k! Seriously though its not good enough. I've never done Dublin before but I've done Cork twice and both times I had an email / text from the organisers with my chip time within an hour of finishing. Its the least you'd expect............

4:04:11. Very happy with the time for my first one. Was on pace for a Sub 4 but the fatigue after 18 miles prevented that. The support from the RDS all the way in was phenomenal. Ran it in the Vibrams too. Onward and Downwards* for Cork next June.

    * timewise that is :pac:

I saw you on Nassau St. and didn't know whether to shout your real or boards name and then you were gone. I knew you were in a happy place heading for a PB.

In fairness you were giving as much if not more encouragement to the crowd as they were giving you.

Well done to you and your husband - looks like you're gonna have some competition at home.

If you are 3-4 minutes faster on the website, it's likely that the chip failed and you started in the wave in front of the one you were supposed to. You have been given the guntime of the wave you were supposed to start in.

The '10k' split on the website is actually your 5 mile split. The '30k' split is actually your 20 mile split.

Well done marthastew, great improvement on Berlin and you're now Boston Qualified :D Pass my congrats on to the Husband as well.

When I actually came in in 3' 58" on my watch. Do you think the chip time will be adjusted to allow for the delay in crossing the start line.

Must admit I did not like the narrow street the Green Group were sent down for the start line.

Sorry to sound a bit thick but I've noticed a few posts along this theme.

Does this mean that the chip times were just saying 9:55/10:00 to chip finish time rather than chip start time to chip finish time????

Confused! I find it kind of hard to believe that a timing company would post times that way.

I believe your assumption is correct. I ran DCM in '09 as well and I think the same thing happened but in time it was corrected to chip start time instead of race start time.

Can anyone confirm / clarify situation?

Just wondering were you wearing a watch with auto pause on?

I had the same problem or so I thought. My chip time was over a minute slower than my watch time. Couldn’t figure it out for ages until I coped on that I stopped twice to take a leak and every time I stopped the watch stopped too. The correct time is your chip time. Sorry

The chip time should exactly reflect the time you started at. Your chip time and race time should not be equal, unless you started at the very front of the pack, which it doesn't sound like you did.

If you didn't start at the very front Race Time should always be greater than Chip time. It seems to be a big problem for lots of people this year that Race Time = Chip Time, which isn't correct...

This seems to have a lot to do with the chips being timed to go off with the wave times. If someone goes off in an earlier wave than they were supposed to then as they crossed the start line their chip was not activated then but it was activated immediately when their wave started about 5 minutes afterwards. I think this is the reason that so many have race times equal to chip times as their times would have started being recorded exactly as their wave started regardless of whether they were a half mile down the road or not. My best guess anyway :o

    I forsee an issue.

I paid an extra €5 when registering to have a time sent out to me to be fitted into the back of the medal, any odds on whether or not this will be right?

You get a deal if you register for some or all of the race series with it. Don't think that's open yet :)

Great race overall, but in the spirit of constructive criticism :)...

    - Chip timing not working properly for some
    - Splits wrongly labelled (5 mile/10k, 30k/whatever it was really)
    - water stations running out/shutting down before later runners got there

    Two from me
    - some sections of the course are just too narrow. Crumlin road seemed to be narrower this year? and other sections were really tight. With the numbers increasing every year this is just going to get worse unless there's a change to the route or we can use more of the road
    - there weren't any signs counting down the distance at the end. I could really have used them :o, but they'd also have been handy for the tv commentators working out when the elites were going to finish

    any others?
