Yes, just wait until 10.7.2 or .3 is out. And make sure all your apps still work or have been updated for Lion before installing.

Well, the only problem with that is that to get the free upgrade you have to take it within something like 6 weeks of buying the computer. So it's a question of whether not having to put up with the teething problems is worth €25 to the OP.

You don't have to install it.

    Is it worth updating?

I haven't had the same problems at the other guys, a few fullscreen bugs and a finder crash last night but my system is otherwise rock solid after the Lion update.

That said, there aren't many must have features for me so I could take or leave Lion really (Apart from some updated stuff for developers).

    I absolutely love Lion

Gestures are fanstastic, as are fullscreen apps. Launchpad hasn't been getting much use - it's pretty but most of my apps are on the dock so I just launch from there.

It has not crashed and the only impact was that I unplugged my hard drive from Airport Extreme that I was using as my Time Machine and plugged directly into my Cinema Display. (Apple claim now never to have supported this setup despite using it as a selling point for the Extreme). At least backups work faster as are no longer OTA.

The extra security is most welcome as in this day and age you can never have enough security.

    I'm on a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro

I've had no technical trouble either apart from having to update Java and AFP being borked. I can use SMB in the meantime.

It took a little bit of fiddling about to get gestures how I like them, especially for navigating pages in FireFox. Mission Control and App Exposé as four fingers up and down is quite nice.

I like a lot of the new features in Safari such as smooth zooming and flipping back and forward through pages but I find it cumbersome in general so I'll stick to FF5 for now.

Being able to add desktops on the fly, and with unique wallpapers, is also nice.
I've also re-enabled natural scrolling and I've gotten used to it.
Three finger tap to search is great in Preview/TeXShop etc.
Proper window resizing is also welcome.

I'm not overly excited by the more muted colour scheme.
Launchpad is a waste of space.
The novelty of fullscreen apps has worn off too. I just close the Mail window and open it from the dock if I need it.

I would like to disable resume in selected apps.
It's great when I open TeXShop and I can continue where I left off but it's a pain in the hole when I open a paper in Preview and it throws up the previous paper I had opened since I forget to cmd option Q it.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but just be aware of the issues people are having.

I dont know if sandboxing would be classified as important for most people and increased security improvements is also important if not very obviously important to most people.

The more I look at Lion the more I think I will wait to .1 release wipe my drive, partition it and run Lion and see how I find it and install Ubuntu 11.04 as multi boot (I may as well add win7 too) and move to that if Lion is as bad as I think it will be.

    = beta release
at least its supposed to be.

Comparing this release to Snow Leopard release is not a valid comparison. It has more akin to windows vista.
Apple dropped the ball on this one if you ask me.

This should be Beta, but it is not. See thats the problem, Apple don't follow guidelines. This shouldn't be a first release, it is still beta but it is released as a final product.

Comparing it to the first release of snow leopard is perfectly acceptable.

Ive claimed the redeem code from the apple site but havent updated yet.

Id like to test it on a mates mac before I update it myself. Too much hassle with downgrading.

Anybody else having problems with iCal? I've two that I noticed. When adding an event, it doesn't let me put in all the details, just the title and it automatically sets it as an all day event, I have to go back after creating it and edit in order to be able to add the details (time, place, which calendar, notes, etc). Also, even worse, when I create an event on my MacBook Pro (which has Lion), it doesn't send it to my other devices (it still receives new events that are created on the other devices). When I go into settings, Calendars are now separated from MobileMe, but they don't allow me to edit anything to do with syncing. (I use MobileMe for syncing everything, including calendars btw).

Got enough crashes that I've been using Win 7 on my Macbook the past few days to get a break from it.

And when I rebooted into OSX I got treated to three system crashes in a row. Joy.

I’m pleased to report that I haven’t had a crash in over 72 hours. This is the longest uptime my Mac has had since installing Lion. Prior to this I was getting on average 12-18 hours before the spinning-beach-ball-of-death caused my whole system to lock-up. As I suspected, it seems VMWare and its kernel extensions were the problem. Had I done a proper clean install rather than migrating my user account and apps over I wouldn’t have had this issue. Or if it had occurred to me to check the kernel extensions sooner.

So anyone encountering stability issues that aren’t related to the previously mentioned Flash or Nvidia driver problem (both of which only seem to affect certain Macs) should check out what third party kernel extensions are running on their system. You can do this by typing the following into Terminal:
    kextstat | grep -v com.apple

And of course you can also check your login items in System Prefs > Users.

I generally don’t like anything running in the background that isn’t essential. If Apple added a way to block all third party software from installing kernel extensions, login items and other background processes I’d use it. The Mac App Store already rejects apps that do this and rightly so IMO. The developers moaned endless about it, but nearly every major stability problem I’ve ever encountered in OS X (with the exception of Cheetah) has been down to dodgy third party software.

I've been using Lion on my Macbook and iMac since just after the launch. Lion looks good and is more streamlined (I love full screen) but I think the upgrade makes the most difference if you have a touchpad, gestures and Safari. It's makes less of a difference to iMac users, particularly me I don't use the Magic Mouse (it gave me RSI).

I haven't had any crashes but then I regularly shut down my two machines. The only real annoyance is that there's more than a few apps I use that either don't work properly or at all e.g SRS iWow, CouchPotato etc. Roaringapps.com has a list of what works and what doesn't has a good list for those considering an upgrade.

I like Mission control and Airdrop is nifty but Launchpad has to be the most pointless addition to OS X to date. I use and love Alfred and I know Google Quick Search Box and Quicksilver provide similar functions which are far more useful than Launchpad. TBH even hitting command+space is a quicker way to launch an app.

Lion will get better when Apple launch iCloud but until then I have Dropbox. It'll also benefit from 10.7.2 which has already been seeded to developers. For those who have have upgraded but miss Snow Leopard's GUI features see here: http://lifehacker.com/5829787/lion-tweaks-fixes-common-annoyances-in-apples-latest-os

I remember SL as being probably the least problematic of all Apple's OS releases.

Many people experienced data loss during the install and there was numerous Finder, wifi and sleep related issues. It also broke SMB and never fully fixed it. 10.6.0 was a very disappointing release considering it was supposed to consist mostly of bug fixes. Many people didn't have issues, but many don't have issues with 10.7.0 either. SL was a pretty typical .0 release IMO.

I had a weird issue with sound that I have finally managed to resolve. It seems I wasnt the only one. I cant 100% say it was a Lion issue but I havent installed or being doing anything out the ordinary that would trigger it.

Essentially my sound went and I had to go into the Audio MIDI setup in Utilities and select the correct speakers for output.

I have seen other threads with people have problems with flash audio.

Either way both issues are easily fixed. But I did have a moment of manic when it first occured!!

It's similar on my iMac, it's just my MacBook that's been giving me problems. 10.7 seems either to work flawlessly or be a nightmare at the moment.

Installed over Leopard. Only gave problems on machine with NVidia card. I seriously doubt there would be an improvement with a clean install if the main problem is a driver based one.

Bleh, I'm considering reverting back to Snow Leopard, except it'll be a real pain in the neck to do so.

Have you tried turning off automatic graphics switching in Energy Saver prefs? It's supposed to fix some freezing issues on Macs with discrete GPUs.

I'll give it a go but had gfxstatus set to Integrated only which should have covered that.

Automatic graphics switching was turned off but I had power source switching turn on in gfxCardstatus so I've turned that off to see if it helps at all. I'm sceptical though.
