I'm still experiencing crashes here. The whole system starts beachballing and I have to force restart. I'm making one last effort to narrow down the problem and then I'm downgrading to Snow Leopard. Is anyone else having a lot of crashes? I can't find anything on Google and whatever the problem is it's not being recorded in the logs.

Got enough crashes that I've been using Win 7 on my Macbook the past few days to get a break from it.

    I haven't had a single issue on my mid 2010 13" MBP.

Do you have a machine with an Nvidia card? See my previous post above.

I have a cheap mp3 player (not iPod) that is not showing anywhere when I plug it in. Prior to installing Lion, it showed up no problem (on desktop, in disk utility etc) even when using the keyboard usb port.

    Any suggestions please?

You should see it in /Volumes.
type "ls /Volumes" in a terminal to list the folder contents.
Are there any settings in the mp3 player to make it a mass storage device? Does it work on other machines still?

It has a Nvidia yeah, but it's the earlier 2009 MBP, not the 2010 one that seems to have the problem. And that graphics issue seems to be causing kernel panics, which isn't my problem. I wish it was causing kernel panics because then at least I'd be able to find some evidence of it in the logs. If Lion has a problem with 2009 MBPs as well then nobody is reporting it.

I've had more crashes since upgrading to Lion than I've had in the 10 years since OS X was released.

    You know it makes sense!

Is it possible to ssh into the machine when it's beachballing? The UI may have frozen but you may be able to see what causing the issues remotely.

I don't really know how to do that.

Freezes and beachballs of doom. Varies.

I don't really know how to do that.

    It's easy enough.
You need two ssh capable machines. Two macs would be ideal or your mac and a linux machine.

On your Mac open a terminal and type
    hostname

This will return the network hostname of the machine.

Then on the other machine open a terminal and type
    ssh username@hostname

Where username is your account username.
You'll be asked to type yes/no to add this new address and then your password to log in. You can then use the "top" command to list the running processes to see what's crashing.

You can even ssh into your Mac from your Mac, kinda pointless (unless you're logging in as root) but I nice way to check it's working.

Thanks, 5uspect. I'll try that next time.

Im starting to find Lion a bit slow now after a few weeks. I havent had any crashes but i do find it at times slow. I running on 4gb RAM, 2ghz processor.

I did a clean up over the weekend and ran a few onyx processes.

I find for the first time ever since getting a mac, i have to close iTunes if im using a program that is bit more usage heavy.

Now I must stress, im not throwing the iMac at the wall, but it is running slower than it did with SL. Slightly.
Presumably however the first update to Lion might address these performance issues.

It just shows the mac harddrive and my usb backup drive- no mp3.

    I'm not sure- I don't think so?
I haven't changed any settings on it. Showed up fine on SL. No sign since installing Lion.

Does it work on other machines still?
Yes, shws up fine on windows pc.

Aha! It appears it could be a problem with NVidia drivers in Lion according to Ars Technica: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbook-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars

Apparently it's what's responsible for at least some of the system freezes and kernel panics. I have had crashes when switching from integrated to discrete graphics on a 2010 Macbook 15" which lends some support to the idea.

My MBP doesn't have a discrete GPU, so this driver issue isn't the cause of my problems. Unless Lion has problems with integrated NVidia cards as well.

I had another crash yesterday. Usually the system is already locked up when I get to it, but this time I got to it as it was happening. Once again it started with the WiFi dropping. I tried turning it on and off but it refused to reconnect to my network. Interestingly, Airport Utility wouldn't launch while this was happening. Then gradually the rest of the system began to freeze up.

I was looking at the kernel extensions and the only 3rd party ones were vmnet, which VMWare uses to bridge its virtual machines to your network. I've uninstalled them. Just have to wait and see now if that fixes it.

Just discovered that since Apple don't refer to Wifi as Airport in OS X any more you may need to change Internet Sharing settings from Airport to Wifi as the settings may not port during an update.

I've also noticed that my MBP won't sleep while Internet Sharing is turned on.

Has anyone noticed Lion's Automatic Termination feature? I was reading about it on Gruber earlier. Try opening TextEdit, close the window, then click into another app. TextEdit automatically quits. Even if you working on a document in TextEdit, the system would eventually quit it to give resources to other apps. Your progress would then be restored upon reopening the app.

Home sharing is flaky for me despite everything else working fine around my machines and home network. There is definitely some issue in wifi and bonjour that is beyond me to nail down. Since deleting all network connections on all my home gadgets and mac then assigning static ips and then then recreating the network connections stability has improved. There is a conflict somewhere that might explain your wifi drops and then kernel panic.

    Is it worth updating?

    No.

I would give my left nut to go back to snow leopard.

Yes, just wait until 10.7.2 or .3 is out. And make sure all your apps still work or have been updated for Lion before installing.

"As it stands, you can't move apps from one workspace to another if they're not on your active desktop. You also can't move an app from one monitor's active Space to a Space on another monitor.
    "

"But why oh why can you not loop from the back of the row to the front, and vice versa?"

    Have these changed?

I hope there is a "Defaults write com.apple.bringbacktheoldspaces" or something like that around.
