"unlike Vodafone", were you sitting in the board room when they decided that? Every network so far has had to agree to the Apple terms, if they wanted the iPhone.

I didn't have to. Vodafone were quite vocal on the subject of not giving Apple a percentage of their monthly bills.

It's a given, in July or August next when Apple launch iPhone II this will all seem so ridiculous and it will start again, rip off tariffs, mad purchase prices yada yada.
Could you elaborate on this. Why will the fact that we are getting ripped-off now seem ridiculous in July and how is that relevant to the here and now?

It's called Mobiles & PDAs, I'm allowed to express an opinion on the subject matter.

Firstly, I did not mean to dispute with you on what you could or could not say, I apologise it came across that way. My point is that that not for the first time the hype has taken over, when everyone can see far enough down the line that this device will be replaced with a better and more appropriate device for the European market, and when that happens the Mark I will be coming free with corn flakes!.This device does not have 3G or HSDPA, which the European market is used to and expects,at this stage.Already, Apple's share price has been hit because of serious shortcomings on the uptake of the device in Europe. In a normal world (!?) they would have launched with a European version, but the frenzy was there , leading up to Christmas and they took advantage of it.
FYI, from where I sit, I know Voda would have taken the device with both hands had they been given an opportunity, but they weren't.;)

No way in hell am I getting this. Very poor value. I like the phone but O2 are just taking the mick with their price plans.

Why post to say you are not buying it, like your protest is going to make a difference or something? It will sell and has been stated before the reaction to the pricing is way over the top. What did people expect? The pricing of the device fits with the other launches and the priceplans fit with what we are used to in Ireland.

Did you think O2 and Apple were going to sell it to you for 129EUR with 20EUR priceplan and unlimited data?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

There's no sense in putting your head in the sand. Yes, it is a rip off in both terms of the price O2 are charging for the phone and the price plans, compared to other regions. The phone is only slightly overpriced so it's not a massive deal, but there can be up to 2000 minutes less for the same price. That's ridiculous.

Eh, have you read this thread? Its more expensive than similiar o2 prices plans in ireland and the tarriffs are more expensive here than in the UK (taking VAT in account). The comparisons with Germany are irrelevent as its a different SP there.

I could well be wrong and I am open to correction, but in England they pay slightly lower price plan and get nearly four times the texts/call minutes and unlimited data. So why shoudn't I expect that here? Why are we getting shafted?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,755 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

I was considering getting one, but after seeing the difference between the Irish and UK packages I wont be getting one. Price of the iPhone is fine, but the tariffs are a joke imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

i was going to wait until release to get the official version, but i can't justify that tariff so i'm going the unlock route. same price but with no ridiculous contract!

How does e-mail work on the iPhone?
I use eircom's mail, so when I "tap" a person's name from my contacts does it automatically go to eircom mail (presuming I set it up to do that somehow)?

Is it easy to copy over stuff like downloaded movie trailers from PC to the iPhone?

    Yes, you're right, I really don't have a clue......:D

    (thinking of buying one though)

I do believe we get shafted in comparison to UK priceplans in general but that is not specific to the iPhone. Jesus, if people got as exercised about the day to day rip off of mobile tariffs we could have solved this long ago. Why does it take the iPhone for people to get excited. On most operators in UK you can get high end phones like K850i and N95 for free if you sign up to an 18 month contract. We seem to be happy to pay 300+ eur. Where is all the whinging about that?

I'm someone with both an iPhone and a 8Gb N95. I had the iPhone first and I've stopped using it. Yes it's sweet but its crap at being a PHONE. I know 3 people with one and all 3 of us were geting compalints from friends that we didn't reply to missed calls. What missed calls? Now I know that the iPhone has no visual voicemail here... I also know that you don't get a text to tell you there's a message left in your voicemail. So I regularly rang my voice mail to check. Nope! Quite often no record of a missed call. So I did experiments with my brother calling him. At least a 5th of the time Id get a dial tone but his phone did not ring. I never got a chance to leave a message. I've both Voda and O2 sims and he's an O2 only customer. This is not the network... this is the phone. So both of us us Nokias again. I prefer the experience on the iPhone, but it has nowhere near as much functionality and I sadly can't rely on it... pity!

I ordered my iPhone today, just one point that you might not be aware of - Not only can you not avail of your upgrade to buy the phone, your upgrade status gets reset to zero.

I suppose this might not effect most of you but my point is that if you have more than one number on the same account the account staus is reset to zero so the second number would also lose their upgrade.

So if you are eligible to an upgrade for the second user, it would be an idea to use it before you sign up for the iPhone.

Could the bricked functionality of your phone have anything to do with the fact that it's jailbroken?

in England they pay slightly lower price plan and get nearly four times the texts/call minutes and unlimited data. So why shoudn't I expect that here? Why are we getting shafted?

Expect away, but the reason it's NOT here (for any phone or any network, nothing iPhone or o2 specific here), is because of less competition in the Irish market, higher VAT rates, and vastly higher costs of doing business here.

Three have cheaper data bundles than the other Irish networks. It's no coincidence that they don't operate an Irish call centre, employ very few Irish staff, own very little infrastructure and manage very little of their network here. It's also no coincidence that their data service has been one of (if not the) most criticised service on boards (and blogs everywhere).

Yes it'd be great, but just because England has it doesn't translate to a valid expectation in the Irish market. I'm sure the operators are dreading having to go to a price war on data here, and are trying to hold out for as long as possible. They can afford to, because customers still pay up!

Cost of iPhone on o2 Ireland is mostly set by Apple who have long since fleeced Irish customers on exhcange rates and is not iPhone specific. The o2 iPhone plans represent value for money when compared like for like with other Irish plans. Both are still crap, but neither are anything iPhone or o2 specific.

    2 Points to make.

    1. O2 UK & O2 IRL are 2 different companies. Yes they are owned by Telefonica, but each network operates as a different company.

    2. The price plans aren't all that bad. Goto Vodafone and price there nearest tariff

Plan € Min TXT TXT MIN
    Perfect Choice 100 €29 100 100 11c 30c per min
    Perfect Choice 200 €49 200 200 11c 25c per min

    iPhone plan €45 175 100 10c 20c per min

People need to realize o2 aren't robbing us with the iPhone.
Every network in the country is robbing us.
Also the U.K. tariffs were only recently adjusted, the minutes and texts were nearly doubled (correct me if i'm wrong) to attract new buyers.

Before sterling's recent drop in value, ipods etc were priced the same here and in the UK. We're also not treated differently from any other euro country. All ipods cost the same in all euro countries, and this is actually giving us a slight edge over the many countries with lower VAT.

Does anybody here not work for a mobile operator?

I have no connection to any operator, other than being a customer of o2. I'm not defending our (Irish) high ARPUs/data charges, I'm simply pointing out that it has nothing to do with o2 or iPhone specifically and is a much broader problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭talkingclock

so if the pricing has nothing to do with the operator then it must be God-given. then of course we must stop moaning and pay everything to the operator he ask for.

Give to Operator what it Operator's.

What are people's thoughts about not being able to send MMS messages on the iphone?
Is this not something that will put people off (more so in Europe than in the US)

Meh.. never used to send MMS anyways. Can send a photo in an e-mail.. that's all I need!

PS - there's a 3rd party app called SwirlyMMS which allows you to send MMS on the iPhone but recieving them is still not possible.

is this a phone limitation, or is it down to having an unlocked phone?

It's a phone limitation.. there's always the possibility of it in a future firmware update but I'm not holding my breath. Not pushed either way!

I dont think anybody is defending the pricing...just pointing out that high pricing is not an iPhone specific problem

To be honest I'd blame the market influencing the price before I blamed God.

I have been waiting for the iPhone.

Today I bought an N95 8GB from Vodafone for €199. Your loss, O2.

I am a constituent part of the market.
