Reminds me of the story a girl in I worked with ten years ago told me, she was sitting on the dart and there was this guy talking away on his mobile nice and loud so people would notice him (this was before mobile's were popular and it was still something that caught people attention), next thing the phone started ringing!!!
    WHAT A PRAT

It does void the warranty though.

If you reset it, isn't it back to defaults. How do they know its jail broken?

If you know what to look for, it's easy enough to see...

Yeah.. that's true but what I mean is I wouldn't recommend sending off a jailbroken iPhone and expect it to be fixed! :D

So, would you wholeheartedly recommend me jailbreaking the iPhone that I'll probably buy next week?
Don't worry, you won't be receiving letters from my solicitor if I make a bollix of it :p

(is it easy to do BTW??)

Well.. all I'm saying it look at my list of what's missing above and look at how many are added by jailbreaking.

It's a no-brainer really plus plenty of great apps / games like:

    Labyrinth

    Tap-Tap Revolution

    iPhysics

PS - and yeah, it's easy to jailbreak!

    They look like fun :)
If I get stuck next weekend trying to jailbreak, could I drop you a PM??

    Yep, no problem!

Or ask cdebru (the expert) over on the 'iPhone Sourcing / Unlock' thread.. guy's an absolute mind of knowledge!

No, it doesn't. Not without being converted to MP4 first using applications like iSquint or Videoara.

There's a good chance we'll get DivX / XviD (AVI) playback in the 2.0 firmware in June.

Yep, it needs to be jailbroken to install 3rd party apps using an application (Installer.app). Jailbreaking opens up your iPhone to be accessed by external applications and allows you to access your iPhone's system etc. To be perfectly honest, you'd be at a loss without jailbreaking.

    With or without jailbreaking:

    • Songs as Ringtones (does with jailbreaking)
    • Games (does with jailbreaking)
    • Any flash support
    • Instant Messaging (does with jailbreaking)
    • MMS (does with jailbreaking)
    • Video recording (does with jailbreaking)
    • Voice recognition or voice dialing (does with jailbreaking)
    • Hardware-only Bluetooth support
    • 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
    • GPS (an external device can now be bought for this, and a few 3rd party apps are available)
    • Expandable Storage (does with jailbreaking)

So as you can see, jailbreaking does unlock a lot of these missing features.

Oh did i read that correctly, i am stupid but i have to ask, jailbroken works on 3G?

No.. 3G is not currently an option on the iPhone and it's more than software required to make it 3G compatible.

Actually that does translate to a valid expectation for it here. The UK (not England) were not revolutionary in offering unlimited data. AT&T, Orange France, and T-Mobile Deutschland also offer unlimited data. That's every market so far has unlimited data, so why shouldn't we get that too?

You're talking about general markets and various operators. I was responding to the direct comparison of o2 in the UK and Irish markets.

As an aside, no (mobile) operator that I'm aware of offers unlimited data. They all have AUPs. Some are more upfront about it (like o2 Ireland in this case), others leave the limit in the small print in the AUP and some leave it as undefined (but try downloading 50GB for a couple of months and see how long you last).

well lads to be fair i have never done enough reading on anything i was about to buy, i have considered buying an i phone since i first saw it and as the irish launch drew closer i said id read up, me auld one gave me a small book written by some yank who trialled the phone out for six months and reviewed it in this book and i enjoyed reading all the pros and cons of the book i enjoyed it, and if that wasnt enough over the last few days i have read all the responses on boards on the subject which i also enjoyed

im currently on voda pay monthly and use the phone a lot and jumping to o2 is not done likely but as was said before if i want it that has to be done even though i dont think companies should be allowed exclusivity like this but anyway, the contract doesn't bother me and some of the phones limitations don't bother me either although i hope a couple of them are sorted soon but i think its fair to say that all the posts complaining about the Irish and uk tariffs and stupid anyone who choses not to get what they want because the English are getting better value is just plain stupid its not like for like and ya cant compare two thinks that are not the same, sure the i phone tariffs are a little more expensive but that was to be expected, if ya compare any of the tariffs your on at the moment to the uk equivalent the uk one will be much better so really its not much of a point

finally after weighing up the pros and cons for me anyway i had almost me mind made up then the other day a chap that works in carphone warehouse brought in an i phone to play with, it wasn't locked but obviously wasn't working properly till next week but what i saw of it i liked, its new its different and although there are other phones out there that do the same they maybe arent as slick as this , so in summary its something i like and want so am willing to pay a little more than what im paying at the moment to have it and if i couldn't afford it i wouldn't get it, if i was to sit around waiting for this and that tech would move on and id want something different, don't let your principles stop you from getting something ya want ya will be dead soon enough and then whats a couple of quid worth

    now im done

cheers for the good reading lads, il be back

im waiting for the n96 myself, the iphone is the most overhyped gadget ever, it was outdated when it was first launched, i cant see why people are going so crazy over a year old phone that has no mms or 3g when you can get far superior handsets already on the market

I was reading through this thread wondering what all the hyoe is about till I came across the above post and asked myself.....WHAT not even MMS!!!!
Now I'm really wondering why all the hype is about????
Someone who is looking to get this "phone" please tell me:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::)

The iPhone really has nothing extra or special as compared to other phones on the market - besides it's, in my opinion, stupendous UI.

Regarding MMS: as i've said already, who uses MMS? No-one I know uses it besides new proud parents to show off their newborns. And why pay 30 cent to send an tiny compressed picture via MMS when you can send a higher res photo via e-mail instead? MMS is without a doubt the most bloated over-rated capability on a phone.

And as for 3G, it's the kicker with regards to the iPhone. You can wait for a 3G compatible one (due to be launched later this year) but I'm not arsed.

What I ment by no MMS was that MMS is now a basic function on handsets and the iphone does not support this......so why all the fuss??

Yeah, but it's a basic crap function, so what the big deal of not including it? I'm sure in designing certain aspects of the iPhone they had to make compromises, and not including MMS seems like a pretty obvious no-brainer to me.

As has been said many times before, there are many phones on the market with the same functions and more, but that's not the point. Most of the functions, I wouldn't even use. The iPhone's UI is revolutionary, and an amazing pleasure to use. MMS can go f*ck off. :D

I won't consider an iPhone till it gains MMS. There is no reason not to include it,
there is no simplier way off transmitting an image from one phone to another. I take a picture I hit send and name and boom it's gone... As Steve Jobs would it say 'It just works'.

You're the exception that proves the rule, Oafley Jones. The reason not to include is you already have the capability to send images via e-mail. Much more reliable than shoddy MMS's with their their own settings required. Daft things!

You want MMS? Buy a nice 3510i! ;)

You don't use MMS, then good for you. I've never used flash message (whatever the hell it is) yet I'm sure someone has and it's not doing me any harm by the option being on my phone. You say the reason MMS is not included is because you can send images via email, well that's fine but of my friends only two can receive emails on their personal mobile phones and I'm including my friend who is an Apple employee and is getting his iPhone free this week. Like SMS, MMS has its uses in conjunction with email, email is by no means a replacement.

MMS can be incredibly handy, for example here in work we organised a syndicate for the lotto this past week. Friday I bought the ticket, took a picture of the ticket and sent it on to two people in work. The reason I did this this because I buy tickets for my family as well and on the extreme off-chance that there was winnings I'd have a safe-guard against people saying I swapped tickets. It's not that they don't trust me, it's that I prefer it that way.

One thing I've always found infuriating about the Apple commmunity is the willingness to look at an omission and justify it to themselves as a great design. And I'm saying this as an owner of 7 ipods and 4 Apple laptops. In fact my first Job with with Apple and I'm a huge fan of their stuff (MBA can piss off) but not including MMS is a simply a mistake.

Yep the know it alls come along and spurt out some ****e!..

Yes you can email images with the thanks to mail.. but emailing an image is a lot different to sending an image to someones phone! Useless if you want the person to get the picture then and there and not have to wait for them to log onto a pc the next time or hope they too were privileged enough to have an iphone!

In the US they don't use those features..but we do! Its the same phone as they get though. If 02 had said no until they release the 3g iphone apple may have hurried up the launch of it and not wait so long after the US launch this summer.

If you never use mms then you wont miss out but a lot of people do use it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,077 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Fair enough lads. If you're that desperate, I wouldn't bother in waiting for Apple to release it in a future update cos it's doubtful.

I mean as much as I think the iPhone is great.. there's some obvious omissions in their software which haven't been resolved. Speed dials, voice dial functionality etc.

Can still send MMS though.. ah yes, colour picture messages. There's only so many pictures of birthday cakes you could send back in those days. You kids and your cameras, MTV and your rap music were still weeks away! ;)

And no.. it's the pic for it on it's Wikipedia page. It is a bit amateurish looking alright.

Is the iphone on demo anywhere in Dublin now?

How fully functional is the internet aspect of the iPhone?
For example, will I be able to go to amazon.com and order stuff, or can you only passively read webpages?

Fully functional for pages that don't require Flash or Java.
