Interesting. Didn't notice that before. Might explain
Locke's knowledge that Walt is different and has potential. Locke did after all apparenty come face to face with the monster. Did Locke also see the monster in the comic book and put 2 and 2 together?

Have watched up to Episode 8 - 'Confidence Man' and all i can say is.... WOW!!! This is one show i wish i'd got sooner!

'Confidence Man' was a great episode..
finally got some insight into what makes Sawyer such a bad mo-fo. And also got Sayid leaving the rest of the group.. i'm sure he'll be back!

The only episode i thought was somewhat weak so far was 'House Of The Rising Sun'...
not a bad episode by any means but i just found Sun and Jin's backstory to be the least interesting of all so far!

Loved Charlie, Kate, Jack and Locke's backstory
(especially the revelation of the "miracle" at the end of 'Walkabout')
. Will be interested to see backstories for Boone, Claire, Sayid & Hurley.

Will hopefully watch up to Episode 12 tonight. It's great stuff so far though!!

Any idea how many episodes will be in the current series (there's bound to be another)? I'm guessing 20 - 22 episodes.

I think I remember reading that they are pushing for 24 episodes this season.

Cool - I hope they do. I expected it to be 22, in line with Alias' previous years, but the more the better. (That said, it is a very expensive show to make - the move to the caves was planned because that set is in a studio, and the island location filming is kept to a minimum in some episodes. Also, from episode 11's throwaway mention and in reality from 12 on,
the tide coming up the beach and covering the fuselage was designed to avoid having to set that up on the beach for each scene there. Now they can film on a (relatively) 'clean' beach. Mocking up the set with scattered luggage is nowhere near as time-consuming or expensive as setting up the fuselage each week. (They have to put it back to normal between filming.)

This is helping to make it no more expensive than a regular prime-time series, and since we're not seeing any monsters, the show doesn't have any great special effects sequences (not since the costly ones in the pilot anyway.)

The show doesn't need special effects. Its all about story and characters. Thats what makes it so good......

Yep. I think that's what's making it so unique - we're loving learning more about these people and their pasts, all of which makes us care more about them as people. I've said this before, but we really do know more about this bunch in 14 episodes than we do with most series during an ENTIRE run!

As for special effects, you've reminded me of something I spotted just at the end of ep 14. Just before the last scene's cut to Michael and Walt, there's an establishing shot - and if you look up to the top of the screen - you can see the Plough in the sky.

Now, I know they left from Sydney and were working their way towards Singapore en route to Los Angeles, but doesn't this mean for sure that they went far enough north to pass the equator? (I'd need to double-check, but I'm pretty sure you can't see the plough in the southern hemisphere. I think you see the Southern Cross as the most easily identifiable constellation down there. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me like another deliberate clue...)

I agree with that you said with regard to learning about the characters. In the
Ethan episode, I was absolutely gutted by the hanging.
You really get emotionally attached to these characters, and when something happens to one of them, you CARE! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

Showed that ep to my brother and sister at the weekend -
to say they were gutted during those agonising moments is an understatement. How he became each of our favourite characters, I'm not sure, but, like me, they were starting to reconcile themselves to the fact he was dead, muttering, "Nooo! I don't believe it! How could they...?" etc.

I still think trying something similar with Shannon in ep 13 was dodge, especially coming hot on the heels of the Charlie trick - OK, so her 'death' was only a hallucination, but you were inclined NOT to buy it in the plot so soon after this. I suppose that only means the next time the writers try this trick, it will be for real.

But, anyway, liking the characters this much means your guts are wrenching at such scenes. The bell tolling and soft incidental music in that Charlie scene was killer as well, along with a long pull-back from the camera as if to say, "We're leaving the trio in peace to grieve now!"

Well, from this report, http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18633.html the good news is that Michael Keaton turned down the role of Jack.

    And from this one,
http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|92840|1|,00.html most people are now catching-on to some of the philosophy connections, not to mention other tidbits that are scattered about and never coincidental (Watership Down).

    Solitary is episode 9....

Damn ... no Lost for 2 more weeks :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

To be fair, the show started in mid-September, earlier than most other shows (October), so we are slightly further ahead on it (ep 14) than with some of the others airing. It also returned a little earlier from its Christmas break than those which started later. They'll still be aiming to end the season in mid-May, so with only 8 (or 10 if it's a season with 24 eps) remaining, they'll probably run three weeks in February (sweeps month) and the first two weeks of May (also sweeps), leaving just 3 (or 5) episodes remaining for March and April - agonising as it sounds! Worst thing about a show this good is that it makes suffering through the US breaks even worse!

The DVD of Series 1 (Region 1) will be released near the end of the Summer... with Season 2 already planned to start in the Autumn.

Damon Lindelof mentioned this and a bit more about the future of the show in an interview with SciFi.com. Read it below!

There's very minor spoilers in it:

Sorry if this has been posted already, I had to skip down to the end of the thread because I'm not fully up to date with the show @ the moment :)

Anyway, ABC have put up a website for Drive Shaft, it's worth a look, some funny pictures on it.

Anyone know when this starts here? Could have been be mentioned but I'm trying to keep spoiler free. I've just watched the first 4 eps (great stuff) but can find any decent torrents for ep 5 onwards so I suppose I'll have to wait until it's shown.

July on E4 AFAIK, unless RTE2 show it beforehand. F*cking ridiculous - E4 postponed the airing of one of the most successful new shows in the US, in favour of the highly derided, and sure to be cancelled, "Point Pleasant". Idiots! GOSH!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,602 ✭✭✭SteM

Cheers. I'm not waiting until July, looks like I'll have to put my searching cap on ;)

Great episode 15. This show is totally unpredicatable unlike 24 which is starting to get very jaded.
Very gutsy move by the writers to kill Ethan off with still one third of the season left

    Ah crap.....

.. forgot that spoiler tags are revealed in e-mail notifications.

Ah well.. will watch 'Homecoming' tomorrow.

Just to let you know how the rest of the season will shape up.. regarding whose backstory will be explored in each episode and airdates.
How the rest of the season shakes out:

    Episode 16: Outlaws
    Feb. 16
Written by: Drew Goddard (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Alias”)
    Centered around: Sawyer

    Episode 17: … In Translation
    Feb. 23
Written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“House of the Rising Sun,” “Hearts and Minds”) and Leonard Dick ("Fastlane," "Hack," "Tarzan," "Clubhouse").
    Centered around: Jin

    Episode 18: Numbers
    March 2
Written by: David Fury (“Walkabout,” “Solitary,” “Special”) & Brent Fletcher (“Angel”).
    Centered around: Hurley

    Episode 19: Deus Ex Machina
    April 13
Written by: Damon Lindelof (“Homecoming”) and Carlton Cuse (“Hearts and Minds”)
    Centered around: Locke

    Episode 20: Do No Harm
    April 20
Written by: Janet Tamaro (“Line of Fire,” “CSI: New York”)
    Centered around: Jack

    Episode 21: Sides
    April 27
Written by: Leonard Dick (“... In Translation”)
    Centered around: Sayid

    Episode 22
    Centered around: Kate

But 22 doesn’t represent season’s end. We confirmed today there are 24 episodes to this supersized first season.
Will be interesting to see Hurley's backstory... seems to be the only one who hasn't revealed any real information about his past.

Yeah it was a pretty good episode. Not sure about the unpredictability of it though. For instance
Claire losing her memory and Ethan dying were both very handy for leaving them and us as much in the dark as we ever were. They seem determined to drag out the who's/what's and the why's.

I agree. Did he something earlier that he was considered a "master" (or something like that) back where he is from? He does take it upon himself to do most of the organising and
    funeral recitals
. I reckon his backstory might only be used for comedic purposes, unless they plan on actually bringiing him to the foreground and the meat and bones storylines.

Speaking of backstories, I thought this week's one with Charlie was kind of weak. It had only one purpose and that was to justify something he does near the end. The justification was pretty damn weak as well.

I loved the fact that the rich bird's dad was out of town to buy a paper merchant in Slough.

I thought it was a good episode. It brought a few things out into the open.

The group now now that there are guns available - this should prove interesting as the death of Scott will have put Fear as the main emotion to the forefront of many of the survivors. One of the upcoming episodes 'Sides' looks like there might be a split etc and Lockes previous comment to Boone about wanting Sayid on their [/]side[/i] is interesting.

Claires memory does seem to be returning after the peanut butter comment - she may have a central role to play yet - especially after the birth which can only be a few weeks away now. It is still believed that Claire was taken for the baby more than anything else. btw - I was alway curious how she managed to be let onto aflight so heavily pregnant.

Jack and Sawyer are due to have a 'crossing' in the next episode and this many cause the split.

Hurley is the dark horse of the group and I think the writers have something special for him.

There are still a few backstories yet to be told - Jin, Rose, Walt, Hurley. Walt and Jin have appeared in other backstories - Michael and Sun but haven't had their own. Not sure if Rose will get one but I think the writers have her there for something.

Am half way through watching Homecoming.. will post an opinion of it at the end.

But thought i'd share this with ye.. more news about the 'Lost' Season 1 DVD from a TV columnist at TVGuide.com (near the bottom of the page here - (http://www.tvguide.com/news/askausiello/050209.asp):
Question: Your column makes it easy to get over the Wednesday hump. You always provide vital information to your readers. My question: Are there any plans for a Lost Season 1 DVD? If so, what is the anticipated release date? I can't wait!!! — Jack S.

Ausiello: It's coming out in early September, and I predict it'll be the biggest TV DVD of the year. Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof tells me that they have an "amazing amount" of extras planned, including "awesome commentaries," deleted scenes between Locke and Hurley, Sawyer and Charlie and Locke and young Walt; footage of the Boeing 747 being cut up in the Mojave Desert and transported via barge to Hawaii; and a look at what went into making the original polar bear sequence. But here's the best part: Lindelof says he and J.J. Abrams are considering making an original mini-movie that "answers one of the questions we've been asked very frequently about the show but have made no attempt to answer so far. It has something to do with why the plane may have crashed." Like me, the exec thinks "the DVD is gonna sell really well with or without [the bonus material], but I wanna be sure the fans are rewarded for their $39.95 or whatever Disney is charging them for a show they've already seen." Only $39.95?!?!?! I'll take two!
Will definantly be buying that boxset!!

    EDIT:
I loved the fact that the rich bird's dad was out of town to buy a paper merchant in Slough.
Yeah, loved that reference to 'The Office' but it's well known that JJ Abrams and Ricky Gervais are always collaborating.. Alias and next on MI:3.

Anyways.. onto Homecoming... another brillant episode! The one thing that will drive me crazy now is:
why did Ethan want Claire, or i assume more suitably why did he want her baby? I'm sure it'll be revealed in time - probably something to do with the fortune teller's comments.
Don't think it was the best idea for Jack to give Sawyer that gun.. especially since Sawyer only cares about one person.. Sawyer!

This show is just getting better and better!!

Roll on Episode 16 - 'Outlaws'!

PS - By the way.. here's the preview for Episode 18! Looks like a 'rumble in the jungle' for Jack and Sawyer alright!

I know this has probably been mentioned before but i'm not bothered reading through the whole thread for the answer. So i'll ask again, does anyone know when 'Lost' is starting on RTE2?
