Great crowd last night which is great to see. Good buzz around the place.

The players put in a good shift aswell. Caulfield had a very tough week I'm sure, hopefully that win lifted his spirits some bit.

For "current set-up" do you mean 3 at the back? Difficult system, but better attacking options, which seemed to have borne fruit on the night. Switched to 4 at the back for the second half to defend lead. So all round great tactics, and good pressure, making for very entertaining football. Really good atmosphere.

I think Byrne is doing a good job in there, athletic, physical and keeps it simple.

United’s season has petered out almost as badly as this thread…. ;)

Anyone know what’s the story with Hickey, is he long term injured or even still with us? Seems like ages since he played and no talk of him at all.

Injured, due back soon, this week was rumoured but didn't make it. Big game tonight, lose and we're in full relegation dog fight, win and we can start to move up maybe.

Awful performance. Look lost and lacking fight. A relegation battle is looming and I wouldn't fancy their chances.

Caulfield really should have been sacked after the playoff loss. Last season when Ollie had come into the mix there was a bounce and while they still played a lot of long ball there was at least some variety to the play. This season is like a throwback to the pre-Ollie days. Is Caulfield putting more of his mark back on the team?

Well we went up under JC so sacking him probably wouldn't have been the solution. This season we have changed system to suit some of the high earners, Cunningham, we should get back to a back 4 and back to last season's shape. With Hickey and Jimmy back, and McGuinness performance last night there's some positives. Hopefully JC will see what everyone else is seeing and change.

The First Division is a different kettle of fish though. All of the Premier teams are full time. You can't just rely on physicality to boss teams around in this division. Hickey is a big loss but mostly because we are relying so much on long ball tactics. One saving grace is if we end up in the playoff this season, I can see us staying up.

I just listened to LOI Central, they are saying Ollie has been absent for a while as he is dealing with something. Hope he is alright and honestly, that could help explain why we are back to so much route 1.

Illness supposedly. Hopefully he gets through it. Don't think its a reason for our poor form, bar a good start we've been poor all season.

100%. Slevin is mentally checked out it looks like. We could have played another ten hours there and not scored. Hard to see where any points will come from between now and seasons end. Cobh in a playoff is worrying.

I think that’s a bit unfair on Slev, he’s been pretty decent but has been a scapegoat so far.
Shaw has shown nothing so far, can’t see what he offers tbf.
I just don’t see where we go from here, I didn’t like the 5/3/2 formation at the start of the season as we didn’t have the midfield players to hold it.

We played as a 4 last night and it was largely fine outside of the goal, the balance and calmness Buckley brings has been missed. The 6 ahead of them is the issue right now, no cohesion, all disjointed.

Slevin looks mentally away, the team were called to the bench around 80mins when Brann went down, Slevin didn't join and just stayed out on the pitch. Before that, after giving away a stupid free for a shove in the Cork players back, JC was shouting at him and he turned and just gave him a dirty look.

Yeah, it’s been pretty dire for a while now alright, and can’t see where/how they’re gonna turn it around.

A lucky break or moment of quality to nick a point or win a game which maybe could give confidence to even go on a small run. But that seems unlikely right now, we're at our lowest ebb for 3 years and the squad looks disinterested. Up to 10 or 12 of them will be gone next season so easy to see why the heads are gone.

The Bohs game at home is where we dropped off a cliff, at half time we were going top of the table we then got sucker punched at the death to lose and have just spiralled since then....losing our main goal threat was just the cherry on top

Losing Byrne can't be underestimated either, massive loss, midfield has fallen apart since.

The Shams game was a good result. Prob a good time to play them.

The Derry game will be tricky though they are a very unpredictable bunch too.

Performances like that for the rest of the season and we'll be ok. Have to get passed Salthill in the cup first though.

I don't understand why to be honest. Salthill are a seriously good team, but a junior football team. The levels are absolutely miles apart. For any kind of contest, they'd have to perform out of their skin whilst United simultaneously had a nightmare.

Great cup weekend in general. The next draw is a big one!

When is quarter final draw ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

    Tuesday 12 o'clock I'd say.

Marc Ludden and Enda Curran are good players! Yer man, number 11 Darcy looked like a good player. Hopefully the GUFC coaching staff took note.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Shtop, Enda is woeful, same stinky attitude he's always had. Didn't try a leg and just kept shaking his head and whining all night. Darcy and Ludden their best outfielders, keeper had a stormer too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,358 ✭✭✭Wompa1

He didn't have a good match but he is a good player. Had no bother scoring against us when he was with Treaty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

A game we should never have lost, full value for the draw. Lost all composure after they had the man sent off. Have to hope that somehow we can reel Waterford in as Sligo are gonna bypass both of us I reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Ya it's all so sad what the family have gone through in the last few years, heart goes out to them. May Ollie rest in peace. I'm sure himself and Marty will have great tactical chats on the other side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭ratracer

So like our season, this thread started off OK, then petered out into a low key finish…..:

I have to say I’ve not been overly impressed by the off season transfer business so far, and I reckon we’ll be this years Cork City! Caulfield will be under no pressure, but I’d imagine the crowd will be down this year. I wish I could be a little less pessimistic, but we’ve signed kids and first division level players!

I hope I’m proven drastically wrong!!

There are better places to talk all things GUFC. This place is a morgue for the most part.

Next season will be tough. Still time to add some quality. We need 6 or 7 more yet anyway.
