A torch mount is restricted item?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 1,904 Mod ✭✭✭✭otmmyboy2

I'd suspect it was misidentified by customs as being related to night vision or similar.

A few emails and a screenshot of the product listing to customs should clear that up.

Also add a reference about the recent court case about importing gun parts and the like.

Yeah, probably to do with the title of the Ebay advert given the info in posts below ⬇️

I think it could have had laser mount and possibly night vision in the advert heading. I just went and got ripped off by an Irish supplier instead.

We are so backwards here! ☹️

As posted on another thread but with simmilar topic here.

Have fun contacting them tho. They are the most Kafkaesque and user unfriendly operation to get hold of when you need them, next to An Post.

Phone numbers that don't recive incoming calls[ ZV plate vechicle registration Rosslare].Emails that end up in dead email accounts[Athlone] Roving switchboard,so that means if you ring their main switchboard, you could be connected to someone in Foynes,Co Limerick when your problem is in Dublin airport.Ring them back 5 mins later and you are talking to someone in Rosslare!

I had a run of them last year importing a rifle from France, and the majority of this stems from Customs officals being not Aufe with the firearms laws, and being put in a position by the Courier companies or An Post to deal with"suspicious packages of possible contraband or import duties due".Compounded now of course with Brexit and it being firearms related.

They had already sent the mount back to the seller, email I got was just a courtesy I guess.

Dont know whether to feel sad or embarrassed for the genuine aGS who have to carry firearms in their course of their duties, and are being literally F..$5D over by their superiors with nonsense like this, like not even having the decency to aquire proper holsters for their side arms and some bright spark,or someone on the sly went off to some Fukstick whom someone knew, might literally cobble up a few aul holsters and make a good few quid on it too Be grand!

Now an officer is dead courtsey of known faulty issued police equipment, not to mind,FIK literally NO weapons retention training!Be a massive lawsuit by the next-of-kin were this a US Police Dept. But here it will be the usual Govt response,Deny,Delay,Destroy and deep pocket the whistleblower out of their claim and job.

How on earth was someone, who was on bail for illegal firearms offences, still in possession of any legally held firearm?

Just seems extremely odd given how quick AGS have been to seize firearms over even just baseless accusations in the past.

    Good update though, cheers Tony!

this 100% can not be true , thats something they are putting out there to spread fear to bring the hammer down on giving out licenses, because otherwise AGS have some major questions to answer …also it dose not say legal held by who , it try’s to imply him but also dose not say his …

One would think not, but yes the only logical explanation would be that the gun was legally held by a 3rd party and illegally taken by the shooter.

If it was legally held , then either the person it belonged to will have a world of trouble come down on them , and if it was his then AGS will have a world of trouble trying to explain this one away .

Possibly dual liscensed to another family member?

Unless they try and do a jingling keys trick like the Scots did in Dunblane and the Uk did with Hungerford.Cover up massive police forces failures with Hamilton and Ryan being known threats, and not being taken seriously.Distract the sheeple with something like "oh look how dangerous guns are!" while hoping no one looks as why this loser here, had still possibly a legally held shotgun.

But lets face it.Why would they have to be so subtle when we think on how that slimy Dermot Aherne banned CF handguns,by using a gang murder of an innocent in Limerick with a totally illegal handgun to cynically hang his pet legislation on that particular peg.

Sofar according to the DOJ themselves;this might change of course post Carlow

A talk on the new EU 2025 legislation on importing/exporting firearms to Ireland.

A chat from a psychologist on how to recognise if one of us in the shooting community, might be getting to the point of offing themselves,or ourselves. No doubt post the two land inheritance disputes/ murder / self killings that happened down in Cork 2 or 3 years ago.

Not a bad idea,I'm sure plenty of us know or have been touched by someone who has done themselves in,not in even a gun ownership context and good to know some signs ,but fraught with difficulties in reality if you are or they are a gun owner.

Coincidently,y that EU directive has a mention of tightning up EU wide on psychological/medical aspects in applications. in its short blurb.

Q&A on questions you have sent in to the Dept[and I hope we HAVE been doing such!].

i don’t know about the dual licensed thing, because the protocol there would be to take the gun away from both them because they could easily say you have bad judgment because your friend had multiple firearm convictions…so would jump on that just to take the gun away from both people ,

Sad part is we will never know the truth but i wont be shocked if its used to tighten things up again ,
yea sure i still don’t understand the 9mm CF pistol ban …surly if you show your a responsible person to hold a firearm in the first place then it means your responsible to hold ANY firearm …but hey it is Ireland after all ..

The last thing we would want is getting psychologists involved in fairness , yea maybe for some gun cubs to recognise stuff like that , but sure as shooting wont want them involved in the application process , its bad enough as it is but them Psychologists are on another level of crazy …

WWhat Happens when you give a very anti gun politican strong political office, and you have very weak pro gun organisations who were more interested in measuring appendages than dealing with a real threat that was on the radar.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I posted the below in the Shooting in Carlow thread:

Imagine if this guy had entered the centre with his illegally obtained G3 automatic rifle, semi-automatic pistol and explosive devices instead of the shotgun he somehow got his hands on.

I think an actual massacre has been narrowly avoided.

i think that’s ALOT of misinformation , he didn’t shoot at anyone , he shot into the air because he wanted to let people know he was going to kill himself , would of made no difference what gun he used as his intent was to kill himself not hurt people . Also I would be more worried about someone shooting the place up with a shot gun more then a handgun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,273 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

BULL!!!He had intent to do harm and even firing in the air is considerd a danger and a chargeable offence.Reckless discharge of a firearm in a public place. Why go to a public place like a shopping centre to kill yourself? Most people go off for a walk in the woods or someplace quiet to end it all. Going to a public place like that was to make a statement or do physical harm to others. He could have ended it to by "death by cop" as there were armed Gardai present and if he had pointed the gun at them would have been perfectly justified in opening fire ,in fear of their lives.

Being callous and utterly selfish here, but thank God he didn't use a handgun ,as we would have a line of politicos , anti gun do gooders, and media whores and senior Gardai demanding a ban on the few miserable ones we have left.Irrespective of caliber.

oh I’m not condoning what he did here at all and 100% agree a danger to the public and reckless discharge of a firearm , but from the reports the cops seem to think he had no intention of shooting anyone he just seemed like a nutter butter that wanted people to see himself end himself. Whole thing is bloody messed up ain’t it.

oh this will 100% be used wile overlooking the fact this chap could smuggle 2 restricted firearms into Ireland a lot easier then it is for someone to get a license for a legal one …

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,273 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

Easier maybe, but 1000% riskier,as you have no clue on the dark net,who or what you are dealing with, and it isn't unknown for intl Law enforcement to go fishing with something like this to see what they can catch.I wouldn't say what looks like a newish in grease, full auto G3 plus X amount of ammo is cheap either.Ditto for a 1911 45ACP. so this bunch must have had some money to spend on this lark.About the same as 3 plane tickets to Prauge or Las Vegas and a weekend on the beer after going to one of the full auto ranges and wasting a few hundred quid in ammo, all prefectly legally.

I was filling in some licence renewals and noticed telescopic sights need a new application for a restricted cert. When did this happen?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,781 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Only light emitting telescopic sights. So your nightivsion, thermal, infrared, etc. Anything that is light emitting and capable of being mounted to a firearm.

Any "normal" telescopic sights are as they always were, not a firearm hence nothing need of any sort of licencing.
