For most games I never bother with walkthroughs but the devs of these games are different. Elden Ring in particular is absolutely vast and you get almost no information at all about where to go or what to do. There’s no journal of any sort or even a basic log of conversations you have with NPCs so for side quests in particular if you don’t use walkthroughs or wikis it will take hundreds and hundreds of hours to figure out and finish everything on your own and even if you could give it that time you’d still miss things. It did annoy me alright when playing through Dark Souls 3 but generally I will try and do as much as I can on my own before looking up help.

Just go in blind. Maybe look stuff up so you aren't missing any major areas and bosses. Honestly the NPC sidequests are fun and all but you don't need to finish them and they are well documented online. Platinums and gamerscore don't matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

While I mostly agree, getting the best ending (as well as the areas, items and bosses that go along with it) takes a fair bit of leg work and is very hard to track without a guide. But then, you don't knowthat you're missing stuff unless you're already looking at a guide or walkthrough, nor do you know which NPCs or quests are side missions or important for the best endings, or what you might lock yourself out of if you don't do something in time.

This probably applies more to the older games as I do think ER is better balanced in that regard, but things like the repeated eavesdropping which eventually leads to Fountainhead Palace in Sekiro, or the invitation to Cainhurst Castle in Bloodborne, or anything to do with World Tendency in Demons Souls... I'm not sure I would have figured out any of them without guides, but also without knowing I needed to follow a guide while playing in the first place.

So im about to jump in finally, im going in almost totally blind and will be taking my time.

However i am keen to hear thoughts on an easier class or build to begin with if there is one :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well in Elden Ring the ending you get, other than an obscure one you have to work for just really changes the background colour.

Has anyone re-speced to a totally new build in this. I've got past the academy and now Caria Manor and starting to struggle. I've gone with a mainly melee build with small bit of magic but I think a ranged magic build would make things a bit easier. Has anyone done anything similar or is it even worth it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Oh totally. There's a good ending, a bad ending, and 4 middle endings which are all the same. But the good and bad endings require going to certain areas which aren't that easy to find or access, have interesting items/weapons or have ancient smithing stones, or have brilliant boss fights. Or even accessing the boss fight against Placidusax is definitely very easy to miss though it has no bearing on anything).

With Elden Ring I think you can still do most of those things after completing the game even if you can no longer get that ending, but with other Soulsborne games you can miss or lock yourself out of some great content.

Depends on the playstyle you want to go with. There are numerous viable builds, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll also be able to completely respec later in the game.

That said, Samurai is a solid choice for a Dex/Int build.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

On my second playthrough I flip-flopped between a few different builds. Started as strength/faith but was struggling, so when I got the chance to respec I went dex/faith for a while, then an arcane bleed build, then back to strength/faith by the end as I could quickly level up some great strength & faith weapons/spells.

Don't be afraid to respec, there are plenty of larval tears to find and respec again if you need. The main thing to keep in mind is what weapons will you use if you respec, and can you upgrade those weapons to match the level you're respeccing to.

Thanks for the reply. Ye I think the weapons is my main worry at the moment. I'm sure I can go grab some before I respec but not sure id have the upgrade materials to bump them up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

If you think there are places you haven't fully explored in the starting areas that you could handle with a low-level weapon, it would be worth doing those to help you try to collect smithing stones and also get used to the different playstyle, before you start progressing further. A few caves could help you buff the weapon to near enough where you're currently at.

Is there anything important to do before starting NG+? I think I remember reading somewhere that you should cash in the items you get for killing bosses to get weapons or armour or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah you could duplicate whatever remembrances you can in the big mausoleum-walking things, then either use them for runes, or unlock weapons at the two fingers in the Roundtable Hold if you want them. If you think you might want to dual-wield any of the remembrance weapons (such as Radahn's sword), you can only get one per playthrough, so use the remembrence for them before starting NG+, then you can get the seond one for dual-wielding in NG+.

I'd also suggest collecting as many of the ancient smithing stones and gravewort flowers as you can, just in case you want to upgrade more weapons or summons. And buy as many upgrade materials from the Twin Maidens as you can, as some of the bell-bearings don't carry over, and I think things might become more expensive (but I'm not sure on that).

After that, just collect as many larval tears and stonesword keys if you know there are more out there you haven't found yet.

This probably gives the best breakdown of what carried over and what doesn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

All smithing stone bell bearings carry over to NG+. Worth collecting while you have the whole map unlocked.

Magic is strong in this game but you don't get the good stuff until you've levelled up your stats a good bit. The Katanas are very strong and require high dexterity to use effectively. If you haven't played any of the souls game before when levelling up pick a few stats to specialise in depending on what weapons / magic you'd like to use, rather than spreading the points around evenly. In the beginning it's important to level up your vigour a fair bit early on as once you move away for the starting areas the enemies start to hit hard and you always want to be able to tank a few hits from regular enemies.

I would say for your first playthrough don't bother with walkthroughs or wikies at all, if you get properly stuck post questions in this thread and we can give spoiler free hints.

Also I wouldn't worry too much about messing up stats as you can very easily re-spec after an early enough point of the game.

Quick overview on how to make a Witcher build and play as one too. This is actually great.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,487 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Not sure how far you are into the game but maybe bookmark this link to use as a reference:

It has lots of builds for different levels, fantastic resourse that wiki is.

I hadn't played the game since last summer I think - got stuck at the second phase of the second last boss and gave it a long break. My eldest started playing it over Christmas (his first From game) which got me back into it too. Decided to change build (was dex/arc with rivers of blood I think) to the Gravity God build from the above link - great fun it is. And got me past that second last boss finally.

I started as a Samurai but want to go the magic route now so will probably start over with an astrologer.

You don't need to start over you can respec once you reach a certain point in the game. Not sure how far in your are though.

Im level 16 on both now, still in the starting zone apart going a bit further in to grab a staff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

You're probably in a bit of a middle ground. Closer to the start than where you'll become able to respec, but also far enough in that restarting might be a pain and not really worth it. Your time might be better spent just exploring everywhere in the starting areas as much as possible and simply putting all your runes into levelling up Int (for sorceries using a staff) or Faith (for incantations using a seal). That way you'll likely find decent weapons/items/upgrade materials that will be beneficial too.

The starting classes don't matter too much past the first area. You're still early enough that just levelling up different attributes or farming/exploring shouldn't take that long to re-jig your skills into the type of build you want rather than restarting. Any points you've already put into the likes of Dex might be required anyway to wield some better staffs later on.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Yeah im sticking with the mage for now ,exploring the starting zones and spending runes i get for leveling up int and mind so far mostly int.

Im wondering when i will be powerful enough to clear all castes and point of interest in the starting zones, just hit lvl 20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

You should be fairly capable for most stuff in the starting areas. The castle to the very south can be difficult enough, maybe leave it until last before moving North into the next areas, say Level 25 or so.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Yeah the castle in the South was the one i was trying :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Hah yeah, it's tricky as f*ck. Use ranged attacks to pull enemies one by one where you can, and divide and conquer!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I wouldn’t worry about clearing absolutely everything before moving on. There’s a lot of stuff you’ll encounter as the game progresses which is designed to be revisited at higher levels, and you’ll be back to previous regions pretty regularly if you do any of the side quests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I'd explore until you level up a few more times just to rebalance your skill points and weapons to your new build, then don't be afraid to move on without having done everything. You'll start to get diminishing returns in terms of runes/items.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Quick question, the "alter garments" option in site of grace isnt giving me upgraded stats if i choose to later garment.

Im still using the starting one but wondering if i upgrade a few times stats will improve?

As it is the option given to me now is worse stats than the starting one.

There’s no armour upgrading in the game. Alter garments is mostly an aesthetic thing (and some additional lore here and there). You get more armour as the game progresses that’ll be more suited to particular builds.

So I have done some of the caves and catacombs in Limgrave now and even killed my first dragon just east of the starting area :) Roughly 25 hours clocked up so far and starting to really get used to the combat etc with my new weapons :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,497 ✭✭✭cml387

The most important thing to remember is that it's not necessary to kill everything. Unlike most games they only respawn anyway. If there's a treasure, rush in get it and die, but you'll still have the treasure. Especially ignore those big fugging knoghts.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Cant shake the feeling i want the end to come now for my first playthrough.

Hate saying it but boredom is really setting in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Markitron

I got a bit burned out on it too. Decided to leave 3 or 4 major areas until my second run with the DLC, that way I will still have loads of new things to do. I did this with Bloodborne and it was like having a whole new game to play through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭wayne040576

So I got this game on release. A year later 82 hours in, I still haven't completed it. I only get to play a couple of hours on Sundays. I reached the fire giant a few weeks back but decided to stop my progression of the main story there and start exploring the areas a bit more. The game still throws surprises at. Today, I killed a few bosses who had been giving me trouble earlier, then decided to travel back to round table for some enhancements only to find the place in darkness. That silent guard who normally stands in one of the halls had gone red and started attacking me a few seconds after I spawned.

It completely caught me off guard and took a few circles of the table before I could fight back. 😄

On NG+1 I succeeded in racking up 1,000,000 runes before the Rennala boss fight in Raya Lucaria and I was hoping for an award but...nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,497 ✭✭✭cml387

Actually what's the largest amount of runes players have accumulated before chickening out and cashing in?

Man, I wonder how far out it is. Surely would have been in development for quite some time, if only officially announcing it now, could be fecking huge altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I'm guessing end of the year at the earliest. But they've a great track record of substantial DLC that are worth the wait.

I just hope they give enough notice for me to decide if I want to do another playthrough in advance of the DLC or not.

My continued stubborn refusal to play NG+ in a From game pending DLC continues to pay off

Great news about the DLC, I've not gone back to the game since finishing the main story, got a bit burned out on it but will defo come back for the DLC. Back playing Bloodborne on PS5 for my FromSoft fix, and man I wish they would make a sequel to it - what a masterpiece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,229 ✭✭✭✭Penn

That's my big worry. I've completed pretty much everything on my main playthrough to the point where I don't want to have to do NG+ as even if I complete it I won't have everything done. Even after completing a second playthrough on a new save I ended up going back to my first save/character. But it means I might also be over-levelled for a DLC. Though I guess given how hard some of their previous DLCs have been, might not be a bad thing either.

But then, I kinda want to do NG+ if for no other reason than to be able to dual-wield Wing of Astels...

Fantastic news. Any excuse to ignore my family again is welcome

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,917 ✭✭✭nix

I still havent played this, which is wild to me, given my love for soulsborne/sekiro, its been going on so long now i think im just gonna wait for the "complete" edition. Or maybe when this DLC/expansion gets released I'll dive in, just in case i get run over and killed haha 😄😫

Anyway, i have Demon souls installed on my new ps5 to tide me over 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I'm gonna keep my main save for the DLC in case it releases sooner rather than later and you need to be end game. I want to try a new build anyway so will start a new game and see how far I get but I've no idea what build to go for. My main save is a lord of blood build so want to try something new but anytime I do that in a Souls game, I gravitate to what I already know.

Any tips for a magic sword build? I wouldn't mind dual wielding but I like my shield too much. If there's a build I have in mind to start with, I could make a beeline to a certain area in the map for good equipment to match it.
