Looks like a lot of people don't like the whole chaos real mechanic in campaign. It's not that rewarding for the effort you put. Specially at the start of campaing as you pretty much have to dedicate your main army to go in there for a lot of turns. There are even mods to remove the whole damn thing already, which I understand.

I personally watching on YouTube Kislev, Kathy and Demon Prince playthrougs after work, before passing out in bed. ( leave home at 10 and back at 11 at night, so not much time left to myself ) This way i Get at least some WH content during work days. So far whole Chaos realm thing just feels annoying and not very fun. I guess it's the reason why I am on turn 80 and I just went to Slanesh once to get seduced and get a good chunk of gold, that I really needed. Other then that I just close down rifts.

Actually closing down rifts a bit of a pain in a gap too, because when your empire expands, you need to keep some forces deep in your territory, just to be able to get those rifts under control.

Other then that, I really like it. One of the the things that I really like, is that you can trade settlements now. When I played WH2 as empire, I loved ability to take over settlements from non human factions that invaded Empire and then give them back to original owner. Which makes you a lot of good "karma" and you can have some good allies taking blows away from you, while you focus somewhere else. Now in WH3, I can take over settlements that are not suitable for me, but I just gift them or sell them to ally faction, to make a little buffer from me and other threats.

Jaysus, looks like boards.ie is really dead now. In fairness, I was not much around until WH3 came out.

Anyway, I had day off today, so last night and today, I had some quality time with warhammer and a glass of wine.

Again, really love Ogres. They are so far my favourite faction out of all of the ones I tried. First faction that I aggressively charge in to enemy armies and not just hug a corner amd hope for the best.

Making a wee ogre ball and sending it in to one side of enemy flank never gets old. Then have ledbealchers just pepper the middle of the enemy army. To finish off send 2 Stonehorns to opposite flank. After that enjoy the show hehe.

The other thing is, that Ogres can have stupid amount of money and income thanks to camps. I love having defensive armies in important parts of me empire and its even easier with camps. You can have 6 armies, 4 of them sitting in camps waiting for something to wonder in, while your 2 main armies just go HAM.

Finally got 2 Souls. Slanesh and Khorn. Auto resolved the main battles as I sow them on YouTube and really could not be arsed. And after doing it myself, I dislike concept even more. My main legendary lord pretty much goes to portal, spends all time in chaos Real, gets soul and then spends pretty much all his time in garrison getting debuff off. By the time it's gone, a new wave of portals opened...

So I managed to finish Mass Effect Legendary edition having never played the games years ago.

Enjoyed it overall, story was good, gameplay in 3 was great, glad I took the time to play them.

I started Lost Ark the other day and I'm level 21 now so prob about 10 hrs in. The quests are awful, like the most cookie cutter quests you can imagine which let's it down, gets tedious in between combat even with a mount.

The combat is stunning but not sure I'll continue with it for the moment or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Well, I just won my very first campaign in Warhammer Totalwar!!! It was on normal difficulty and i did save scummed, but i dont care, its the most I ever achoeved in these series. Was playing exclusively WH3 since it launched.

Not sure if I want to give a small break or go with Khorn next!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Still turtling away at Lost Ark here and there, gonna hit level 50 the next time I login.

Combat is so so good, slower paced diablo style combat in an MMO world.

Biggest issue is the quests are truely awful. Like zero imagination. You can literally get quests where you walk about 5 meters away from the giver to someone to talk to. Then you go back and forth between the two despite them being right beside each other about 3 or 4 times to complete the quest. Some of the worst busy work I've seen in a long time.

Deaths Door: Stuck on the last boss and no matter what I do I cant complete. Hate when that happens...

Edit, being trying it all evening and still no luck. Even watched youtube tips. Just uninstalled in a rage.

I looked forward to lost ark for so long ,enjoyed it for a week or so when released but the gambling of materials to upgrade gear is a joke when you get to high tiers and turned me right off.

Im playing Hell Let Loose as always also enjoying Destiny 2 again, the new expansion is by far the best they have ever made and the endgame is pretty solid too.

I had the exact same experience, all the way to the final boss, got absolutely nowhere near killing him, and just stopped. I enjoyed my time with the game but it's a bit of a sour note to end on.

Just started Days Gone, decent game overall but I can see how its going to get repetitive. Was going to playthrough RDR2 again but started this instead. I really dont replay games again once ive finished them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,682 ✭✭✭Glebee

Been playing Days Gone for about a week now and am actually really impressed. Great game and well worth a playthrough. Its defo scratching that RDR2 itch I had.

Elden Ring pretty much exclusively. 60 hours in or so, and heading towards the last third of the game. Utterly brilliant for anyone on the fence.

Fancy a Stellaris run through soon as well, and a new DLC is out soon. Might wait a few weeks for the staple mods to be updated though.

Would like to give Sifu another go as well.

Going to go back to play some Ovewrwatch now that 2 is in Beta release, I understood it was a complete new game with more PvE elements than the first game... Is it just a rehash of Overwatch 1 with a few new characters and extra maps? Anyway always like Overwatch, everything was very polished I thought.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Went back to it a few days ago after about two years away, still a very fun game but match wait time for dps is pretty long.

I done the whole watch streams for overwatch 2 beta codes yesterday and got my drop but its not active on my battlenet yet.

SOme people saying it takes a few hours but i claimed mine at about 11pm yesterday so thats quite a few hours now.

On a big strategy game buzz at the moment. Played a couple of games of Civ VI, now am about to complete my first game of EU4, and going to try CK3 after that which I put about 15 hours into on release but will be giving it another go now to try properly get into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,682 ✭✭✭Glebee

Finished up with Days Gone and really enjoyed it. Great game and well worth a playthrough. Started Salt & Santurary and it's made me realise how much I hate Dark Souls / Metrovania type games. Rage quit and uninstalled.

Finally Finished Elden Ring last night, after playing it pretty much exclusively since launch, I'm looking forward to rotating between some FPS,

namely, Tarkov, Hunt Showdown, PUBG and Insurgency.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

I chickened out of Elden Ring, of the other games your planning to play they are all very good but id Hell let Loose in there , imo its the best fps out there right now.

Im playing V Rising at the moment and is fantastic, newly released on EA but probably the most polished early access game ive played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭Stone Deaf 4evr

I'm keen to try hell let loose but I reckon it might be better experienced as a team. Who knows, if I'm feeling froggy, I may just jump in on it.

As for the other FPS I mentioned, I should have clarified that I'm going back to playing them, after taking a break for ER. They've all had a slew of updates while I was away so plenty fresh content to pick over

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

@Stone Deaf 4evr re: Elden Ring im constantly tempted to pick it up but i wimped out of all the others in the series hence my hesitation but i love well crafted open worlds to explore and enemies to kill with a good feeling of progression just not a the frustration level of the souls games.

re: Hell Let Loose the majority of players on the big clan servers know what they are doing so your always playing as a team more specifically part of a big team but operating withing your squad, its really is a phenomenal experience once you get over the initial learning curve [maybe i should practice what im preaching when it comes to Elden Ring and the souls games :P]

@Glebee re: Days Gone is great, its one i will definitely return to as i was about 15 hours in but got side tracked by something else at the time.

While i never played any of the red dead games RDR2 popped into my head while playing Days Gone as something i should buy [ weird i know as its not as if there are zombies in both] :P

Gave V Rising a go. Got convinced by a friend. I didn't like the look of it at first at all but its growing on me. Similarities with Valheim.

Bit of a old game but managed to finally getting around to beating Warhammer 40k Space Marine.

Got the game years ago, had played two hours according to steam but between a session last night and tonight got it finished for a total of 9.2 hrs.

Really enjoyed it,ive recently started to read the 40k books as well so the atmosphere and world building was extra appreciated.

Was looking forward to the sequel anyway but even more so now.

Recently got back into Path of Exile and really enjoying it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

I've been playing FTL and Outer Wilds in parallel. I don't think I'm particularly good at FTL yet but I'm getting further with each run - it's fun! I'm still in the very early part of Outer Wilds where I don't have really have any major idea of what to do; I just have a ton of sporadic bits of minor clues to go off. As the thread of the mystery hasn't really become clear yet it can be demotivating to keep playing, especially when you keep missing jumps under the surface of Brittle Hollow and have to keep doing the loop over again.

I also played Sunless Skies for a wee bit, I really like the setting and the story. The combat gameplay is relatively simple which is maybe why it hasn't held my attention as much as the others above but alongside the others I'm impressed at what small indie games can do with a high quality level of writing.

Would absolutely love to play Elden Ring but its yet another game to add to the list of things I will play once I get an actual decent machine.

Would you like some vague non-spoilerish tips for Outer Wilds? Just things to get you on track?

Played through Borderlands 3 since it was free on Epic a while ago and never did get to play it when it released. Really enjoyable, now onto Trek to Yomi.

    Outriders

Been playing it on and off when I've had game pass, managed to go from lvl 17 to 29 yesterday (covid has me shut in so....)in one session. Got matched with a random who had the same idea and we plowed through the whole campaign and managed to finish it.

The lack of more abilities was starting to make it feel a tad stale at the end though.

Gonna hit level 30 and dip toe in end game and see what it's like.

Not a bad game, not a great game either but I do enjoy shooters and the abilities are decent, just need more of them.

I've also started the MCC on gamepass but finding Halo 1 a bit tough, bit like the remastered Mass Effect 1, there good remasters in a sense but the gameplay is just so outdated at this point they can feel a bit of a slog

Still sinking my teeth into "Monster Hunter Rise" and the "Sunbreak" expansion. Both MH:World and MH:Rise have each squeezed over a thousand hours out of me -- which is funny, because when MHW was recommended to me in a thread from years ago (shortly after its release), I recall seeing trailers and thinking... "Eh, not for me".

    Great games.

If you like blending arcade fighting-game style with Dark Souls'esque combat (re. dodge rolling, i-frames, block/parry, weapons and armor with their own skills, etc), then it's worth checking out if you're not familiar with them, especially if you enjoy a bit of grinding from time to time.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

I spent a silly amount of time in MHW and its expansion but i passed on MH rise so far which is a surprise to me but talk of endgame not being of the MHW standard put me off, not sure how accurate that is or not at this stage and since sunbreak release?

Ive been playing Outriders expansion Worldslayer for my loot grind fix.

Other than that Hell let Loose as always :)

Im planning to get into way of the hunter this week after its release today, i enjoyed call of the wild but its a very arcadey experience compared to way of the hunter which has gone the sim route so it should be is right up my street.

No i dont like hunting irl but its a game and its a lot of fun with insane graphics and huge world to get stuck into.

Went back to see could I finish Death Stranding. Still cant make up mind if it's just completely bonkers or an absolute masterpiece.. about half way through but I'm going to stick it out to the end this time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 63 ✭✭knobtasticus

This is exactly what I was going to ask. Now that it's hit GamePass for PC I was going to give it a whirl. Is it really just a pretty walking simulator or is it worth my time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,682 ✭✭✭Glebee

Im really between minds on Death Stranding, looks lovely but the story line is just mental. First game in a long time that I just cant tell if its style over substance. Ive put a good few hours in and its definitely worth a spin if you have gamepass. If it does not click after a few hours its probably not for you.

To be fair, Rise was initially designed for the Switch, so it was destined to be at least somewhat smaller than World. Having said that, I have 860+ hours in Rise (and 1065+ in World) - and Rise has only just started adding its post-expansion event cycle, whereas World is 100% complete and finished. I have every single thing ticked in World, and by the time I do the same for Rise (which will be fed content for the foreseeable future), Rise might actually squeeze more hours out of me in the end.

Is the end-game as involved compared to World? Yes and No. World has Guiding Lands, whereas Rise presently has the A1 Mutations. You can dig into randomly generated missions involving the mutated monsters, earning currency to avail of the gear-upgrade customizations, so the grind is there, but it's not quite the same as influencing a regional map.

It all depends on your definition of 'end-game'. Either way, it was an extremely worthwhile purchase.

Aside from a slight graphical quality dip between World and Rise - to me, Rise is just an alternative version of World. Plenty of differences, but I enjoy them both in exactly the same way - and they will eat tonnes of hours if you let them.

As someone who almost exclusively plays HBG and LBG, I had a lot of fun learning some melee weapons before Sunbreak hit. Just, er, try to stomach the excessive memes.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

I never really clicked with the melee weapons at all, i have always disliked button combo gameplay in pretty much any game ive played.

I can only imagine the hours i would have spent if i did enjoy melee :P

The Gunlance however i did enjoy , maybe it was the slower combo pacing for an ould lad like myself.

Cool video :) what was that tune @ around the 2:30 mark? BF2 maybe?

Same... any mods in particular? My only issue with it is how much time it consumes !

All the Vanilla Expanded ones anyway, along with Empire (though i think this is disabled on my current run), Rimwar, GiddyUp and about 40 more.

I have found a few others i'd like to try, like Combat Expanded, Rimworld of Magic etc... and will try them on later runs.

Interesting. I played it at launch. Only got to level 50 or so. Enjoyed it up till then but dropped it. What's changed?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Literally everything has been absolutely transformed.

    Some big ones :

Cost of fast travel massively massively cheaper now, lots more fast travel points plus azoth drops everywhere.

No more keys to run Dungeons/Expeditions run as often as you like, its so so much better.

Endgame is pretty nice now too with the new Gypsum and expertise/gearscore system.

I quit 4-5 weeks after launch and never went back until 2 weeks ago.

There is a massive free update coming next month currently in PTR called Brimstone, whole new continent amongst so much more too, its practically an expansion.

There are even fresh start servers coming online because they whole leveling epxerience has changed dramatically.

Some vids to learn a bit more.

The Lazy Peon made a good vid the other day ,very good watch.

These vids sum up whats changed.

    AC:Valhalla.

Really loving this at the moment. Have about 70 hours ploughed in and have not completed main story line yet. Have not touched any DLC either. Loving the game world that they have created here, has a very Witchery feel to it in some areas imo. Going to stick with this for the next while and get through main story and DLC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,031 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

    Ace Combat 7.

I got out of consoles a long time ago so I never played 6, or Zero, etc. and AFAIK 7 is the first one to land on PC.

I probably waited too long. I thought the game looked too good to run on my old rig but frankly it's pretty well optimized, unreal engine stuff.

It's kind of amazing how Project Aces pretty much just 'nailed' the source code for the game itself way back in the first or 2nd game, all they seemingly do between iterations is make new maps and higher resolution models, and new missions and narratives expand on their fictional universe with Osea, Erusea, Belka and Yuktobania, etc., and different ways to skill up or unlock new things. The actual mechanics of the game world itself, aside from adding new planes and weapons, hasn't really changed much of a damn in decades, the HUD is the *exact same* a lot of the voice cast is the exact same too lol. But I gotta say it's just damn fun to play. The fiance has taken the controller off me a few times to crash and burn. I'm also happy with some of the callbacks I was seeing to previous games - eg. attacking a base with a Mass Driver I once had to defend in AC5, the Stonehenge superweapon from AC4, etc.

Done with AC:Valhalla, once more a completely sh1te ending after I enjoyed most of the game. Why do all all AC games such poor endings apart from Black Flag which was epic.
