You think we'd have 248000 extra deaths without lockdown?

    No.

Anyone else fuming? I just watched the lunchtime news and I wish I hadn't.

Can't believe the Govt is seriously considering economic self-mutilation to Dublin's hospitality industry.... This is gonna be an expensive mistake of delaying the inevitable for our shambles of a health service.

I hope Paschal has enough cash tucked away in the welfare budget to handle another spike in long term unemployment. At least the poor sods in the aviation sector won't be alone in dole queues for long....

Try to avoid RTE news as much as possible, it's not good for mental health, it's only good for enraging, terrorising and upsetting people.

I don't think they can let it run free

Not that the virus can't be lived with, it's just we will run out of hospital beds

Hospilsation and ICU need has tripled in the last few weeks with a small bump in cases

It's a mild virus but if we get to 1000 cases a day and only 2% need hospilsation and 0.5% need ICU, that's 20 people a day in hospital and 4 in ICU every day, we will run out of space fast.

If we had a functioning health service let it run free for sure, survival rate is 99.5%+

Hire clowns, get a circus, that's who we elected
I think it has already run free, but regardless, I dislike that people still claim that there is a linear relationship between cases and admissions. That for every 1000 cases there will be 4 in ICU, it just ignores that we pretty much now know the profile of those actually vulnerable to the virus.

Anyway, to my original point. 99.5% survival rate you say? As I said, I have little doubt that global society will eventually realise that they can live with that, it just going to take some more time before it becomes palatable.

When doomers take their blinkers off they will realise that 650,000 annual deaths worldwide are a common estimate from respiratory illness WELL before we ever heard of covid 19. Where was their past outrage / lockdown fevers / clapping etc.

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/business/economy/arid-40044437.html

Our GDP is heavily influenced by exports, and not always the export of manufactured goods that would contribute to employment in Ireland. Export of digital services and asset transfers (as seen in the 25% GDP growth in 2016) are significant contributors to our GDP.

SMEs employ the majority of the workforce in our country, therefore personal consumption is a more realistic measure of real world economic activity and potential employment impacts. Personal consumption fell by 19.6% in Q2, similar to the UK where it fell by 23%.

" The figures show the personal consumption of goods and services, a key measure of domestic economic activity, decreased by 19.6% in the second quarter. This was partly offset by an increase of €37.8 billion in net Exports of Goods and Services. "

    The silence before the storm?

They have started their final meeting now. Its common sense vs the wishes of controlling the virus by mad virologists and Gerry Killeens.

    This could go either way.

Both are correct. There was a fall in Q2 because the whole country was in lockdown. The rest of the year the whole country is not in lockdown and so a lot of this will be recovered. And the missing expenditure restore if the virus is brought under control.

    Mmmmm. I wish.

As is the capital city might be in lockdown as early as 00.00 tonight. Davy will need to re do their forecast (but they are an optimistic bunch, probably go with -2% :pac:)

I think it has already run free,

I think it was running free in November, charting from professor Nolan assumes it got here the end of February and killed instantly. I'd say we had hundreds of thousands of cases (not necessarily sick people), that's how you got the large death rate so quickly, it was a slow build up they didn't notice, well they did notice but attributed it to the flu season extension.

    There's your build up..

No there isnt. NPHET said places that can do outdoor dinning can remain open.

Eat outdoors while you can as sunny weekend set to give way to colder week
Colder and more autumnal conditions expected across Ireland from Tuesday

You mean 947,000 after 9 months, nearly 10 months?

But that figure is actually inflated as in the period of 6 months that you mention UK recorded "covid deaths" as someone who has died after being confirmed as a positive case for covid. It actually did not matter at all why the individual passed away or when.

And thats just UK. Belgium recorded all of their deaths in nursing homes in periods March > June as covid (without doing any tests or anything like that).

The list goes on.. the cherry on top of the cake will be when Sweden report less deaths in 2020 than 2019. That will truly be revealing now wont it.

    "Doomers" - that's a good one :D

I'll add it to "anti-relaxers" and "flat curvers" (which, as you will note, bear similarities to "flat Earthers" and "anti-vaxxers"). Hmm...

Wet pubs in Dublin in lockdown for 7 months sounds temporary?

Yeah, the opposite of temporary is permanent.

Please stop spewing this absolute nonsense. Wet pubs in Dublin ARE NOT re opening on Monday. REGARDLESS of today's meeting.

Seriously, are you misinformed or you think because a small pub in Donegal re opens on Monday that all the pubs in Ireland "They are re opening again on Monday :)"

Perhaps, but all data from car sales to retail sales to restaurant visits are now at worst flat yoy; all corporates are confirming that business is good so while the govt may massage the economic data, western companies are confirming it is good there

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/coronavirus-nphet-recommends-ban-on-indoor-dining-in-dublin-1.4357279

Who is running the country?? The Government or NPHET? The Government need to seriously reel in NPHET and their 'leaks' / multiple interviews to the press / multiple push notifications from media coming from NPHET - acting as if what they say goes. They are acting as if they are the ultimate authority, and the Government meeting today is just to rubber stamp this.
I did not vote for NPHET or a Covid only approach to everything in Ireland from here on out and I won't accept it. If Míchael Martin and FF are so weak they cannot make a collective decision focusing on the widespread detrimental effects of these upcoming restrictions, then general election is needed now. We cannot allow ourselves to be run into the ground by a bunch of well-paid doctors sitting on advisory boards, and the cohort of nutty professors that appear on all media platforms daily....
How can anyone justify the HSE doctor's (Dr Martin Feeley) sacking just because he expressed a different opinion when we seem to be run with a Covid only focus 6 months later...

"Effectively you are telling our industry to close down as of midnight tonight if Cabinet sign off on this," he stated.

He said up to 50,000 jobs in Dublin could be affected if the restriction is introduced.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2020/0918/1165966-ibec-on-dublin-restrictions/

Jobs affected by potential decision tonight. No mortgage breaks for these people btw. No 350 euros per week either. This isnt March and we arent clapping for HSE.

Just hospitality btw. Other sectors are also affected.....

I wouldn't be surprised at all if John and Edward's twitter account was actually ran by their manager or some PR person. It works as people are talking about them for the first time in many years.

You'd imagine a management company would have a better grasp of spelling and grammar.
